Thank you very much for sharing this tip in a direct, quick and simple video. Unlike other guys that spend 10 minutes just with the useless chit chat in their videos.
Recently I had a model build where I wanted to paint the chrome pieces. So, I thought there had to be an easier way. I tried Rust-Oleum 2x ultra cover flat gray primer. It really worked well completely adhered to the chrome parts and the finish top coat looked great. It sprays on thin, and it doesn't obscure any detail. and it took minutes to dry with a hair dryer. It worked so well I started using it as a primer for all the parts. The price per volume cost is very cheap. Always work cheaper and smarter and buy more models. And by the way, I do love all your videos Thanks.
Great tip. I myself, use Castrol super clean. This is an automotive parts cleaner and can be purchased at any store that sells automotive parts/ supplies. It also is great for stripping paint.
I like Super Clean (formerly Castrol Super Clean), as it strips the chrome and the clear glossy paint underneath, leaving you with completely bare plastic. It is also a great paint stripper; some guys call this 'the purple pond'. It's great when the fumes from oven cleaner might be a problem in your house.
Hello Scale modeller, Love your work , great stuff , I felt this one was a little misleading though, here in Aus I wouldn't use oven cleaner, man that stuff is just caustic !! Regular bleach the cheaper the better is the stuff I use takes 2-3 minutes turn the items in old glass bowl with short bamboo skewers and wash off with warm water, job done, I don't think I would leave items in the bleach for 24-48hrs however.
Ha! I love the credits' content. Nice to know info. Bit of Trivia: in the 50s, Coke had the reputation of stripping automotive paint, but not as fast as TV shows of the day would have you believe. (Saw. it on an "77 Sunset Strip" episode)
after using near boiling water and oven cleaner together I would highly suggest using cold water with it. I used it to clean the aluminum heads on my LSX for my hot rod. Outside it was great and water hose hooked to hot water tank made them look like they were out of the box new. Until temp dropped to single digits on head #2. Thought my shop sink would do just as good with a hose in it. Worked as good or better, but the steam I inhaled turned out had caustic soda and who knows what all else in it. Blistered my throat lungs and everything in between. Had pretty good ventilation so I thought in a 1400 square foot garage. Stupid mistake and it could have really hurt me. So anyone using this stuff just be extremely careful and its an amazing product to clean about anything. Makes real aluminum heads shine like fresh castings for sure
I use bleach gel. works in less than 5-10 minutes and it's all clean. also doesn't smell bad. quick and easy ready to paint or do what ever you want. I think it's Clorox from walmart. cheap stuff. good vid. thanks!
When I was just thinking damn I don't have Mr Muscle cleaner, open the cupboard low and behold! Wifey has it all covered. haha And it worked well! cheers.
Couldnt find bleach so i tried the Great Value "Bathroom Cleaner with bleach" and it knocked the plating off in about a minute, so might be worth trying
Great video. Question: Does it remove the yellowish gooey stuff that sometimes remains in the corners and crevices of pieces? I have had a problem with that on certain chrome pieces using Purple Power, brake fluid, bleach and Awesome Orange...
Colonel Reb's Scale Models That is what happens when you don't clean it after 10 minutes, i spray the oven cleaner on let is soak for 10 minutes and then wash it off with water and a tooth brush straight after.
I accidentally bought a chrome plated Tamiya Mitsubishi zero fighter. I used oven cleaner to remove the chrome, which it did, but it also leaves a thin film on the parts which ruins the small parts that are hard to clean.
I am building the Tamiya MIG-15, which is also painted a metal aluminum color that I would like to remove. I am wondering if this method would work to remove the paint.
What do you do when you have a part that comes chromed in the kit and the model calls for part of it to stay chromed and the rest is painted? Do you strip it all and then reapply chrome to the specific areas?
OK so I've got some chrome tanks I want to paint but leave the tank straps chrome.... I will be painting the pieces flat black, should I just scuff up the chrome I want to paint?
I've used Coca Cola and it strips the chrome off the parts cleanly, with no brushing necessary. I'm going to try this with another cola company though, since I'm sick of that company and their dirty politics.

Well, that reads “oven reiniger”. Must be the real good stuff. Voor schoonmaken en zo. Vind ik zelf altijd zonde om aan mijn oven te verspillen.

How do you remove the shiny primer that is left on the parts after using the oven cleaner.?

Colonel Reb's Scale Models The goop will be gone if you take it out after 10 minutes and wash it with water and a brush.
I'm goin with purple power but I appreciate this as well. Thank you!
worked like a charm. ty
Also Castrol Super Clean will strip chrome about as fast. Also Purple Power will work but slower. But I agree, nothing faster than oven cleaner.

+Steve Henkel either that. Or just paint it on with a brush
The Scalemodeling Channel how can I re chrome things. I'm building a model that has far to many casting lines in chrome pieces
Hello. Besteht trick ever.....Many greetings from Germany Peter
Domestos works as well. It needs just a few secs.

OK so I've got some chrome tanks I want to paint but leave the tank straps chrome.... I will be painting the pieces flat black, should I just scuff up the chrome I want to paint?
+Matt Wilson yes
You must have bad bleach...the bleach I use takes about 20 seconds to maybe 3-5 minutes depending. I have used it for years. Always works great.
I just pour coca cola in it.. Until the next morning and it is off.lol
I've used Coca Cola and it strips the chrome off the parts cleanly, with no brushing necessary. I'm going to try this with another cola company though, since I'm sick of that company and their dirty politics.
That's where I got the stripping from.. Is from you Greg lol. Thanks!
