** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:

    austinwhiskyvau...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Rex's genius on this channel? I get the sense that he's the one responsible for the overwhelming majority of the shenanigans on this channel, the story-arcs/narratives, and the genuinely hillarious suspense that he has us all in right now.
This is a whiskey review channel at its heart, and Daniel is a really personable wealth of knowledge on that front. But lest we forget how much of the charm of this channel owes its origins to the obviously Rexian shenanigans.
    * raises glass *
    To the Mooch!

I'm with you TCL. Rex is the answer to many questions asked about the Whisky Vault.
      I love the guy.
I assume the comments that are anti-Rex are actually anti-mooch because that character can get on ya after a while.

Just found your channel a couple weeks ago and have been playing catch up every day after work. (roughly 80 videos) I'm rather new to whiskey. The depth of my experience was Jameson and Jack in college. Last week I picked up a bottle of Jameson and for the first time was able to sip and pick out notes and flavors (rather than shoot it and just taste like whiskey). Today I coincidentally picked up a bottle of Jameson Stout after watching one of your older reviews on it and to see if I could pick out the differences.. WOW, so much vanilla and creme as you guys mentioned. Looking forward to expanding my palate with you guys! My grocery store just happens to carry Laphroaig 10 at a decent price. Excited to give it a try in the not so distant future. Also looking forward to Daniel week!

Hey Daniel, I have heard you say in the past that you get a metallic note in the caskmates stout version of Jameson. I have been intrigued for a while to try it, and finally bought a bottle a couple of weeks ago. I think I smell the note you are talking about, but could not attribute it to a metallic smell. Instead, I think that in some way that smell and taste is being driven by the hops from the stout cask. It takes on a more "floral hoppy" note to me. Just wondering if you get that the next time you try it or if anyone else picks up on that in this whiskey. I will bet your version will have the same type of note. I really think it is absorbing hops from the stout barrel.

Daniel and Rex, I just recently discovered your channel and I have been binge watching it ever since. I work as a bartender and, just recently, started at a liquor store and have found that your videos have drastically expanded my knowledge of whiskey and have greatly helped my recommendations to all my customers/bar guests. I am looking to start a collection and all I have now is Buffalo Trace and Monkey Shoulder. Could you recommend a challenging single barrel bourbon as well as a more challenging unpeated scotch? I look forward to all your upcoming videos and a big thanks for your great content so far, I've been recommending your channel to as many people as possible!

Perhaps the underlying theme is actually the power of the mooch showing itself in how many whiskeys Daniel pulls down in self-importance... Thereby raising the the mooch to entirely new levels of power.

Agree about Irish as the inroads. While I used to shoot WT101 in college, when I really started drinking whiskey, it was Jameson and Tullamore Dew. Then I migrated to Scotch via Soeysides and Highlands, then to bourbons.

    Hey guys!
I had a question about Islay whiskies. I just recently bought Laphroaig 10 as my intro into peated whiskies, since it was cheap enough that if I didn't like it, I wouldn't hate myself later, and am happy to report that I absolutely love it. I was wondering where the salt note comes from though? Does it simply have to do with the location of the distillery being right on the coast?

Yes Rex is starting to really concern me. Speaking of Jameson, I just left the Wild Turkey distillery and had a long talk with Jimmy Russell. He told me that their old whiskey barrels are sent to Jameson and to Glenlivet. What’s so crazy is my go to scotch, Irish and American whiskey all started out in the same barrels.

Y’all should review Proper twelve by Conor McGregor. I will say this on a personal note, it is a young whiskey. Minimum of 3 years...no doubt about it. It is grainy and woody but the more you drink it the more you taste the vanilla and honey. In my opinion, it is damn good for a young whiskey. But personally I do think it can complete with Jameson. But that is just me.

Not gonna play the outro backwards to figure out what Rex is saying. Did that with my Beatles White Album and released some serious bad juju, next thing I knew I was listening to Barry Manilow and drinking Crown Royal. Too risky!

Not a bad episode for Daniel week. But the omens foretell of a great cataclysm of whiskey. Glencairns will crack, corks will pop, and the somms shall weep... It is coming...

Has anyone tried Jameson's IPA Caskmate? What were your thoughts? notes? overall experience?

I myself have eyeballing that one. I like the other 2 cask mates brands but I never been an IPA guy. So am curious to try myself. Looking forward to other replies.

Ahh me auld da loved a jemmie and red after a few pints of Guinness, Jemmie and red in Ireland is just Jameson mixed with red lemonade, it was popular with the older generation, why don't you lads try Brendan Behans favourite tiple, champagne and cherry, Behan was diabetic and not surprisingly he died prematurely.
