The most tragic thing about that is that he’s probably the only person crazy enough to predict the moves of the Greens. I know Alicent should have disposed of the moon tea pot earlier, but notice how Larys wasn't announced by Alicent's staff? We see constantly that the protocol is for the visitor to be announced and the noble within is supposed to give leave to enter before a visitor enters their chambers. But Alicent's staff just let Larys was in unchallenged. Because he replaced all her staff. He's already reaping the benefits of that decision. Had he been announced, Alicent would have hidden the pot of moon tea.
I actually think that Alicent dismisses all her servants often because she no longer trusts anyone, we get that scene of her in the bath after being reassured by Larys that the staff is 'safe' where she sends all her attendants away. AND that is before blood and cheese. She is also pulling the rocks out of the fire herself. No one announces Larys because Alicent is secluding herself, we know that the greens are woefully naive about the danger that both the queen and queen dowager are in and they are both allowed to go about their every day lives without proper protection. I fully believe that since Crispen Cornholio is gone, no one is standing guard at her door, so no one announces him and no one is paying any attention at all to her. Except Larys. Because he's seen her ability to gather influence from a position of relative obscurity before.

It’s a lot more likely to take out Vhagar or severely injure her when you’re willing to die in the fight. This is what I think Rhaenys recognized and was willing to make this sacrifice to end the war. Accepting her likely death would give her a major advantage because she could just have Maelys go ham and claw the mess out of Vhagar without thinking about her own wellbeing or making it out alive. When you don’t have the need to survive the fight, you can do a lot more damage. I genuinely think she thought she could take Vhagar down this way. When you do care about surviving the fight, your attack options are a lot more limited. I think Rhaenys knew that and knew she would be the only one capable of this. Brave woman.
It might also be a way of controlling/communicating with Meleys to go full cowabunga mode on Vhagar. Kinda like how a good dog handler will act calm when panicking inside lol.
I think it's also worth noting that there was no guarantee they would ever be able to drag Vhagar out of King's Landing again, where the most powerful dragon in the world would also have the support of Dreamfyre and all the siege weaponry of the capital city of Westeros.
its brave but tactically very stupid, and Rhaenys is a smart tactical woman. The way you beat Vhagar is numbers, you get like 3 dragonriders and Vhagar is suddenly not looking as scary. 1v1 Rhaenys has a hope in a prayer, but ally with 2 other dragonriders and now the odds are in your favor. She had burned the army and likely taken out the king, a big victory. You head back, you have scored a massive win and have thwarted Aemon's ambush. Fighting was the wrong call. Sure maybe Vhagar stays at King's Landing....great, you take over the countryside and let them stew in their one city. If the enemy's largest offensive weapon is stuck on defense you are winning.
@@travisdunlap4526 There's also no guarantee Rhaenys gets out alive whether she fights or not, though. Meleys is younger and more agile than Vhagar, but Vhagar is much stronger, and probably has a higher top speed than Meleys. In a sprint, Meleys probably wins, but flying all the back to Dragonstone... it's not obvious that she'd actually make it back alive. So, given the uncertainty of survival, it's arguably a better move to turn around and fight back, to surprise your enemy and fight while you're at your full strength, not exhausted after a long flight and a battle. Even if it's not a kill-shot, a severe enough wound could incapacitate, or potentially even cripple, the Greens' greatest asset, which could matter a lot in a subsequent battle. It's not a great plan, or a good situation, but it's better than dying for nothing.
Fun fact in the distant future a descendant of the wise emperor Cole will enact a safety test in a nuclear reactor in an eastern city to surprising effects
I was gonna say it wasn't really his fault that Aegon turned up unannounced, but then again Criston should have told his King the plan. But then again again, Aegon might have decided to spontaneously join the fight anyway, so...
I'm not sure how popular this opinion is but I like the analysis video coming out just before the next episode does. I think lots of people interpreting the Damon dreams wrong, especially him killing young Rhaenyra - he just wanted an end to her words, what she was saying was hurting him too much - it is not some exposure of his inner desire to behead her.
I agree. Daemon is grappling with the guilt of attacking Rheanerya last season and undermining her. He can't it stand when his vision of her brings up all his inner insecurities, similarly to how the real Rheanerya dismissed him from Dragonstone, and so does what he always does when feeling insecure: attacks. He immediately seems shocked at what he's done (hurt her) and even remorseful. The idea that he could kill his wife/queen/niece disturbs him.
ngl, when you said "So Meleys and Sunfyre spit fire at each other", the image that popped into my head was both dragons in a rap battle and drop bars so hot it became the recipe for wildfire.
I had to pause the video and give myself time after the line “He drunk drives his dragon to rooks rest to prove he isn’t useless”. The belly laugh that came out of me was something that hasn’t happened for awhile. Thanks alt
Rhaenys in the books also has the famous baratheon fury. One of the reasons why Addam and Alyn were revealed to the blacks after her death and not before
People keep saying that at the end of the episode that Aemond looks like he's about to end Aegon's life, but I disagree entirely. To me it just looks like he's walking up to Aegon more just to assess the damage done. You can see his sword is out but as he's walking he getting ready to sheath it before Criston even says anything.
This insinuates that dragon commands are not innate to their being and must be taught. The Targaryen dragonriders are just pretentious, like those who teach their dogs commands in German cuz it "sounds cooler"
@@Ironcorgi2 not to mention it's a lot more difficult for the dog to misconstrue phrases as commands. No and Go for example. Saying Ok in conversation not directed at the dog commanded to stay.
I don't think Aemond was trying to finish off Aegon at the end. You can see him sheathing his sword even before Criston came to the rescue. I think Aemond wanted to prolong Aegon's suffering more than becoming king at that moment.
Dæmon refusing to eat peas but jumping at the opportunity to drink suspicious stew which possibly includes the intestants of a maester is the most edgy ahh shit a guy like him would totally do
The moon tea wasn't requested 'in case' she became pregnant, it is because she already is pregnant. Note slower moments, heated stones to relieve pain and holding stomach.
I knew what the stones were for (after for a split second thinking they were potatoes ROFL). Anyone who's had to deal with the monthly "Bloodening" (or miscar or induced abor -- bc bleeding/cramping either way) knows. I was delighted and pointed at the tv, "Ooh! It's like my hot water bottle!" It's such a fact of life. I love that HotD includes details like this. Anyway, I've wondered if Plan-T ever fails..
In every young boys life, there comes a time where you pack your bags after an argument with your wife and you fly your dragon to a haunted castle to drink ayahuasca with a goth girl.
These summaries make me appreciate and enjoy the show even more. It really shows how much thought, talent and passion has went into the production and also the fantastic depth to RR Martins world. Love it!
I know you have said on the live Q&As that you would like to release these explained videos earlier in the week but I honestly like the timing of their release. That way the points and contexts that you highlight are very fresh in memory when I watch the next show episode which allows me to pay attention to facets I might have easily missed otherwise!
Daemon is incapable of love in the conventional sense; he's a textbook sociopath and groomer, he only cares about 'love' when there is conditions placed upon it. It is telling that he hallucinates Rhaenyra as a child, both of his inclinations and his guilt. I do not think he is self-aware enough to redeem himself, however.
@@nicholascoob1350 I'd like to deny that but you may be right. Still, the conditions most normal people have for their love is reasonable, and not unhealthy. I think that's still valid.
@@nicholascoob1350Definitely not. Plenty of abusive parents, especially ones we see in this show, only ‘love’ their children until they do something they don’t want.

He was already angling his sword towards his scabbard. It's clear he wasn't going to "finish the job" for us viewers Cole doesn't know this. He saw Aemond from a distance where it wouldn't be clear... Right after Aemond tried to roast Aegon. I think the character ambiguity is important for the story and characters, but I don't know how all these channels are misinterpreting a very deliberate and specific action like sheathing a sword
Criston: Aemond, can you do a number crunch? Aemond: Give me a sec… I’m coming up on 32.33 repeating chance of survival Criston: Alright, that’s a lot better than we usually do Aegon: AEEEEEEEEGON TARGARRRRRRRRYEN Criston: Oh my god he went in

I just feel bad for the dragons, they're like big giant dogs especially when Sunfyre playfully pokes at Aegon. I don't care about the humans as much, this is a human's war but seeing dead dragons broke my heart 😢
The timing of these is great. Not only do they offer a deep dive into the episodes themselves, but they also serve as a reminder of what happened in the previous episode -- just before the next one is released. Cheers for doing these!
Dude … You are the best !!!! I love your questions , the “ footnotes “ , various elaborations from outside sources , meticulous organization and articulate voice over . It’s so obvious that you emerged from the world of academia . Thank you for offering the viewers such fine work .
@13:34 "It's not his fault that he was born." Exactly; thank you Rhaenys! And that's exactly why many fans DESPISE Catelyn; she had every right to be mad at Ned for (as far as she knew) cheating on her, but ZERO right to take it out on Jon
I actually quite like how the explained videos come out just before a new episode! It's a good refresher of the previous episode for those who are not obsessively watching HOTD every day... But I mean I still watch it even if at this point I can recite lines of dialogue at the top of my head lol
37:40: If you look closely, it seems like Aemond is grabbing his scabbard with the other hand as he approaches, and the way he moves the sword is exactly as if to sheath it; in fact, after he turns to Cole he simply continues that exact motion. I don't think he was planning to kill Aegon here at all.
Huzzah!!! Just finished the nebula video you did with Glidus about this episode, and now I see this! What excitement. Thanks for all the hard work that goes into such interesting and well made videos!
2:04 *strangled. Seriously, I know it’a extremely common for people to say “choked” for “strangled,” but conflating them minimizes strangulation by associating it with something accidental that can happen when eating.
similar to how people confuse the word "electrocution" with minor shock injuries when the the medical definition of electrocution is "death by electricity"
Except when someone says, "Daemon choked Rhaenyra," the sentence structure indicates that it was intentional. No one thinks that someone can accidentally "choke" another person. Whereas "Rhaenyra choked on... " suggests that it was accidental based on, again, sentence structure and context clues. I'm not against pedantry in certain circumstances but you're creating a problem that doesn't exist.
Jace's facial expressions also reminded me of Harry Lloyd's Viserys in GOT Season 1, and whether intentional or not I think it's a great seeing his character develop even as subtly as that.
I really like this analysis of each episode as it if were a thesis reasearch. And I hope one day you do this kind of in depth analysis about the worlds of Half Life or even Fallout!
I just noticed by rewatching everything from this season, where Daemon is at that moment when he wakes from dreams. He's either always on the Weirwood chair(the one with seemingly Garth the Green imagery) OR he's in the Weirwood bed. The only good dream Daemon has is the one where he comforts Viserys as his brother grieves Aemma. He's in a normal chair. That dream seems to be the only uninfluence by the Weirwood because the hue of the scene is different.
The curse of Harrenhal and the mention of how it still holds magical properties stronger than most areas makes me believe that Qyburn found his true skills there, and he was forefited from wearing maester chains due to using said magic instead of practical science.
As well as the reasons you set out here for the title it also makes me think of the GOT scene when the wannabe king is killed by molten gold. Like a crown.

This is what Daemon realises when he fights Vhagar with Caraxes later
It's not a great plan, or a good situation, but it's better than dying for nothing.
lol Daemon is like yolo when accepting drugs from strange women he meets in castles.
Peas? Hell no. Secret paste from a witch after I just followed a ghost of myself in an eyepatch? Hell ya.

Criston did so well protecting Aegon this episode that I feel like he deserves another promotion! All hail Criston Cole, Emperor of Yi Ti!!
Fun fact in the distant future a descendant of the wise emperor Cole will enact a safety test in a nuclear reactor in an eastern city to surprising effects
He was not a good protector. He was too close to Aemond.
I was gonna say it wasn't really his fault that Aegon turned up unannounced, but then again Criston should have told his King the plan. But then again again, Aegon might have decided to spontaneously join the fight anyway, so...
Needed a Glidus cameo explaining that Tully family tree.
Shifty does it again. 10/10 analysis every week.
I'm not sure how popular this opinion is but I like the analysis video coming out just before the next episode does. It gives me a week to process the episode and maybe rewatch it and then I can watch your analysis and have the themes and plots refreshed in my mind just before watching the next episode.
Thanks for all your hard work!
Ramin Djawadi's music throughout all of the scenes concerning the battle, is some of the best and most epic stuff from the entire GoT tv show! WoW!
I can't wait for the soundtrack to come out!
It's so nice of you to put the characters photo and name so we don't get confused with all the similar names thank you :D
Using the footage of Eve saying “fuck me sideways” for the no spoilers section was hilarious…imma blame Glidus.
We've also seen bats at Harrenhal. They are the sigils of both the Whents and Lothstons, who are also extinct in the main books after having owned Harrenhal
Oh, as an Alaskan, I feel a duty to point out that when birds like eagles are locked in a so-called ‘death spiral,’ they’re actually participating in a courtship display. 😅
The age old question: are we fighting or are we fucking?
@@MistyWarden Applies to cats also. My little kid (to outside sounds): "I hear cats fighting outside." Me: "Actually, they could be mating. The sounds are the same." lol
GRRM: "Hm, this character is represented by a dark goat, what should I call him? Darko Goat? ...hm"
Rhaenys comment about being "off to battle again" can easily be explained by her recently patrolling for the blockade.
The way Aemond was holding the sword makes it very clear he was sheathing not attacking
Why did he have it out to begin with? Who was he planning to fight with his back to the chaos? Why did he sheath only when Cole walks up to him? Sus.
@@projectxs107he was searching a battlefield for his brother, there could be random enemies still roaming around
Seeing that you’ve uploaded a video brings the same excitement as when I see HBO has dropped a new episode of HOTD
ngl, when you said "So Meleys and Sunfyre spit fire at each other", the image that popped into my head was both dragons in a rap battle and drop bars so hot it became the recipe for wildfire.
Sounds like a job for MC Radio Rental
Criston failed so bad in this episode, that he'll probably become king next episode. Failing upwards.
HotD: making "watercooler talk" in workspaces a thing again
I had to pause the video and give myself time after the line “He drunk drives his dragon to rooks rest to prove he isn’t useless”. The belly laugh that came out of me was something that hasn’t happened for awhile. Thanks alt
Rhaenys in the books also has the famous baratheon fury. One of the reasons why Addam and Alyn were revealed to the blacks after her death and not before
“Martin… staring at the ceiling” bro I started laughing I did not notice that at first lol
Aegon was too lazy to study High Valyrian and was speaking to Sunfyre in English and Sunfyre actually understood lmaooo what a chad
This insinuates that dragon commands are not innate to their being and must be taught. The Targaryen dragonriders are just pretentious, like those who teach their dogs commands in German cuz it "sounds cooler"
It’s a way to remove the ability for your enemy from using them. It’s kind of how K-9 units often use German phrases for their dogs.
@@Ironcorgi2 not to mention it's a lot more difficult for the dog to misconstrue phrases as commands. No and Go for example. Saying Ok in conversation not directed at the dog commanded to stay.
@@Ironcorgi2 That is a good plan - because what are the odds someone German would ever be the bad guy?
@@Ironcorgi2til that i, a native speaker in german, have a secret power against k-9 units
37:33 bit of a moment I feel people are overlooking. Aemond is already putting his sword away before Criston says anything at all
I don't think Aemond was trying to finish off Aegon at the end. You can see him sheathing his sword even before Criston came to the rescue. I think Aemond wanted to prolong Aegon's suffering more than becoming king at that moment.
I'm amazed you didn't mention that Matt Smith playing "Aemond" was copying Aemond's pursed lips
Matt Smith's impression of Ewan Mitchell _was_ right on point. I bet that was a hilarious day on set.
Daemon having a mid-life crisis at the worst possible time.
I do not think he is self-aware enough to redeem himself, however.
οκ Freud.
All love is conditional unless between parent and child
@@nicholascoob1350 I'd like to deny that but you may be right. Still, the conditions most normal people have for their love is reasonable, and not unhealthy. I think that's still valid.
@@nicholascoob1350Definitely not. Plenty of abusive parents, especially ones we see in this show, only ‘love’ their children until they do something they don’t want.
@@jakespacepiratee3740 Did I say all parents love their children? Nice straw man dingleberry
Maybe it’s because Steve Touissant is incapable of aging, but you could have told me Coryls and Alyn went to school together and I’dve believed you
Abubakar Salim also exudes those ageless vibes. He brought this "late thirties" energy despite not even being 30 years old in Raised by Wolves.
Sunfyre was beautiful, it's pup noises of pain really tore my heart. (all things considered)
The gods have yet to make an Alt shift X video that lacks absolute stunning analysis, your grace.

I actually had to satisfy my thirst for waiting for this video by watching and rewatching the 3hr Q&A video posted last weekend. I’m very addicted to this channel and I don’t care.
PS: Eve Best Actress of Rhaenys absolutely delivered on the role. Shed a tear when she died in the most epic battle since Battle of the Bastards. I totally enjoyed the 4th episode. My personal favorite so far!
Halfway through this I had to do a double take and remind myself how fortunate we are to have watched Alt Shift X along with every GoT episode and now years later are doing the same with HoTD episodes
I suddenly realised that Alys Rivers looks a lot like an older brunette version of Ginny Weasley.
Yeah, and she looks like a female version of Cillian Murphy also lol
She also played a wolf woman in glow.... COINCIDENCE??
@@KingSlayer_.THANK YOUUUU, I know she seemed familiar
Tully is also a Sesame Street Muppet. He's often forgotten.
Close. The Muppet’s name is « Telly », short for television. He’s a purple monster first designed & written to teach kids not to sit too close to the tv. Though clearly this is a crossover of lore & fandom😂😂😂
@@ruthbennett7563 Ahh, yes, Telly. Thanks for the reminder. I remember him being nervous all the time, lol.
He was already angling his sword towards his scabbard. It's clear he wasn't going to "finish the job" for us viewers
Cole doesn't know this. He saw Aemond from a distance where it wouldn't be clear... Right after Aemond tried to roast Aegon. I think the character ambiguity is important for the story and characters, but I don't know how all these channels are misinterpreting a very deliberate and specific action like sheathing a sword
I await your videos as much as the episodes. S2 videos have been fantastic. You single handedly bring old GoT fans to HotD.
I haven't even watched any HOTD episodes this season, I'm just here for Alt Shift's deeply soothing tones

Apocalyptic sex
Shifty, since you started doing this (as far as I can remember), you’ve posted these breakdowns the Sunday afterwards. I love it.
Everyone else pumps theirs out on Monday, and yet you don’t. And your breakdowns are better than everyone else’s.
Keep up the amazing high quality work. I love your channel. Thanks for everything!
I just feel bad for the dragons, they're like big giant dogs especially when Sunfyre playfully pokes at Aegon. I don't care about the humans as much, this is a human's war but seeing dead dragons broke my heart 😢
Lmao
Me too- it was hard to watch. We don't even know if they're smart enough to understand why everyone's fighting :/
The timing of these is great. Not only do they offer a deep dive into the episodes themselves, but they also serve as a reminder of what happened in the previous episode -- just before the next one is released. Cheers for doing these!
I can’t wait for Daemon and Caraxes to humble Aemond and Vhagar.
He enjoyed watching the king in terrible pain. Why would he end it.
Well he tried to kill him 5 seconds earlier so it really doesn't matter
Huzzah!!! Just finished the nebula video you did with Glidus about this episode, and now I see this! What excitement. Thanks for all the hard work that goes into such interesting and well made videos!
Aemond probably thought, "What would Daemon-senpai do in this situation?"
That segue into your, I mean your rival’s podcast was brilliant.

I'm not against pedantry in certain circumstances but you're creating a problem that doesn't exist.
ahhhh!!!! it's only 4am where i live but i guess i'm awake for the day now. i love these recaps so much. thank you!!
I actually love that the videos come out on sunday. Please keep doing this!
Oddly enough I find the death of Sunfyre the saddest. She was so beautiful. She didn’t deserve to die as Aegons toy.
The curse of Harrenhal and the mention of how it still holds magical properties stronger than most areas makes me believe that Qyburn found his true skills there, and he was forefited from wearing maester chains due to using said magic instead of practical science.
bro these explained episodes are amazing. connecting the dots so perfectly

The BEST HotD and GOT analysis on YT. Thank you.
Rhaenyra saying she'll go to Rooks Rest is like Logan volunteering to go down for the Cruise scandal. It was never going to happen lol
As well as the reasons you set out here for the title it also makes me think of the GOT scene when the wannabe king is killed by molten gold. Like a crown.
