4:10 - Yes it does start with the middle-8. As much as the producer said it was an orchestral score - it was actually all done with samples (John Debney with John Sponsler & Louis Febre).

However, every theme has to be judged on how the visuals match up and our emotionsl response to the episodes, neither of which we have access to yet. I do miss that ominous rolling bassline though. There is an argument to be made that the best dr who titles theme is the very first from way back in '63.

Sorry to say as much as I’m not against orchestral versions, if one is going to use any of Delia Derbyshire’s original arrangement then let’s hear more of the bass line. Since 2005 (and since 1980) there’s one element that’s been lost and that’s the creepiness of the music that had kids scurrying behind settees. It seems overblown and bombastic and not really different to what Murray Gold has served up before; however, along with the reappearance of RTD and Tennant I see this as a roll of the dice to try to get the big 2005-2009 primetime audiences back.
I watched the whole show and the I have to say Murray Gold is Doctor Who. They played Segun Akinolas tunes towards the end before this tune and I prefer all of Murray's compositions, I have to say.
Interested to see this in context and had wondered the same. Not sure if this will be a standalone for the 60th with another new one and titles for Gatwa
@@TheShallowProclamation It begs the question, would they waste money on composing a new theme which would only be used for three specials? They didn't do that for the 50th anniversary. In fact the 50th didn't use the regular opening theme and in 2014 they revamped it for Capaldi's era to start. So I don't think it will just be for the 60th. Why go to all the bother for just three specials, when in December we will have Ncuti's first full episode on his own?

I hope it turns out that this is only for the anniversary specials, because it's an absolute mess. Murray Gold is talented but the theme tune just doesn't suit his style, or is beyond his skill set. He is more interested in smothering it with his own busy flourishes. Perhaps he'd prefer to compose his own new theme tune.
I’m not keen I’m afraid. Murray Gold’s themes seem to get progressively worse. This isn’t remotely sinister. I prefer the electronic themes of Classic Who. Segun Akinola’s version was closer to the Classics.
@@topmandog1 I suppose but let’s not pretend we have something here that’s groundbreaking. The Chibnall era gets a lot of hate but at least the title sequence and score was different enough to be called new. Popular doesn’t necessarily mean good.

Fantastic orchestration! There's a landscape version available that's even better. The choral section is not even visible in this version.

It’s a Murray Gold Doctor Who theme….Not vastly different from what he did 15 years ago. Which seems to be the essence of the 60th anniversary .
Unfortunately series 4 and 5 is some of the most popular doctor who episodes and he was gonna bring it back in some way
