Glad all is well! i noticed youre hacking away very hard at those vines. so ure going to want to kill them, even the roots. if you use glyphosphate, it will kill them, but also everything it touches, so be careful. i like to use roundup glyphosphate on the poison ivy around my house. its been pretty effective:) but it can even kill trees, so be very careful when applying it. i think thats going to be what you guys have to do if you want permenant removal:) hope that helps! theres other stuff too, but i use the glyphosphate. not sure if the poison ivy will come back next yr, but its definitely dead this yr

I strongly disagree on using glyphosphate. It is banned in 7 EU countries (including Italy), though it is still used for some applications. Do the research, this stuff is not good.

bummer its banned in italy. everythings bad for the environment. i did do research, which is why i picked it, and it works awesome! in this particular case, i believe thats what makes it effective. nothing good for the environment kills plants, especially vines

I know what your doing is hard. But, when I see you get up, make coffee and gaze out at the little village and mountains, I’m sure you take a deep breath and think, “How lucky am I.” Keep on, it is all worth it. Be glad that you are so young and will be able to age well at this beautiful location.

It may be frustrating and painfully slow-going right now, but you're teaching your kids the valuable lesson that anything worth doing is worth doing well. This isn't a disposable flip-n-sell property -- this is the home you're making for you and your girls, meant to last for generations more. We've never met, but this mama in Seattle is cheering you all on. You've already done such amazing work, and thank you for sharing your adventure with the world. Can't wait to see what you do next!!

They are both beautiful girls, someone said Chloe looked more like Bradey and Alexa looks more like Heather in another video. They are really getting hands-on instruction so they won't be afraid to tackle various odd jobs when they're adults. There was once a study of girls who ended up in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) ...and most of them had dads who included them in fixing things around the house, or encouraged them to look under the hood of a car and not be afraid of working with and learning to fix tools and machines that are ordinarily encouraged by parents for their boys exclusively. That's pretty neat that they are getting so many different experiences. Bravo Bradey & Heather!!
Btw that study was explained to me by an aeronautics engineer who worked for McDonald Douglas & I was her Nanny between the time her two girls finished school and she (their mom) got home from work.

I admire what you are doing very much and your children are an absolute delight. As a teacher, I urge you to have Chloe see a speech therapist regarding her “r”s. It’s absolutely charming now, but won’t be when she’s older. It won’t correct itself. The lessons are easy and fun and lots of children need help with this. No big deal. She’s a jewel! Both your girls are! I hope, please, that you take this suggestion with the love it is made.

I think sometimes a parent doesn’t hear it. I remember a child correcting my daughter when she was young when she pronounced his sister’s name wrong. It turns out my daughter could not pronounce “TH” I had never heard it before that moment. I worked on the sound with her and she was able to correct herself. A friend of mine was insulted that a parent pointed out that her daughter could not say her “s”. The girl continued to lisp all her life. She is now an adult with a lisp.

Hi. Just a thought. I am a British woman living in rural India and building our house was a huge challenge. Not the same as yours but different challenges. Anyway we had granite cut for steps etc and whenever they cut stone here they run water over it because if the heat. They do it to reduce the chance of it cracking like yours did might be worth running a house with a small slow flow of water onto the stone when you cut it. Might also help keep your blade strong as well. Just a thought. Have a good day

An idea for your power needs: since you have a small stream up-hill from your place and a lot of stone, build a small pond install some water pipes and a home-sized hydroelectric turbine generator to augment your planned solar panels. Power when the sun doesn't shine. There are some great videos on the subject on YT. Keep up the great work. It's a pleasure seeing your progress.

Have your groceries delivered - I order everything from Walmart website, has a membership fee, only $30 min., delivery is free. I’ve been using them & Fry’s since Oct 2022. If you order about 8am, it will be delivered by 2pm- of course you have the option to select your preference . They deliver everything inside to my Kitchen. I was getting so tired walking through the store, checking out, loading/ unloading my car. No more lugging water, sodas…This is the best treatment I’ve given myself - give it a try- you’ll love it!!!

Amazing work being done! Please warn the girls (and Heather!), to tie their long, beautiful hair back when using tools, especially power drills. Years ago, a boyfrof mine was working at a friend's frame shop, and a piece of his long hair got caught in the hand drill, and quickly tightened up to his head, where it luckily stopped, RIGHT next to his skull! Since then, I cringe when anybody with long hair picks up a drill.😮😮😮 I was impressed with Alexa's recall of details about the toxicity of some berries. Chloe's love of gardening also bodes well. Your mention of that gardener telling you how some rarer items would grow well on your place made me think of the markets they have weekly in the towns in Italy. (?Possible future income stream?? Hmmmm...) 😊

If you go to a mechanic in the village, ask for any used brake fluid, when you get home, apply this to the vine damaging your walls. This will stop the vine from growing back.

I was on another channel where he shows people how to live in other countries, which are easiest, safest, cheap or not cheap, tax havens, etc- a miriad of countries. In the comments, people were stating their experiences living in diff countries. ITALY was labled very DIFFICULT, especially if you plan to rehab any dwelling- years of red tape. unwanted vines. have you considered vinegar? years ago I tried a recipe that was listed as "natural round up" and it had vinegar as the main ingredient. it did kill the weeds that I couldn't get rid of by pulling the roots and the next year the weeds came back but "baby weeds" are easier to get rid of than ones that look like bushes. I've heard of doing this with salt also but I wouldn't want to saturate my soil with salt anywhere that I might want to grow something eventually and I'm not sure that I'd want salt on a rock wall either.

I was so worried when I read of another flooding in Northern Italy, yesterday/today it was around Torino, glad your terraces are still okay despite those uncommon downpours.
What an enterprise to excavate and underpin another part of your future home, you're so patient! tomatoes aren't climbers, just tall and delicate plants, maybe up to 6 feet as in my greenhouse, so they just need lots of support, sticks and strings, but they wouldn't go around an arch or the likes.

Hi! Maybe heavy spraying 1 part strong (we have 30%) vinegar mixed with 5 parts of water with pressurized spreybottles or brushing with paintbrush. It takes a lot of vinegar in your big terraces. But I would really reccomend it at least in areas where this plant has been taken over the most. Vinegar burns plant and it's roots just like car fuel when you spill it on the ground without actually burning. Rain will zero your efforts so few sunny days are needed. On colder weather it works slower then hotter days. It needs to be sprayed carefully avoiding spillings on unwanted areas. Depending on different plants it works pretty fast. Grass and similar thinner and weaker plants dry completely on the same day and in good hot conditions even in hours but some thicker and more persistent plants take more time or more vinegar. I had some really persistent and poisonous plants on property and last year I went all in with strong vinegar only (that's when I found out about this vinegar stuff) and in this summer there wasn't anything growing at all still. Vinegar don't go into the groundwater or ruin it.

Collapsing stonewalls are common on our property. The reasons are unprofessional construction and/or the slowly moving ground over the years under the slope pressure rather than penetrating roots. On the contrary: fern, ivy, bushes and sprouting trunks sometimes keep the wall from falling apart.
If it's a wall with no vital function, I' d secure the "dangerous" stones and just leave the whole thing.
Otherwise you'll spend a huge amount of work or money. In my opinion, it's not worth it. Your property still looks beautiful and is ecologically valuable.

Another good idea for the garden is to weed it, before it becomes a mess like it is now.Teach your little girl that and see if she likes the garden so much, when she has to work and get dirty. That part is not so fun, but if you start in the beginning it makes it a lot easier. Grass is the worst thing to have in the garden. It's so hard to control. You have to get out the roots, which is tough too do. My Dad told me to do this and I tried to cheat and just pull the tops and cover it up to look nice. He would come along and dig down and see all the roots still there and he would look at me and say do a job right if your going to do it! I felt so stupid for trying to cheat. I never forgot that lesson all my life!

Oregon State University has a webpage entitled "Methods To Control Blackberry Thickets." I don't know if the advice given will apply to what grows on your property, but it's worth a try if you can't find any other info. The article states that blackberry patches are quite invasive and hard to control. They suggest growing a competing plant, such as grass and/or to frequently graze goats to eat it. However, the goats would have to be coaxed into eating the center of the patch. The only other method is to do what you are already doing: digging it out.

I was looking for you on Sunday! So glad to see that you are all well…I don’t envy you this incredibly difficult, physical labor, but it must be so rewarding to face each obstacle and find a way to make it work. It’s very impressive that you find the best solution to each challenge and don’t just take the easy way out. You are putting your hearts and souls into building a home you can be so proud of! Thanks for sharing your journey!

Sunday just wasn't right... didn't hear the hammering, chiseling, sawing, laughter,.clicking the fire to make coffee and the bells.

You are a great dad teaching your daughters and having them help. Research says that girls who have fathers that inspire and believe in them,, become the most independent and successful in life, in what ever they want to do.

Several thoughts about your vine problem.
Goats might love them (used in us for some invasive s). It would take a couple of seasons
Also, by lopping them down 3-4 times at their base, it will weaken them.
Covering them with plastic and vernalize them. (Cook them)
Neither method quick but it will certainly slow them down.

We have very stout wild blackberries in the Pacific Northwest, a constant battle. I've seen some success using cheap vinegar as you cut them. Good luck!

4:51 You could temporarily glue the visible stone bit(s) to the bottom of the staircase with a slurry type cement mixture (relatively low in sand) with and supporting it while it sets... The key is with this type of "glueing" is the speed the cement is allowed to cure, the slower you can get the cement to cure (let's say over the course of 2-3 days using plastic and wetted rags) the stronger the bond so you have a good chance of pouring a underpinning concrete colomb. Obviously the glued stone bits can not be very large. The piece you are holding here is about the max.
Alternatively you could try if great stuff is capable of holding up the stone pieces (maybe make smaller pieces for that faster process)

This was one of my favourite bits; watching Bradey do the under-pinnings on the staircase. Wow! That is SO MUCH WORK!! All that digging that you and Heather did (I feel for you!!) ... and then, the careful working out what needed to go in: Cement footings with bits of stone on top. BEAUTIFUL WORK! Well done! You can be proud of ALL the work you have both done (and the girls!). I am enjoying these so much! Thank you!
I love all the creative solutions you come up with.

Watching you work on the stairs this image came to me. Just an idea: couldn't you add a stone step to cover the space where you're adding concrete so you won't see where the poured concrete floor will meet the original stairs? Your energy is amazing Brady!

What a job you have undertaken. It is exciting to follow the process. Nice to hear that fruit growing is particularly suitable in the area. It takes a few years for a tree to grow, so just plant as soon as possible. Good luck 🙂👍

The tool is interesting. It's very like an English tool called a billhook (pronounced billock). Occasionally some English forms have a sharpened back edge forming a straight cutting edge. The form of axe crops up in many cultures which attests to its usefulness for work in vineyards or wherever you need to cut sapling sized growth, or the sort of job for which you were using it.

You could use your angle grinder to trim that edge of the stairs stone and a small chisel to make the edge seem old, or put a different stone in its place.

Idea. Make a few brass engraved plates to give people in 200 years information about who worked on parts of the home. As they would probably wonder about some of the things your family did. Like a time capsule.
