    Steve, I use a belt sander to sharpen my mower blades. Because of the flatness of the tool I get a much more acurate result and I use it length ways to get a much more even outcome. Once you try this you won't go back to any other method. Cheers from Brisbane Australia.

    I’ve been doing something similar, I use a 3M roloc’s with 80 grit and in a three inch size in my die grinder. It’s just takes minutes to sharpen a blade, it takes longer to clean the blade with a putty knife and a wire brush than it does to sharpen it. Great advice as usual, keep them coming!

    • @philiptinker1624
      @philiptinker1624 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The roloc discs been my go to for a while. I even use them on shredder blades rather than the angle grinder - seems to work fine.

    I love flap disks and have used them for many years to quickly and accurately sharpen my mower blades. From my ZTR to the 1/2" thick blades on my tractor's brush hog. Greatest grinding invention ever!

    I’ve been sharpening blades with a flap disk for years now. But remember this…inexpensive flap disk don’t last as long. I can sharpen 8-10 blades with a quality disc, cheap discs only last 2-3 blades. With cheap discs you can feel the grit shooting off the disc when it’s spinning.

    Good method. For years I’ve been using a grinding disc on my push mower. Place glad wrap over the fuel filler hole, screw the cap on over it & tilt the mower all the way back, and place a weight on the handle such as a brick to hold it down. Gets the blades razor sharp each time. If the mower won’t be used for a while just after a sharpen, then lightly brush the sharp edge of the blades with chainsaw bar oil & a smallish paint brush to keep the shiny steel from deteriorating.

  • @patthesoundguy
    @patthesoundguy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have been getting amazing results with the flapper disk on mower blades for years. I have a bike repair stand that fits on top of a speaker stand perfectly and I use it to hold trimmers, but it also holds mower blades at eye level so no bending over when sharpening mower blades. It makes it even faster and better. I have a grinder with a flap disk on it all the time I don't use regular grinding disks anymore because the flap disk is so much smoother and it keeps me from burning through thin material like mower decks when I'm welding them.

  • @chuckcawthon3370

      Scott.. You mentioned you have difficulty maintaining a proper angle sharpening a lawnmower blade using a bench grinder. I have been sharpening lawn mower blades for decades with a bench grinder. After needing to find a better faster way to sharpen them and keeping the correct angle, I researched all of the available commercial blade sharpener devices. I chose the RBG - 712. It beats them all in ease of use, speed and keeping the edge the correct perfect angle and straight. Flapper discs are a good all around tool that work well for most everything. Good tool for the average do-it-yourself home owner.

    I just pulled this video up today and wouldn't you know I just sharpened my three lawnmower blades yesterday with a flapper disk. I agree it works very well. I tried all kinds of methods before a friend put me onto this method. I used a grinder for a while but got concerned that I was overheating the blades so I began using a file. That worked but was time consuming and required a lot of effort. The flapper disc is the best method.

    Some of these lawn mower blade are so hard and thick and need a 30 degree angle which can be around a 3/8 wide on a thick blade. Those flapper wheels is good for a finish but I use a 7 inch grinder wheel which hogs it off fast. You need to clamp your blade to a vise or clamp to something else. I clamp mine to my loader bucket and grind my blades out side cause it just makes to much of a mess in the garage doing 3 or 6 blades at once. Some thin push mower blades you can get away with a 4 and 1/2 flapper disc. I use the hard 7 inch cutting blade as they last a much longer time. Then if you want a smoother finish you can use a 4 and 1/2 inch flap and with a little better control to make it shine if you like that kind of finish. Which is usually what I do.

    I use a flap disc for a lot of coarse sharpening. sharpening with file/stones for finer sharpening and small blades like knives
