  • Contributions was written over the years 1936-38 and is a collection of Heidegger's notes/thoughts about beyng. As such, it was not written systematically from start to finish and lacks the polish of a book written explicitly for publication. Nevertheless, it is the first 'big picture' overview of Heidegger's post-Being and Time thought and therefore indispensable reading for the student of Heidegger.
In this video, I introduce Contributions and briefly discuss some general ideas Heidegger raises; including systems, technology, Being and Time, de-cision, negation, and two ways of thinking.

Thanks Zeb! I'm reading Concluding Unscientific Postscript at the moment... and loving it! So many parallels between this and Heidegger - I never realised just how much Heidegger was inspired by Kierkegaard.

Hello, Absurd Being! Is it possible to understand Contributions to Philosophy without having studied Being and Time? Enjoying your videos!

Hi Richard. In theory, yes. Heidegger's post B&T writings do, strictly speaking, chart different territory, but B&T is a better introduction to Heidegger's way of thinking. Without some prior feel for Heidegger's philosophy, I think Contributions might be a tough read.

Start with Heidegger's work "History of the Concept of Time" -- it's a more accessible (and I think interesting) early 'version' of Being and Time.

Thanks for the definitions they were useful shortcuts as I went through the text. For me the ‘disposition of restraint’ seems key to what Heidegger is thinking as ereignis. Your point in the last session about humans being disposed towards the gods and the moods they impose helps to a degree. How restraint sets up a world for humans I suppose is what he thinks by earth. So I guess earth is a mood. It also occurred that transporting only seems another word for ecastasis. Anyway thanks again.

@@lastruebeliever Thanks. Good to hear you made it through unscathed.
I agree about restraint, which is necessary to understand the way beyng withdraws and conceals itself.
I didn't see earth as a mood, but I did see it as important for setting up a world (the two coming together in strife). Heidegger talks more about both of these terms (surprisingly quite lucidly) in _The Origin of the Work of Art,_ if you haven't already read this.
That's a good point about transporting being ecstasis, too. I think you're probably right about that.

Earth is recalcitrant, withdrawn, that’s the sense I had of it and the link I made with the disposition of restraint.

Absurd Being Had a look at OWA. Imo the temple founds the world of the gods and people, in its strife with the dispositional restraint of earth - the event of the truth of being for the Greeks revealed in the work of art. Thanks for the tip!
