I'm horrified...the Snare..is an 8 bit early electronic drum......whaaaaaaaa...and ....it mixes welll...mind....blown!!!
always loved that part, sounds so small and humble before he switches to his main snare to lift the song again, very creative drummer!

If I recall correctly, they did all sorts of mixing tricks to get the sounds - they put the mics out of phase on purpose, he literally had a PZM mic taped to his chest to pick up the sound of the drums from his vantage point, and more. That opening snare is likely the bottom snare mic with an extreme gate and eq setting.
My gosh those cymbals sound amazing.

Manu Katche used 13" new beat hats on Sting and Peter Gabriel recordings.
He still uses them today.
