      EM I mean Silly Love songs was the ranked the best song of 1976 by Billboard. Mull of Kintyre was the best selling single in the UK on its release and is the 4th best to this day. The band had 6 number ones and 14 top tens in the US and 1 top ten in the UK with 12 top tens. They won 6 Grammies and have sold millions of record world wide. Plus they had the honour of doing a James Bond song. Wings were not as big as the Beatles but that doesn’t mean their weren’t massive

    • @davidsanderson5918
      @davidsanderson5918 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oliverfield877 Much of that might be true.....but I remember it well. Everyone might have had a copy of the Band On The Run LP and Silly Love Songs in the house but absolutely NO ONE would say Wings was one of their favourite bands. The whole draw of Wings, despite what anyone says about Denny or the brass section or how good Venus And Mars was or anything else, was that music was still being made by an ex-Beatle. Wings themselves weren't massive in people's reckoning of major musical acts. Nor were Abba....or David Cassidy....or Bay City Rollers ....or David Soul....or any others that dominated the charts and played massive gigs. Just didn't work like that.
      It's like saying Westlife are one of the biggest acts in history because they had about 10 consecutive No.1s or whatever it was. Or that Bananarama were on a par with The Supremes! What the history books say is not the same as what the people say.

I saved all the money I made hustling for money placing people's groceries in their car at the wagon corral of our big neighborhood supermarket. in any case, still doing shows at 58 with our band DUNGAREE DOGS NYC.

    I think it is a giant oversight that Wings isn’t inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. I understand that McCartney is in there twice already as a Beatle and solo, and I haven’t checked but Denny Laine might be in for the Moody Blues, but not as Wings. Fact is, if Wings had the kind of career they did and the members weren’t already known quantities, they would have already been inducted. Hell Band on the Run is a great enough album that it alone should have guaranteed a place. Time to get these guys in before they up and all die off.

      ralgarte Denny seemed to really love Linda as a friend. He said he was so proud of how far she came along & by 1975-76 she was doing well & added a lot to the band. He also said she took care of the band as well as her own family. I read somewhere that Linda didn't get along with Dennys wife. They avoided one another. I can't see him dissing Linda after the way he spoke of her as a friend, wife to Paul mother to the kids.

      Denny did a nasty series of articles about Paul and Linda for a tabloid. He made some extremely sexist comments about Linda. No chance of working with Paul again after that.

    • @GarrattFamily
      @GarrattFamily 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Clare Sherman Correct Clare - I read that series of articles at the time and it was pretty negative. He went on about all sorts of things about Paul moaning about this and that. I cannot remember all the details now, but it included stuff like the band sleeping in really poor accommodation on Paul's farm, how mean Paul was etc etc. What possessed Denny to write those articles at the time I do not know - maybe he and Paul had a big argument and Denny thought "screw you". After doing something like that, Denny lost all chances of ever working with Paul again: Paul must have felt that a huge betrayal of trust. Sad really, since together in Wings they achieved some great things.
      With the Tug of War and Pipes of Peace re-issues out now I am amazed how many sessions Denny was involved with - on so many of the photos from those sessions Denny is there in the background and on the tracks.I always saw those albums as Paul+George Martin+guests and I had forgotten how much Denny was actually involved in those sessions. But clearly something happened between them both during those sessions and that was that....

      Wings was never a band in the first place. It was McCartney and Laine, with whatever established musicians were available at any one time.
      I don't know whether McCartney lost his creativity with the Beatles bust-up, or whether his stream of inane commercial 'pop' simply underlines the notion that Lennon was the power behind The Beatles after all.

      @@bingola45 I find your comments here very interesting. Paul's creativity definitely deserted him when The Beatles broke up. He could not sustain the level he was on when in The Beatles. I don't understand the deeper dynamics but he definitely needed John Lennon to fulfill his potential. I question if Paul would have ever created his best Beatle songs were he not with John. In fact I don't think he would have. I don't think we would have Hey Jude, for example, were he not with John. John lifted Paul. Paul needed him. I agree with you the Band On The Run album is not anywhere near as good as some believe it to be. I think people can lose objectivity because of fondness for The Beatles. While it WAS a great show, of the 25 songs performed, only 6 were Beatle ones. Today, it's the exact opposite. Paul gives the audience a Beatles show with only a few of his solo works included.

    what's interesting to me is that for the most part, Paul's best post beatles work is the albums where Denny was involved- ram, BOTR, V&M, SofS etc. In a similar way, the Beatles best albums are the ones where George H was most involved and engaged- Rubber Soul, Revolver, Abbey Road. Meaning, both of these guys are underrated, and you cannot account for the subtle shifts in chemistry that a person can bring. Especially in music.

    It's mine as well. Joe English was the coolest Wings drummer

      I had Joe English' Dr set from Wings in my basement. A beautiful Gretsch set. They belonged to Steve Kent the drummer in Sea Level
      We had a band in Atlanta called Spank. Kick ass.

    Interesting,when he mentioned the McCartney drug bust in Japan "throwing a spanner in the works",I'd never actually heard that expression before(being American),so I was never aware all these years that the title for the Lennon book "A Spaniard in the Works" was obviously a play on words of that expression.Looking it up now I find out that a spanner is the British equivalent to what we would call a monkey wrench here.Learn something new all the time.

      I think Rod Stewart had a cd with that title. It was the first time I remember hearing the expression.
