Long time watcher. I seldom comment but I really want to express how I enjoy watching your videos. Seriously nothing brings me more joy than watching your vids. Your a real TH-cam gem! Cheers Dave ! Keep up the great work!
I had a couple old 20s & 30s radios with the big wood cabinets the size of steamer trunks that I wanted to clean up. Murphy's Oil Soap is the thing to use. Comes in a liquid concentrate and already mixed. Works great and doesn't hurt varnish or shellac. Smells good, too.
My first guitar was a 70s Mustang that we found at a flea market. It had black lacquer over that polyester dip coat. The lacquer was badly cracked and wiped off with acetone but the acetone didn’t affect the polyester at all. The sealer was so thick that you could see light between your finger and the wood that seemed to be about 2mm.
@@peterwelsh1932 btw: finished one project today - a partscaster out of scraps... ended planting the fake Strat neck in the yard (hope to breed Squier Minis) and the metal parts will be recycled metal. Basswood body I gave away,

(I’m thinking of ordering my bass player a purple maple tiger Chickenbacher bass/ 12string off AliExpresss just because we can’t afford a real one and they’re only like ? $300-$400 bucks? They look great after a few coats of nitro. Can’t even tell a repair was done. That being said, I don’t like the thought of scammers getting one over on an uneducated guitar buyer. It happens. weren't some of your video's from years back refinish films that you did behind a plastic screen using an airbrush? I ask because I was looking for them for tips on how to do mine on a 3 P-90 guitar headstock a few months back. I see now that I'm going to have to do more coats to make it nice, thick, and shiny like you mentioned. 23:01 Liked & shared 8-|
hahaha..."a poop stain in your shorts".."turd brown" those jems will keep me going all day...A real pro job Dave, well done fella...the most bizzarre clean up I have ever done was beef blood that had dripped onto a very expensive vinyl record, after going through all the usual suspects with solvents, soaps and water...I ended up eating it away with organic bio yoghurt.
Why O why did you say rock hard? My wife heard that and ordered a few bottles leaving me with very high anxiety and afraid to go to sleep! Thanks Dave!! Great job though. That looked tricky. **note to self** Always earphones!!
Question: When you get this type of work, where there is damage/tooling/aging from either prior owners/manufacturers/repairmen, do you ever need to ask the owner if they want to keep that look left from its history? I could imagine someone wanting that completely gone, or also leaving it there. Some of these vids over the years feel like art restoration, how/when do you/they decide what is left untouched?
"Alcohol is the winner" grabs the Ronsinol .... "Alcohol is the winner" grabs the Goo-Gone ..... "Alcohol's the winner" reminisces on Easy-Off Oven Fuckin Cleaner. Quit smokin pot bruh
Yeah, in this case especially, the logo don't matter. The paint being gone and all. As long as the correct logo replacement is used and application matches that of the original. Just like replacing the badges on a restro car, you don't want to, original is always best but as long as it's the right part and right fit and is not being passed off as something it isn't then it's ok.
I'm also putting on a Fender headstock decal that I am putting on. It looks like there was another decal on it bur somebody scraped it of. Looks like it once was a"uire" decal. Dawn dish soap and water clean that decal right up
Back in the 70's Fender used a different finish than they had in the 50's and 60's. An unfortunate side effect was that it reacted badly with the headstock decals, when it was applied over them. (sort of what you stated in the video) So they continued to use the new, durable poly finish on the rest of the guitar and used the old lacquer to the headstocks so they could apply a decal, then clear over it. I have a late 70's strat that has this same different aged finishes effect.
Joby, 409 is truly harsh stuff. My go-to cleaner for smoke residue is OxyClean crystals dissolved in warm water, with a little bit of dish soap added. I don't know how safe it is for an unpainted wood surface, but it's excellent for cleaning my deck planking and (stained) cedar siding. Most wood cleaners for decks and siding are just overpriced chlorine laundry bleach.
Dave, if you ever need to do this again, maybe consider using an Automotive "Caramel" wheel. Basically a rubber wheel that body shops use to remove decals on car bodies, it smells like Caramel!!
i learn on all these videos and thank you dave for the education. that said, on a 70s guitar, doesnt this refinish and redecal ruin the value? all these people that like originality this just seems it would kill it. course i know its a jazz base not a P bass
