Whoa...this is good stuff. I tried to like this video several times, but all it did was turn the like on and off. So if you guys get a ton of notifications about that, I apologize...I was just liking it...a LOT 😁
Great tutorial many thanks for sharing it... I'm very new to Final Cut Pro so this video will help me a lot 👍 Good luck with your channel I've subscribed 👍
Did not know about htat smoothing option, you just saved me a bunch of time. Great work thanks. FYI i took your option course a few years back loved that too.
You are 100% correct about the focal length itself not causing the distortion you speak of. Speaking of wide focal lengths, I've never enjoyed the effect when stabilizing a clip shot with a wide lens. Way too much weird distortion. When the lens barely even pans, tilts, or moves in any way it changes the perspective drastically, it looks super weird and warpy when stabilized. A longer focal length lets Motion or FCP or whatever just slide the image around without distortion since the edges of the picture don't have as much pronounced perspective.
Unless u were going for that vibe lol but agreed good point. I wonder if trying “track region” in motion and defining a much smaller region of the image would help the weird distortion on wide lens as u described about. I might run some tests on that in motion out of curiosity but wonder if u had already tried that and can share your results.
To highlight if you're not inside the inner framing enough you could add a solid pink background underneath the video (I assume). I do this in FCP all the time as Handheld plugin doesnt always keep within the frame. (Nor does Spatial Conform always work right without leaving a sliver)
This is amazing, I’ve been searching for a way to do this with drone footage of yachts. Thanks so much! If you’d like to try this with some drone footage I’d be happy to send some over!
I didn’t know motion track feature was in Motion, wow, great examples on how to work with it! - P.S. you’re more photogenic than you give yourself credit for.
WONDERFUL! I have used Motion to some extent, but I am really baffled by your ability to find yourself around Motion’s all bells and whistles. How can you figure out what tool does what? Keep on watching TH-cam videos perhaps?
15+ years using Motion. It's very deep. If you want to really learn it, we have an entire library of Motion tutorials here: www.rippletraining.com/product-category/motion-learning-path/
For anyone wondering why focal length distortion is a myth... It's because it has to do with the relative distance of the subject to the sensor. When your subject is far away the difference between the distance to the sensor and the nose/ears is much less in relation to the total distance of the whole subject to the sensor.
Thanks so much! I wonder what took Apple so long to implement a tracker. AE is so far ahead at this point. I hope Apple looks at Adobe and tries to catch up on a bunch of those features.
Great video 👍. So if focal length doesn’t affect the distortion of an object, what does it affect? Just Field of view? If you had a flatter face and wanted to make the features stick out a bit more, you could just move closer to the camera, would you choose the focal length for framing purposes?
I was wondering how far I’d have to scroll before I saw someone justifying 8 and even 12k because of this tutorial. Lol I’m still old school and just recently switched to 4K because it’s still mostly a niche.
@@messyfilms6325 LOL. Except for my GoPro and iPhone, I'm still shooting HD with my real video cameras. Just working up possible scenarios to justify (to my wife) buying a 4k. Or bigger... Slightly off-topic: the new Nikon Z9 would suit me perfectly :-)
@Mark Spencer Is it possible tu use tracking with 360 footage, which is outputted after stitching with Insta or GoPro software? Motion is capable of importing and showing this material, but as soon as i add a camera and for this camera a track motion behavior, motion is not connected to the video, the box in the preview tab of the motion behavior is just empty, and therefore no selection panel appears for which you could choose the section of the current video position to start tracking with. 360 footage is just perfect for tracking, as you do not have to worry about where the object to track moves or how near or far it is, but this seems not to be supported by motion :(.
What’s a good tip on reframe match move but additionally when you need to switch between two subjects or objects? Ex. Centering person A then release for a few seconds then centering person B?
Sure just track them each separately and then trim the tracks to end one and start the other - maybe a few keyframes in-between. In FCP you do this in the Tracking Editor; in Motion, in the Keyframe Editor.
@@markspencer3104 ahhh totally didn’t think about that. I been overthinking it for my last few projects and have been doing the harder unnecessary methods lol. Thx for the great tip!
Quick question 🙋🏻♂️ is there any way possible to help convince Apple to add ease in and out graph editor to FCPX? :) drives me nuts it doesn’t have it.
Sorry but I think my comment was cancelled, so I ask again: do you think it's possible in Motion or FCPX to compare two skiers (or two runners, or two golf players, etc), during a race, to have a "ghost" and see when one goes faster than the other? Thank you!
The simple way would be to overlay the clips on top of each other and adjust opacity and perhaps the blend mode to show both of them - but this would also show both backgrounds. The more difficult approach would be to rotoscope one of the people. This could be done in FCP or Motion but is tedious and time-consuming as it involves key framing a mask with many control points (or multiple masks) frame by frame.
At 2:24 when i add motion tracking -> match move no box appears in my film and i can not add or drag one in. So i am stucked at this point :(. Any tips on what to try to follow the tutorial from this point on?
Thank you for the answer, this is an honor. In fact i bought Motion because of your video today, it is the latest version. It turned out that the object (a person riding a horse) could not be found by the tracking system. The material was filmed with a 360 degree camera (Insta 360 X2) and the quality is not good enough for tracking. But the Insta360 software can track and follow the horse, so it seems their algorithms are a bit more suited for this kind of material. With other films i was able to follow your tutorial up to the point where i tried to add smoothing to the Z scaling, which led to a crash of motion. But i will not give up, your tutorial was very motivating :).

Can you use the tracker to re-orient a 360 degree video in a regular project? Thanks.

Does the object tracker have a perspective or affine functionality? Or, do you have to use the tracker in cornerpin mode?
The latter.
