In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. In 1910 Savarkar was sent to Kala Pani, the Andaman Cellular Jail on account of treason. Savarkar was studying law in Britain and wrote the book The Indian War of Independence about the Indian Rebellion of 1857 was banned by the British colonial authorities. Savarkar was arrested and ordered to be extradited to India for his connections with the revolutionary group India House. In Jail Savarkar wrote several mercy petition which became contentious after it was alleged that he ask for forgiveness from British on Gandhi’s Suggestion. In May 1921, the Savarkar brothers were moved to a jail in Ratnagiri. he wrote his "Essentials of Hindutva" that formulated his theory of Hindutva. Later he became the president of Hindu Mahasabha and made several controversial statement about Nazi party in Germany and Muslims in India. you have made certain criteria to be a freedom fighter if someone doesn't fit in that he is a traitor. Congress and Nehru have made Bhagat Singh terrorist, Shubham Chandra Bose absconder. Anyone who doesn't follow the ideas of the congress party is not a freedom fighter. Even killers of the Mopala massacre are treated as freedom fighters but Savarkar doesn't.

Well you are right, but there are many other freedom fighter who fought for our country and got kaala Pani. I don't know any other freedom fighter who wrote mercy petitions from Jail and now hailed as "Veer". Also Savarkar political ideologies did him no favour by cooking fake stories around him. All this tainted his legacy.

I have visited Cellular Jail. Even today the Idea of being in those cells is living hell. Surving 10 yrs under those conditions is beyond imagination. Even one month of sentence can send shivers in the spine of normal human.
No other freedom fighter of that time could have responded in different ways or even survived the torture.
Imagine what must've happened to those braveheart freedom fighters who completed their life imprisonment sentence there till death.
There were 350 prisoners in the Cellular Jail. Only one man apologized to the Britishers. #SorryWorker

Veer Savarkar’s secretary Bal Savarkar had written on June 2, 1954: “Sri Rashbehari Bose was the president of the Hindu Mahasabha, Japan. While during the years 1938 to 1940 Savarkarji had been presiding over the All India Hindu Mahasabha Sri Rash Behari Bose too continued to preside over the Japan branch of the Hindu Mahasabha. After the release of Veer Savarkarji from his internment at Ratnagiri in 1937 Sri Bose wrote to him occasionally on the advisability of the Hindu Mahasabha movement and as the result of the correspondence between them Sri Bose started a branch of the Hindu Mahasabha in Japan under his own presidentship. The correspondence between them continued right up to the declaration of war by Japan and the formation by Sri Bose of the INA (Indian National Army) in Japan even before Netaji Subhas Babu could reach Singapore” .
