Great music! Strong kinship with Scriabin, Richard Strauss, Korngold, from a distance Debussy shines over, and yet a world of its own. Apart from the remarkable quality of the orchestra - the recording itself is astonishing too! Thank you!

Genial!

I have never heard a work by Joseph Marx on any classical music radio station, only on the TV broadcast Music Choice. What a shame more people can't enjoy his magnificent achievements. Thank you for this posting.

yeah, i think that is the stigma of local composers, in time they are completely forgotten. only we fans can try and try that more classical fans than bvefore know about a genius like joseph marx!

very hard piece to pull off given the exceptionally complex polyphony and voice leading - but this sensitive performance really does the job. Far and away the best performance. It really convinces as a whole whereas others, I'm afraid, give magic moments only. I do wish this were available in high quality sound. The piece really does deserve a proper recording by Swierczewski. That's not being ungrateful, nachtstrom - on the contrary, I am VERY grateful for this posting indeed! From reading the score some time ago I had been convinced by it and longed to hear it; but neither the one live performance I've heard nor the Botstein recording succeeded in the extreme demands of this piece. They don't maintain its delight in excess while - crucially - revealing its very strong thematic control that only seems otherwise through ingeniously intricate elaboration, or its fundamentally traditional romantic-period structure. Both of these essential elements Swierczewski succeeds in bringing out here.
Bravi tutti! - including nachtstrom for allowing us to hear this.

thank you so much for your kind words. i also think that this is the only performance that does this monster justice :) it is really a pain that since years no one seems interested to do a proper recording! maybe it is too expensive, given the amount of players involved? oh how i wish marx was more known to classic music geeks...

@@nachtstrom It's the same performance, just a higher quality audio file. All other performances of this piece are, to this day, unfortunately disappointing.

Or...Balance the following equation....Daphnis and Chloe + La Mer on the one side .on the other Side An Alpine Symphony+ Porm of Ecstasy + Mahler 9th = Incredibly Sublime Symphony .

This is the kind of music that belongs on the radio station! Throw out Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin and let's have more of the unknown composers like Marx, Zemlinsky and Bax! This is why I don't go to the symphony anymore. -I am sick of the warhorse 100....
