ACCA vs CPA: Which is Better?

ACCA and CPA are two of the most respected accounting qualifications on the world. They are popular in different regions and the path towards getting these designations are quite different. In this video, we discussed the main difference in terms of the global coverage and recognition in various countries, the application process, how the program is run, and how to fulfil the requirements.
We also touch upon the details of the exams themselves. For example, the exam format is vastly different between the two tests. For the US CPA exam, it is fully computerized, with half of the questions in the form of multiple choice questions, and another half in what is known as the task-based simulations. This is a bit closer to the case studies that may be familiar with ACCA exam candidates, but the format is very different, given the questions are designed to be graded by computers.

Hi there Stephanie. How's it going? I think that there might have to be made a slight correction in the slide under the ACCA heading. ACCA exams are now held 4 times in the year (March, June, September and December) rather than twice. Where I currently reside (Dubai), the exams are held 4 times in the year. Cheerz.. ✌️

From my experience as an FCCA I would say that it is rare to get through ACCA in less than 5 years. It is unusual to pass all exams first time, and that slows things up.
ACCA is much more difficult than CPA as students get in F5 and F8 papers and most of them are stuck with them.
Even if taking exams four times per year, for one subject, students need at least 2 or 3 months, so meaningless to have changed the two times a year basis to 4 times a year.

My friends were all average learners, they had around 80% when they graduated high school. Today they are ACCA's who cleared all their exams in their first try. You only have to believe in yourself and work towards it instead of losing hope and giving up. You can do it!

Which one is more prestigious for working in UAE both in case I go for job and in Practice. (As I am a Chartered Accountant and after considering exemptions number of exams are same for me in both courses)

Take CPA, then if you want to obtain ACCA designation, you only need to take five more exams.

Hello, not likely at this current time. You'd need to reach 150 credit hours (US Master's degree) in order to be a CPA US.

ACCA is better than US CPA. CPA waste of money Degree only valid in USA,
but ACCA recognized worldwide.
ACCA is worthless in the US. Don't advise people to aquire it if they live in the US.

I would like to work in the USA as an Accountant but Im not sure if getting a bachelors degree Accounting and Finance with a qualification in the UK would cut it. Would I have to move over there to study for the degree/CPA to have a recognized qualification?

Many accounting jobs in the US require or strongly prefer candidates with the CPA. Therefore, getting a qualification in the UK likely wouldn't help you land jobs here. In order to stand out, or at least among your peers, you'd probably need to pursue CPA, CIA, or CMA (CIA and CMA only if you're looking to work in internal audit or industry). Also, because the CPA US requires 150 credit hours, you'd want to look at applying to a master's program (preferably a master's in accounting so you can ensure you've taken all the appropriate accounting courses).

ACCA is better than US CPA
You will not be exempt from any of the four sections of CPA examinations. AICPA has no provision for exemptions at all.
However, ACCA grants some exemptions to CAs. Check their website for more information.

Hmm, I am not too sure actually, it is better to ask around locally (or ask the recruiters). But at least candidates can take the CPA exam in Bahrain which helps quite a bit.

Hmm... I wonder if individual countries have their own local accounting qualifications. Those would be the best in my opinion.
Otherwise, if you aim for US based companies, or those publicly listed in the US (i.e. the company is using US GAAP as part of their reporting) then US CPA license is useful.

It depends on whether or not you'll be working for fortune 500 or US-based companies. If working for US-based companies, definitely CPA.
