Don't use 20000 cycles, one of the Fighter's side quests is un-completeable at that speed because of timing issues.

It is a great series to tell people about! This is a bit Spoilery though since you say where the safe places to sleep are and not just in the hints and tips section. A big part of the fun, I think, is the feeling of being in way over your head in a dangerous world - like the title says "So you want to be a hero?". Finding Erana's Peace the first time was an emotional experience because I was dying, being chased by horrible monsters and was locked out of town, and then..._that music_.
The combat is hardly the the best ever, and it varies from game to game, but still it's effective and atmospheric - I'm glad it's arcade and not turn based (that`s better for party based RPGs). I think the lag you're talking about was just how the programmers simulated low combat stats so - even if you've played before - early on in the game you have to be on your toes about when to run away, so you can't loot too many bodies early on and have to spend carefully and thus every new victory feels like an achievement. But there is some skill/strategy involved too; certain openings each opponent will display (if you can adjust to that lag), throwing stones, daggers and magic. I think I even prefer the EGA combat, with the monster all up in your face - though it is missing the slash attack - the controls aren't all that bad when you get used to them.
I can sympathise with what you say about time passing, and I guess the designers did too because the later games let you rest - not sleep - almost anywhere, for as long as you want (barring concerns like starvation, poison, exhaustion, etc). Though it used to annoy me, I've got to respect the original a little bit, the way I'm forced to deal with the passage of time because I feel "impatient", and have to do something with myself, but my health is low so I've got to deal with that too. It may not be "fun", the way games are supposed to be, but it was sort of immersive. At least there's usually _something_ to do with the time to better your character. I don`t generally like padding out games, but it always felt more like realism then padding.
I honestly think the original EGA game is the better one for many reasons, but probably my main one is the reason that you didn't like it; the parser interface. I don't care for dialogue trees taking over, because it made the game-play much too passive: click, read, click, read, bleah! With the EGA, I didn't know what to expect from a new character so you start with casual conversation, he'd make some reference to something and I'd have to pay attention in order to realize he, or someone he talks about, probably knows something more. This way, I`m asking the questions rather then facilitating the script. It makes a world of difference, but sadly has been gone from most adventure games since 1990, just when they were getting skilled with a user friendly parser.
There were also some other missing bits or things that came off less dramatically in the remake (not just nitpicks or my nostalgia, having grown up with Hero's Quest, but that's clearly a part of it :)) and though the claymation graphics are charming, there's nothing wrong with the EGA's 16 colour art.
Anyway, sorry for my impassioned rant and thanks for the information about the cycle settings.

Magus Marquillin That wasn't a comment, it was an ESSAY. ;D
But, it shows what the game series means to you. :)

***** Haha, I can't help myself when it comes gems like these - and since you had no public board on your website I had to keep it bottled up when this first came out. But yeah, you raised a few issues and I wanted to provide counter-points, in case you wanted to give it another chance or for someone else benefit.

I remember almost shitting my pants at a sight of a cheetaur when I was a kid. Love QfG!

There are ways to become a hybrid user of all 3 character classes without making the game too hard. You can use + or - keys to fine tune your stats and have the allocation pool of skill points cost less. Instead of having 5 in skill and it costing a lot of your character skill points you will have only 1 in that skill and you regain some of the lost character skill points.
Also for those ScummVm users who want to use that instead of DosBox might solve the lag issues with the combat in original QFG1.

Ah, Quest for Glory, one of my visited (but admittedly not very much) forums on the old Sierra Community Boards from like 21 years ago. (The other, more frequently visited boards were the You Don't Know Jack boards. XD)

This game and the police quest series will be my favorite Sierra games, when you had to type words out and try to figure out what to do... Now I bet in the remake you can find the thieves guild by clicking instead of "making sign"

There's a few ways to move time along without having to wait. Besides sleeping at the peace point, you can go to the castle and do work at the stables to move time along. The combat system really didn't utilize dodging or parrying and that's unfortunate. It was better to just get the timing down for your attack so that the counter attack didn't hit you.
If they ever release an improved version of this game with a few patched issues, more content and houses that you can break into, a few more spells and quests to complete and creatures to fight (a gryphon or dragon) that would be great. I spent hours typing "look sky" because I thought I could find and fight one of those creatures in combat similar to the trainer fight in the castle

It's been years since that comment, and I realize as this QFG1 if perhaps my favorite game of all time (ega version) I should share this here too. I actually orchestrated the intro by ear for full orchestra, yes I have it in full score lol. Hope it gives a smile all these years later

I love your channel, but HATED this review. Firstly, the original tools the remake in the face. The text parser was a far superior, and more interesting interface than the later cop-out mouse controls. The whole point of half of these puzzles was discovering what you had to type to complete them. The puzzles lose their entire point when you can just...click on things. I am biased, as the original EGA version is my favorite game of all time, in forty years of playing games. I really feel it is essentially the high point of roleplaying games, and with the exception of the sequel, the finest game in this genera we have been lucky enough to play. I think people forget that the challenge was the point, and pre internet, you had to figure these things out on your own. The fact you could get jobs, work, interact with the world in your own way...it was unheard of at the time. Such a heart break when you could simply click on someone with the talk icon, and have all the secrets exposed. Anyway, long rant...but I don't understand how someone around at that time, can miss the point of what made the original great. The remake is just a graphically enhanced waste of time though.

doug stuffly You point of view is understandable for sure. It really does come down to that, especially given that I never grew up with this game.
Never be afraid to voice your opinion, even if people you actually like may disagree with you. :)

Heh, agreed, and I happen to be a huge fan. I have been binge watching your ADG channel for weeks, since I discovered it a couple weeks ago via LGR. I really fail to understand the hate the text parser gets though. The puzzles were so much more challenging, and the experience so much more immersive. There are Sierra games to this day I have not solved, as I refuse to use walkthroughs, much like I refused to use hint books back in the day. At any rate, love the channel...though I am still waiting on an Alone In the Dark review *glares*

doug stuffly I'll get to Alone In the Dark eventually. As for text parser games in general, I actually prefer those from the Sierra family to their point and click games in general. This game was simply an exception for me.
