    Shad, I have a history degree with a focus on Europe 400-1200 CE. Primarily my degree focused on Eastern Europe but my passion was England during that time period, being invaded by Saxons, Norse and Normans it was endlessly fascinating and if it were not for a dearth of classes in the region and time period I would have focused there. None the less I have done extensive research on my own. I have a few critiques for you as I know your knowledge base really picks up after the height Viking Era post Norman conquest.
    I disagree and agree with you on a lot of points here but these three things stood out to me.
    First, the Norse didn't have great lands for farming. You're right, it was a warmer time but the soil is/was of poor quality which resulted in low yields very close to 1:1 or 1:2 where England was about 1:3 even with the poor technology of the time. So farming and getting arable land was a primary motivation for going Viking. Wealth was a top priority for others since raiding Keivan Rus and other regions to the south and east just wasn't as profitable as it was previously.
    The second is just how disappointed I am with you not instantly recognizing Odin. "The stranger" or appearing in a hood is perhaps the most common way he would appear in stories to mortals. Then he turns into a raven which not only was an analog for Odin himself, but then it flew towards the enemy which in the pagan religion was often seen as a great omen of favor. That was actually something this trailer got really right about the mythology. I guess I just thought you would have caught that.
    Finally, on the leather. You're 100% right, leather armor if ever used would have been hardened through boiling and all evidence points to it being rare. However, leather clothes were not terribly uncommon. I do myself give a little benefit of doubt that it is not meant to depict armor but rather is meant to simply be clothing to help keep them dry, something leather does much better than wool or flax cloth. Considering these were a sea faring people keeping dry certainly would have been a consideration. History is not clear on the fur trim and though there was likely too much of it depicted here the Vikings did like to wear dead animals to intimidate just like the Saxons liked to put dead animals on sticks (sort of like banners) for intimidation purposes.
    As a side note, mail (for both sides) and helmets (for the Vikings) was somewhat uncommon early on in this era just due to how hard it was to produce though over time that certainly changed. It was certainly preferred, but few vikings had access. Since the English king being represented was Alfred of Wessex (the wax seal is clearly a copy of the coinage he minted in his likeness) that would put this in the early to middle of Danelaw/Viking invasions between 870 and 900 CE. The Anglo-Saxon armor was all wrong which you did spot perfectly, the axes were too broad and too big and the lack of shield walls did hurt.
    I don't want to go on too long, you did get a lot right, but again, your knowledge from watching you for a long time seems to focus on things after 1000 CE or before 400 CE. Not many really know this era well.

    • @patrickadams7274
      @patrickadams7274 4 ปีที่แล้ว +450

      From one Medieval historian to another, thank you for this. That is one thing a lot of commentary misses is especially that even though leather might not be meant/able to deflect blows from an axe, even thin leather is water resistant, wind proof, and could slow down a blade/arrow before it reaches the chainmail beneath. Meanwhile, while iron production to the degree needed to produce massive amounts of chainmail did exist, leather off of game animals was free if you could kill it.
      Hail to the Vikings, the creators of carbon steel and people that boasted a 90% literacy rate.

      @@enlightenedterrestrial During my grad degree, one of my professors was going over Scandinavian culture between the 8th-10th century. The matter of their alphabet (he used the Futhark as his prime example) came up and then he used a colleague's research for his evidence. It seems in almost every settlement that we typically associate with Vikings, there was a hole dug near each village. The hole was basically their landfill which they would toss any object they regarded as trash. Inside they found hundreds of small slabs of bark with runes carved in them. The words? Shopping lists for their raids (Hagar was right in this case), children practicing writing their names or drawing maps, and orders for weapons and ship parts. The sheer proliferation of slabs and an examination by a paleographer said that they had nearly a 90% (close to 96% in some villages) representation of literacy among the population.
      This was the single biggest example of "one man's trash is another man's treasure" I had ever heard.

      @archibaldc.1833 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mefit1 Yes but imagine an army of thousands of soldiers all clad in leather. That's a lot of animals that need to be hunted and killed and then skinned and then that skin needs to go through an involved process that requires time and talent, and we aren't even at the point where it's being made into armour yet. Why do all that with more limited resources when you could just use textiles that are just about as effective and much easier to mass produce and has a more sustainable source?
      Sure, it might have been more common than Shad thinks (I personally believe it was) but the amount of effort to produce it compared to others would probably make it less popular.

      Odin wouldn't wish people to die quicker, but he would walk through the field of battle to pick out the bodies of the bravest warriors for the Valkyries to carry off to Valhalla, so he could have been doing just that. Also, one possible interpretation of seeing Odin on the battlefield could be as a premonition of your own impending death, which would be closer to what you are saying; however Odin transforms into a raven, and then flies towards the Saxon lines which would likely be interpreted as an omen of victory over the Saxon's.

It can happen there but the only thing we heard on the radio were people talking about the extreme good weather and that you really have to protect your self with subprojection, especially baby's, it seemed like a couple had died because the there parents didn't protect them against the sun and left them for hours outside.

The monasteries often had a lot of wealth due to being apart of the church but also due to their ability to make paper, documents, and books. Naturally, since most of the people who could write at the time got constantly attacked and harassed by "godless heathens" they wrote a lot about how much they hated them.

They even went to lengths of inventing low-alcohol mead/beer of the time in order to more easily obtain sanitized drinking, because regular water from wells could often be dirty and a risk to people's health. Right. So the kite shields are 100% anachronistic. So I guess they wanted to have a large visual difference between "danes" (actually norwegians in this case) and saxons. WHich leads to the saxons being time travellers and the danes not using helmets... great.

    We actually were given the time period that this is taking place. Look back at the scene where the antagonist king is writing the letter and look carefully at his signature and seal. The seal is the same as coin artifacts that have printed the visage of Alfred of Wessex. So our character is fighting against Alfred the Great.

    the shields in game are accurate according to your description. that cut scene may have looked like metal rings around the shield but during gameplay i have been paying attention and they are wrapped in a leather ring around the edge with a few metal clips to hold the leather in place
