    That was an epic ride. Bloody well done. I watch videos like yours when my confidence is waning for my planned ride to Capetown next year from the UK. It's not so much the ride that I get concerned about, it's all the paperwork. I have no experience with visas and border crossings in Africa. Plus the fact that I'll be 73 at the start of my trip. Still reasonably fit though. Need a light bike as I'm not great off road ( hope to improve on the way )Was thinking of an XT250, or CRF250/300
    Gonna watch a lot more of your videos now. Subscribed.

      Hello Geoff, thanks mate, much appreciate, would you believe I’m doing Capetown to Ireland at present! I’ve spent almost 3 months in SA, heading for Mozambique soon, I’ll be home in a year or so, add me on fb to see how I go?
      Crf250/300 would be ideal. Borders are a pain in the ass and the africa route is probably the trickiest. But lots of people do it, download the app iOverlander, research it, and borders, and get stuck infront of the laptop a few times a week researching borders and planning a route, make a word doc to keep track of it all.
      Best log luck, and make sure and go for it next year one way or another

    • @Jaffa1951
      @Jaffa1951 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IanHoran Thanks for the info. Got IOverlander, Maps Me and one or two others.
      I'm sure you know this already, but Sudan isn't safe at the moment. I know you're a long way from there and if you are planning to go there, hopefully it will have calmed down by the time you get there.
      I'm planning to go the 'West Coast Route'
      What bike are you riding nowadays? That DR650 you did the BAM on must be knackered by now. .
      Also, do you book your visas etc in advance, or get them as you go?

    • @IanHoran
      @IanHoran  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jaffa1951 yes, im only going as far as Tanzania, then looping across, ZAM,bot and Namibia before heading up the west coast,the poor old dr650 is split into many different bikes on 4 continents now😂😂😂 it let go in Patagonia and I called it a day there, but a good few travellers got much need parts from it, im on another dr650 now, just did a year in Oz and one more year to get home.
      Visa are a pain, Irish passport is decent, so I don’t need a lot, and to be honest I haven’t done a lot of research for what’s ahead of me, I know Nigera and Congo require them so I’ll go to embassy’s along the way, I came to SA on a months notice, I was busy planning south east Asia and home from Oz. But decided africa would be better. Also for me, im well experienced in chaotic borders, I know what’s required and the ins and outs, does t really phase me but in saying that. I DO NOT ENJOY THEM

    I did this trip in March 2018 in a 100 series Landcruiser, bridges don't look so good without the snow on them. It was -35C most days. didn't use railbridges we drove over the rivers and lakes . Rally Tours NZ are the people who run this tour

    Well done Ian. Me and three mates did the BAM in 2014 west to east - leaving UK, across Russia and northern Mongolia to Vladivostok. Back on the Trans-Siberian to Moscow and rode home. Did a trip 2008 Uk, eastern europe, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan with a German friend and back home solo through Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia and then across Turkey and europe. It brought back happy memories. Thanks and good luck with future trips.

      @@IanHoran We did the BAM on Honda 650 Dominators and foolishly, I did the Stan's tour on a BMW 1200 Adventure. I only chose it because of the 33ltr tank - I crossed the 400 mile Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan and couldn't find if fuel was available. The bike was far too heavy and tall. By the time you got your foot down, the bike was on it's side and a bitch to pick up fully loaded on your own. I would have loved to do South America but 70 next birthday so realistically getting a bit long in the tooth. Enjoy your trips. I'll follow them with interest. Paul

    Hi Ian, amazing ride mate and nice to see raw footage opposed to the glammed-up stuff. The glam is the ride here for sure. I'm already motivated to ride in Siberia and have been planning my route, but i am riding a CRF1000L Africa Twin, and wanted to do the BAM; now though, i'm not sure she's small enough for those bridges and railway bridge crossings! Still, gives me a taster of what's to come, i'm excited.

      Tim Chubb yes mate it would be a disaster! I had two days of non stop rain from ulan Ude to Tynda! It was horrible but the next day it was perfect weather pretty much for 6 weeks till I reached Ireland! Very luck, but BAM is tough on your feet, due to being wet all the time, so try change your socks regularly and lite a fire at night to dry your boots

      Ian Horan I went from London to the Black Sea Turkish border in 5 days and it was sun all the way, just chased a few thundershowers. Would have been an extra day if it rained the whole way.

      Spacious Loquacious I typically run an Tkc 80 on the front, love the Mitas E07 and motoz tractionator, also motoz gps. For this trip part of the leg I had a second hand tkc80 and a street legal knobbly. The knobbly got me out of trouble numerous times as I was solo and couldn’t rely on anyone to push me out if I got stuck!
