Great work, especially from the point of view, bringing a refinished body in line to the look of the original neck. I'm not a big fan of "brand new pre aged instruments" - in this case, absolutely right thing. - Also, took a note about the Patina you used for an upcoming project on my side - thanks!
Lerne jedes Mal wieder was dazu.
I wish we lived closer I'd hire you to take care of my guitar. (Likely not ageing but setting it up.) It is heartwarming how much you care about all the details! Nice project, interesting video as usual! 🙂
I don't really like aging instruments, but somehow it makes way more sense on a refinished old one. Wether you like it or not, this is a good job talking about the craft itself. Looks authentic
Thanks a lot! Yeah I kinda like relics and kinda don’t. For example I like the process and the details of a nicely done aging. It’s not that easy actually. 😅 But if I have the option for myself, I’d rather get a super subtle aged guitar (pretty much only weather checking) as opposed to a heavy relic.
Those screw holes in the body for the thumb rest wouldn't be on that side of the strings if it were really a '69', that is a '74' at the oldest....I have a '71' with honest wear.
I am sorry to say to me it seems you missed the point here 🙂 actually it is quite the opposite - it's like to dress you granny to bikini or leopard legins instead of proper dress ala queen Elisabeth. And what Kris did makes perfect sense
I have a 1963 with the same problem. Just got it refretted, but the refinish is just too new.. Pretty relevant video for me👍 about the effect on pots, when you removed and put on the strings again the strings will loose alot of gunk and residue and then brighten quite up a bit. Im not saying that the new pots isnt better, but this is a factor thats also make an big impact on the sound.
What a coincidence. 😂 Just in case you never did something like this before don’t start with that sweet old bass. Practice on something less precious maybe.
Thanks for the demo of 50s wiring. I have owned a 73 P Bass since 1981. It's not that beat up and the chrome is not scratched. I think relic jobs like this are more about matching current tastes rather than simulating realistic aging of a well maintained musical instrument. Not all old Fenders get abused and or neglected.
You didn’t show it, but did you sand the pink before applying the amber tint, or was that unnecessary since the lacquer solvent in the tint would dissolve into the pink?
Actually I did. Very slightly though, more to clean the Surface of the body and to make it look even under the new clear coat. I went over it (wet) with a 3600 grit Micro-Mesh pad before spraying. Cheers
@@KrisBarocsi You were right, I swapped the stock pickup of my MIJ precision with a lollar pickup because she sounded dull and lifeless... with lollar it was way better but still the low end was muffled... Hey Kris. Gute Arbeit.
(Impulse response).
What a dream project! I'm really glad you did this video 😍 I bet I'll come back with detailed questions once I will get stuck with my project someday (probably in the middle of the night)
Really good work, it must be hard to not accidentally get carried away and overdo the wear. If it was my bass I would definitely go for a tort or mint green guard though. Moto and shell pink as a combo is just a little to ‘sweet’ for me, sounds amazing either way
I’m not sure how pure this ferric chloride is that I have but I don’t mix it with water or anything. But as told, chrome hardware is tricky and hard to get right. Nickel is much better for aging.
@@KrisBarocsiFreeze Off product I purchased turned into oil like WD40. If you would, could you send a link/image of the Ice Shock? Maybe it’s different in the U.S. Thank you!
Kris I admit I am not super worried about the look and finish (i have poly myself 😄 no dings like new after x years) BUT even more I have to admit this was super interesting to watch and amazingly executed! Yay..I need a job as a carpenter now..😄😄
I only sprayed once but I went over the Surface twice to create a thick enough layer. Since you sand off a lot of it afterwards you shouldn’t make that layer too thin.

Servus Stefan. Ganz ehrlich? Hmm. Lass uns reden. Vielleicht machen wir was. 😁
I don't like the idea of aging guitars. It's like making your 20 year old daughter into a 40 year woman and marrying her to a 55 year old man!!!

If there was any project deserving an aging process, it was this one.. very well done! As a starting guitar tech I learned a lot too. Thnx for that!
Thank you man! Glad to hear that you found useful stuff in there too. 👍
Oh my, this makes me want to cry.
That's what I think to myself every time someone "ruins" a beautiful instrument with this aging. Why??
you killed the bass
