I spent 6 years as a "resident" of Holloman AFB (83-89), so I'm quite familiar with those roads (abeit 35 years ago). When heading north, would take 54 north to Carrizozo, catch 380 west to I-25. Had a pickup camper, so took 70 many, many times through Ruidoso to a favored fishing lake. And, been over Augustine more times than i can count. (Do they still shut down the highway for missile tests?) That "Truck Stop" in Tularosa was a stop taken after most every trip to Ruidosa. The name escapes me at this time, but the owner was a friend of the wife's. Thanx for the memories!
Stop by Arbuckle Truck Driving School when you come through Tulsa. A 30 minute visit would impress our students and possibly gain Mercer a driver or two!
Been through a bit of those area's when I was driving a MTL (mobile testing lab) for a military contractor MN to military base in Yuma Az. Border Patrol would check me out had "the book" . They loved "the book" , driver info was a page that said "if this person is not in vehicle they are considered kidnapped or deceased". They match your pic+info smile and off ya go!
That was a Nike Hercules missile (surface to surface or surface to air) at the wayside. Worked with those and Hawk missiles (surface to air) in the Army 71-76.

I worked in NM back in 98 for a custom harvesting crew. I can remember heading over the pass and down the other side in a Kenworth back in the day, great memories. Also remember having not such a good experience in a border patrol checkpoint between El Paso and Ruidoso 🙈, those were the days 👍🏻 🏴 🇬🇧
my mom use to work at White Sands. she made that long trip 5 days a week, from home in El Paso. think they had bus service and she took that. it was still off limits to non employees, then.

Nice weather I know Springfield those are all real good shops along that stretch, good luck with the APU, you’re probably doing the right thing not buying new and not getting involved with anything HVAC because they just won’t cool down a truck like a good rooftop. I just replaced my rooftop with the latest from Coleman and added the heating element and the smartphone feature is great, less wires to worry about too. I’m sure you’ll get a great APU in Springfield
I prefer that route when going down to Deming to visit family, be careful going into Carazozo , there's a cop who likes to hide in the trees on the south side of town right where they drop the speed down to 25 MPH!

getting a truck wash is a lot more expensive than when i was driving. depending on what i wanted done, i think 50 bucks was the max. even found one place in Alabama, or Georgia that was really cheap. everything for @ 30 bucks.

I remember driving from las cruces to white sands in my GFs civic with no ac. Drive forever and it seemed like we didn't get anywhere. Pretty awesome.
