Testing the .380 ACP in a 95 gr JHP and the .38 Special+P in a 125 gr SJHP in a 10% Clear Ballistics gel test. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...
I've reloaded 380 for probably 35-40 years and it's still not easy to get a hollow point to expand reliability and function reliability. most do one or the outher. papa wishing you well 😊😊
Yeah only Hydrashok Deep & XTP if they function otherwise Ball which can deflect off bone and ride ribs but I guess a lot of Euro agencies in 70s Ballistics tested ball and tends to tumble in the 6-9" range.
Doing good deeds for Good People in Central & South America & especially Brazil (where magtech is made & Civilians have to use under 9mm again from NWO). If I was anywhere there a 3" primary .38 and a 2" Backup might see a good person though. Also regarding .380 recoil bid difference from Modern ones w Browning Tilting Barrel actions & most classic ones & tiny ones with Direct Blowback people should realize. I've shot the new Bodyguard 2.0 twice now too small for me two handed but one handed it works well like most ww1 & ww2 Pocket .32s
I agree the 380 auto and the 38Spl look similar on paper and are completely different in real world use. Magtech 380 sucks! I will always say that unless they improve it someday! Nice Job GS
I think Magtech's ammo is hit and miss on performance . It really depends on caliber. I have Never seen Magtech 380 ACP do well. Its just not loaded hot enough imho. 900 FPS is Never good for hollowpoint expansion except in certain calibers that are known to go slow like 45ACP etc. Their 38 Spl seemed to do OK tho. Pretty much what I have always noticed. Nice test/comparison Gun Sam. I recently got a 4.25"barreled 380 and I doubt even that would help this anemic 380 Magtech ammo. Nice shooting as always GS!
GS. Good video and interesting comparison. I was not much of a .38 Spl fan but the more I see in your videos I'm starting to change my thinking a bit. Thanks for sharing and take care.
I wish manufacturers would stop wasting their time, R&D, and manufacturing resources to make .380 JHP that are tested out of stupid long barrels. Just go with the Lehigh-type of self-defense loads if you're going to pay a premium.
Interesting. I have owned and carried 32 ACP, 380, 38 Special, 9mm, 44 Special, and 45 ACP. Now I carry 38 Special. I think it has good knock down power with good control for a second shot.
Hmmm..off topic guys. Lets bring up .32 ACP. I remember reading or heard that European 32 ACP are loaded hotter than American .32 ACP. I also recall watching an old video by another youtube fella. He said that European .32 ACP "rim" is made differently to reduce "rim lock". He showed both American made and European made .32 ACP AND the European .32 ACP does have a different rim shape.
@@SCH292 My experience with European cartridges for U.S. calibers (.38 special, 38 Super) is that they set their equipment using metric tools to the closest equivalent to an imperial measurement. I don't think their variances are an intentional "improvement"; I think it's their closest approximation without complete retooling.
I posed a legitimate question about capacity vs efficiency using commonly used firearms community idioms. YT deleted the question. I’ve posed a similar comment on the other site where we chat. I am becoming very disenchanted with YT as a reliable venue for this type of content. I am impressed that you still manage to produce videos that YT does not immediately censor.
Would depend on barrel length and firearm weight for which one I might choose, but without knowing those facts i'd probably choose the HST because of the sealed primer and bullets, they tend to stay reliable for years of on body carry.
They will have a tad more downrange accuracy, plus they do more damage. In some sense there's no point to a hollow point if it does not expand, but at the same time it's better than having nothing but FMJ.
Good test, Sam! I'm sure there's a lot of people out that are forced by economics into using the cheaper lines of ammo, something I'm well aware of having been there and done that! I will say that anytime a 38 +P doesn't spank a .380, there's something seriously wrong! Personally I consider the .380 to the absolute bottom of the list when it comes to self defense, and then only when using the best ammo available! While standard pressure .38 might be a little closer to .380, it's still usually better. Personally, when it comes to .380 the only ammo I will carry for serious work is the Lehigh Extreme Defender bullet. I get an average of 1200 fps from the dinky barrel of my AMT Backup, which I think is phenomenal. Even my favorite bullet, the Speer Gold Dot is not reliable out of the short barreled AMT. I know a lot of guys use FMJ in their .380 for the reason you stated, which means they certainly should be using the Underwoid or Lehigh loading of the XD bullet because it "might" work better than an FMJ (it will!). FMJ performance is of course fairly useless in the real world. I use the same Underwood ammo in .38, although I no longer carry revolvers. My wife on the other hand likes the little Colt Cobra, which unfortunately is restricted to using standard pressure .38 ammo. Like the .380, it's getting 1200 fps out of it's 1.5 or so inch barrel. Cheers, jc
I love any and all your tests, but 380 is the most pertinent to me. Thank you for including it in your lineups.
Thank you another really good job in your comparison! I love my snubbies. 32,38,327 oh ya 22lr

Decent 38. Not impressed with 380.

Best tester on TH-cam, Thanks Sam!
Have a good weekend Sam and all of my aficionados

Oh ok 20 seconds into vid ……any drama here folks lol. Thx for the vid bro but not a fair fight😊

Surprising result for the 38, especially for "bargain" ammo.
Are there any 380 that would do the job? Fmj, jhp or lehigh solid bullet
I love your videos. So informative even for the layman
👍
I was quite surprised by those penetrstion results
Another great comparison/demo👍
I refuse to believe that .380 haters are real people.
Thanks for testing👍🍻
great video Sam

Aren't European 380 loads hotter than American standards?
I have tested a lot of .380 ACP from all over the place, and I don't recall any foreign ammo being more powerful than domestic.

I have actually never had a strike or censored video before.
Nice test!
Love the look and balance of a 3" revolver. Have Ruger SP 101 and Taurus 731 in 32 Mag. And a vintage Smith Model 31 32 S&W Long. All 3".
686 bro all day
Interesting comparison.
Also interesting info about non-expanding HP not penetrating much as FMJ
I enjoy the 75 yd test , it is fun
Hey Sam would you recommend in .357 Magnum 154 HST or 125 Buffalo Bore for self-defense? I can’t decide.

Still holding out for liberty civil defense 9mm tested in the taurus 905 🤞
I bought some, but I bought the Overwatch version. I was going to test in the 905, but I can't resist so I need to test it in my 5" pistol.
👍😊

@@GunSam Any truth to the notion that RN FMJ is more prone to “graze” hits?
@@GunSam good points, but I'd still like to see them expand

Well I will take either depending on where I’m going to which I want
Good way to segway into the weekend, appreciate the video.
Great test. Thanks for the video
