I know I never heard of Sorcerer Hunters until maybe last year or two years ago. I don't remember if it was because I was randomly checking out Discotek's releases on Rightstuf, or if I was going down a retro anime rabbit hole just following TH-cam recommendations off of other retro anime, or if I was watching the trailers on the special features for another series I already owned, but that's literally the _only way_ I discovered this series. If this aired on Sci-Fi Channel's Saturday Anime or got some primo shelf space at SunCoast Video back in the '90s, I must've missed it. I knew as soon as I started looking into it and saw the Slayers/Ruin Explorers-esque art and comedic, fantasy adventure tone that I would dig it so I picked up the complete series, and I'm pretty glad I did! It may be uneven, but this definitely deserves to be better remembered by '90s anime fans... or remembered, at all, I guess. I don't know why this is so obscure (you joke about the window for "Sorcerer Hunters Brotherhood" long being closed, but hey, Orphen got a recent revival so who knows what studios are thinking at any time nowadays?), but I gotta admit, it feels pretty cool to unearth something like this when you _do_ find out about it. Here's hoping a few people come here to Kyoto Video and learn about it - and all the other series you cover - for the first time too :D
Watching this review and hearing the song used in the end credits brings back A LOT of memories. I had pretty much forgotten about this series until watching this. Now, despite all its flaws, I want to go back and watch it.
So in the early 2000s my friend was obsessed with this series, anime and manga both, and I remember her talking about both endings. I actually liked the anime ending focusing on the nakama aspect because at the time I felt like the manga went "and so it was a love story" but I'd have to watch the anime in full and re-read the manga to judge it again.
This makes me remember soul eater a little to much. A popular series based on popular trends of the time and an anime ending destroyed by a lack of source material.
@@delete---7593 we are talking about how the ending was handled in the anime vs the manga. In soul eater the anime ends on Maka punch! Because they got ahead of the manga right a the end. They ended the show 2 or 3 volumes shy of the manga material and came up with an “ending”. As Kaiser said the real ending wasn’t much to write home about either but it made more sense thematically to the story.
Discovering this video years too late. Sorcerer Hunters was (and still is) my favorite manga of all time. I discovered it when I was around 14 years old, and I had a very deep love for Carrot (so much so that my internet handle still involves his name to this day...not this handle, but the one I use elsewhere). You really hit the nail on the head with this video. The anime did have very good moments, very good voices, and THE BEST MUSIC, but it falls laughably short to how amazing the manga was. It's such a shame because there was just so much more packed into the manga than the anime had time for. It's a series I really wish would get a remake where they follow the manga more closely, like what they did with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It deserved so much better than it got...It also completely pissed me off that all of Carrot's flirting was for naughty because in the anime he never learned his lesson and evolved as a character. By the end of the manga, he falls in love with Tira, and she realizes she's in love with him as well. She had always had a knack for being able to see who he truly was underneath his perverted exterior, and I loved that. I wished it had been included in the anime...
Sorcerer Hunters is my childhood. I still have the original ADV DVD collection from my father. Though that nurse episode no idea it was that altered to literally to basically be fanfiction.
As a 90s kid I literally remember renting Sorcerer Hunters from blockbuster! And then just never seeing or hearing about it ever again. Like quite a few anime’s from that time. Feels like a fever Dream. I’m very glad I came across this video. It unlocked a core memory of my exposure to anime as a kid! 90s anime will always be supreme, even the bad ones.
If Sorcerer Hunters was made today, Carrot would be the typical nice guy generic protagonist who needs to unlock his literal god-tier powers to save the day with every girl wanting him (including Dota, Big Mama, and some female villains). The only interesting idea here is Tira and Chocolate would probably start out seeing him as a slave boy they'd bully/dominate before coming to genuinely care for him.
I own all the manga for this series. It was one of the only complete series that I knew when I bought them at the book off in Japan. 20 years ago omg. 😳

Great video. Always thought it was hilarious that the main villain for this series was named Sacher Torte which literally translates to "chocolate cake". Sorcerer Hunters names are weird. Also, was great to see the Martian Successor Nadesico mention and I'm hoping you'll do a video on that, eventually. It's one of my absolute favorites and the English voice cast for it was so damn lively that it sounded like they were all fed pure sugar before being shoved into the recording booth.

This was my favorite series back in the day. I still love it. But agree with most of this. The anime is dumb fun, but the manga was GOOD. The storyline was funny but more cohesive, emotional, and well-rounded. Millefuille was my favorite character and I’m still not over how horribly they did with him in the anime…even his *voice* was terrible. The OVA did WAY better at staying true to the manga.
Seems like Sorcerer Hunters would have been better off being a 6 episode OVA series like Golden Boy was. When you try to make an Anime aimed for the Widest Broadcast Audience, you limit yourself to the lowest common denominator of Cesorship. There is a REASON why Naga the Serpent worked so well in the Slayers OVA and Movies.
I have the entire manga series and you're probably right. 3/4 of it is standalone funny stories. The only time it breaches out is when Zaha gets involved.

Even though sorcerer hunters does fall flat in alot of ways one thing i do love about the series is the OST (especially) the op. You can't go from episode after episode of the same handful of sex jokes to demanding we care about stakes & plot. I don't know if my friends stuck with it to the end, but I dipped. (Strangely, they were more into this than Slayers, and thanks to that, it's still a void I need to fill in my viewing.) Along with all the gay jokes about Gateau (every single one was "Haha, he's a dude who's into other dudes, isn't the mere concept of that hilarious?"), it hasn't aged well. At least the OP remains an absolute banger.
I think the rest of the party would want to keep Carrot in demon beast mode because it would be easier than dealing with constant horn dog shenanigans. The one picture you showed of Lord Potato Chip looks like Trump.
i bought into this series for its cheesecake fanservice. I knew what I was about when I bought that first dvd. Gradually I collected all of the series including the ova over a few years, so I don't think I had time to burn out on it as badly. I don't think I ever sat down and binged the series either so it never really sank in just how off it could be.
Carrot was annoying and useless. I loved the songs, Megumi Hayashibara as always, because she's amazing. and I was obsessed with Chocolate and Tira's looks and action scenes 😍 But I agree with what was said in the video. It's not a long lived anime

Some even show some great potential but are ruined by that juxtaposition going too hard to enable the sleezy pervert trope. I guess it CAN work with characters like Master Roshi who's emotional intellegence is feared more to his pupils and opponents but is clueless to general behavior around women. It doesn't conflict so bad and can be properly transitioned as ge shifts mindsets. For some reason however, most of these cases are supposed to romanticize these asshats as deep and sensitive toward women. Which doesn't make sense. It feels like fanfic from an incel. One of the most agregious examples to me is Sanji from one piece. I LOVE his backstory with Regleg. It even seems to set him up to be more like Roshi where he is lecherous as a character flaw but can also snap out if it to be understanding of the unifying plight of starvation on the sea. Then they minimize this aspect and build up more that he is a genuinely deep guy toward the individual situations of women while further amping up his perversion. You can't pull off making a character a respecfullijg understanding romantic AND someone who sees every girl as just a flavor of the minute piece of meat to drool over by cranking both to 11. It's too conflicting and only makes them extremly unlikable. Add in he us a HUGE transphobe and nothing about him being a decent human with emotional intellence is believable.
Arslan got a remake a few years ago, and it stood out against Lodoss War's story. Whereas I didn't care for serious high fantasy it stood out. Genshiken was huge and I remember NewType covers showcasing it, but now? I doubt anyone at all would even recognize the title. Paradise Kiss, I just bought the 20th anniversary edition of the manga, and it was FANTASTIC. The anime's "veridian collection" is up for resale at $284 on amazon as of writing this with no real belief that it'll get reprint. :( If you want another relatively unknown 80's/90's title that is highly artistic, got a hell of a story, and is unknown AF, Spring and Chaos is worth a watch.
Too bad the story doesn't work, but that won't stop me having some fun with this show. Like yelling at the screen "what? Did you seriously!" And laughing xD i mean they have food names like Dragonball xD
My favorite fantasy sword and sorcery anime is record lodoss wars and its sequel. For me the slayers and this series just went way too silly for my tastes. To be more fair for the Slayer series the first season was fine heavy on the action and very light on the comedy but starting in season 2 The comedy just devoured the action and that's when it lost me. Simply put I'm more of an action person and I really don't care for that much comedy.

If you want another relatively unknown 80's/90's title that is highly artistic, got a hell of a story, and is unknown AF, Spring and Chaos is worth a watch.

My favorite fantasy sword and sorcery anime is record lodoss wars and its sequel. For me the slayers and this series just went way too silly for my tastes. To be more fair for the Slayer series the first season was fine heavy on the action and very light on the comedy but starting in season 2 The comedy just devoured the action and that's when it lost me. Simply put I'm more of an action person and I really don't care for that much comedy.
