this anime is so underrated and i am so happy that a platform as big as this is watching it. this shit was an EMOTIONAL rollercoaster so get your restraints tight and enjoy this ride. plus the animation is super clean like i felt like i been to new york just from watching it.

Proof 1. go to the official Bananafish.tv site look for the characters then under it you will see a rectangle with an arrow > click it, you should see all of them in a rectangular picture some of the characters are black and white which means *dead* and colored if *alive* ...
Proof 2. Rewatch the season 2 opening and look for ash walking injured in the snow with the same coat when he died in the library, and you can see that he's remembering Griffin, Shorter and Eiji while walking injured he didn't die, he went to japan for Eiji.

Listen to me people who havent watched this show. There is a certain thing i noticed about it. Its quite serious, interesting with well written characters and heartwrecking plot at times. Basically speaking, its good. If you are avoiding the show becouse you dont like watching gay things then you are making a mistake. Unless a thought alone about people of the same gender having feelings for each other disgusts you then you should watch this. Its a really good show that puts pressure on something modern stories dont. Characters arent interesting becouse they are gay but are interesting and happen to be gay. and its just good.
I expect negative replies from misunderstanding people but if one person that hesitated to watch this anime for the reasons i specified will watch it then i would consider time writing this comment well spent.

thank you for putting this into words haha, it's an extremely misunderstood anime, many people pass it off as yaoi and refuse to watch it. it pisses me off that something that took so much effort is just put into genre it doesn't belong in lol.
I actually made my friends watch it, but I had to explain to them that the series is more than just a BL, and that it tackles serious problems like rape, child-trafficking, prostitution, corruption, murder, illegal organizations, and drugs. Not to mention all the psychological damage the main character went through. I knew for sure that if I only described it as BL or YAOI, they'd likely give me the dirty look and assume it's just another yuri-on-ice lovey-dovey story between two men with the purpose of entertaining young girls who fetishize over gays. If I didn't mention the heavy themes they wouldn't want to watch it for sure. I agree with what you said, Ash isn't cool just because he's gay, he is a cool character who just happens to be gay. I was annoyed when someone mentioned that Banana Fish would have been better if Eiji was a girl, as if they're saying that a show can't be just as good just because the main pairing were both men. The show was good just the way it is, if the viewers would choose to focus more on the important and heavy details instead of just freaking out over two men kissing on screen. Besides, the "romance" between Eiji and Ash is only a sub plot, and if people are still salty about it they could just perceive it as deep friendship.
@@reeverfan3729 Ash and Eiji have a non-sexual relationship though (and they refer to each other as friends repeatedly), so I don't know how people see that as gay anyway.
@@caesarsalad-xu4vy it has been confirmed that they two eventually would have had a sexual relationship, not at first, but eventually...I wouldn‘t describe their sexuality as gay tho but rather pan bc I just feel they fell in love with each other’s souls

I got really excited when I saw this pop up. I do genuinely hope you guys watch the full series, but I'm not sure if you guys were warned about the themes in the show. If you guys do know about them, I hope you guys are comfortable enough with them to continue.

@@lakriz116 And thats mostly it. The show didnt get off the ground as well as it should becouse it was labeled a strong yaoi since day one while it is not true. People that came for it only were disappointed and people who would enjoy it didnt see it. Sad.

Banana fish!!!! I love banana fish, it’s a shame that not many people considered watching when it was airing back then (just because it has “BL” elements, even though the show is more than just that).
Yeah, especially because the BL elements are so subtly. One could easily look at it as a bromance (until its too late and they're already in love with the anime).
Info: the manga was published from 1985 until 1994. "A Perfect Day for Banana Fish" is about how you are never the same after having experienced certain things. Just like the fishes called "Banana Fish" die after eating too many bananas, the main character from the book commits suicide after having experienced the horrors of the war.
The anime made a good job incorporating modern elements that didn't exists during the publication of the manga while keeping it all like the original story. I have *never* seen anything like this, i wish you kept watching it.
I find it really interesting how they mixed the 80s and the 2010s.

I think its because it was commercialized strongly as yaoi while its strong points(which are many) lie elsewhere.

bf manga is legendary and very popular in japan/asia!! it got an anime adaption pretty late but the anime and soundtracks are so good!

@@misschieflolz1301 It was not that gay really so its PR department fault for advertising it as such. They could have cashed in on that a lot more but they screwed up. I am a bit sensitive to gay content but i wasnt uncomfortable even once watching it. They do a good job of telling but not showing things directly. Truly well done.

I've consumed a LOT of Yaoi and this doesn't even really fit that genre. Yes, there are those themes, but it's told in a completely different light.
And like, that's literally the least of your worries with what else is going on. It's like 'is one little kiss between guys going to stop you from watching a great show?' since that was such a genius move.

in general banana fish is hard to react. from popularity is low so not enough viewers to the language. if ppl forget the anime does use very specific slurs on ppl which the creator demanded for the anime so ppl question that alot on the demands. and to add on their reaction patterns:
for vid to do good hey need to garner at least 15k views by a week after vid upload. if dont maintain this for avg 4 straight weeks for those react videos for said series then revenue wise its a flop to them and drop it for something else. they never fully say this but its obvious on their channel practices and past stuff they dropped.

I am just about to read this manga. I recently finished a different series the artist did (Yasha). Maybe I'll give this a shot. It's so weird seeing manga from the 80s/90s getting anime this recently. Lately at stores I've found English volumes of some of my favorite old manga. I nearly shit myself when I saw a giant book of Drifting Classroom (early 70's).
