Friendly reminder that Esmeralda is hiding in the chapel because otherwise she would be killed and she doesn’t know how she’ll get out and she still calls herself lucky and this character (and story) is vastly underrated
Abbie C I think she's trying to not be arrested. Phobus didnt arrest her because he claimed she claimed sanctuary. Frollo is banking on her eventually trying to leave because gypsies "don't like stone walls".
melissa saint Yeah but let's be real the original Hugo novel wouldn't work today, and for good reason. I didn't mind the Disney version, it pulled more from the 1939 film version and made decent changes. It also has one of the best music scores, (my fave being 'Helfire'), and Frollo is arguably one of the best Disney villains of all time, cause let's be real that's one repressed and complex dude. The biggest problem with this movie is it's tonal issues (the gargoyles being an example of this, they should never have been included).
Athina Catton Athina Catton I wasn't complaining, btw, just marveling....even after all these years, it amazes me. Disney basically took the setting and costumes and wrote a different story, which is kind of impressive-- though, yes, they draw from the Laughton version (it surprised me that they kinda went darker than it did) . "Complex" is so right, lol...so complex that Disney had to divide him into two characters! They make him a simple villain, and erase or ascribe all his good deeds elsewhere. I was always shocked Disney decided to attempt this at all, because (despite the fact that I read it as a child) it is not nooot a children's story. I'm curious, in what way do you think the original story wouldn't work now? Or do you mean, interpreted for kids, or as a musical?
People, that "angry and demanding" tone you're hearing is DESPERATION. This is basically her last attempt to get help for her people, praying to a higher authority she's not even sure she believes in but is willing to beg for help to at this point. Remember, theatre and motion picture are not the same medium. Each requires different acting. Theatre needs more movement, more intention, in order to capture the audience's attention. Not saying that gentleness doesn't work, but it's not the same to be at a recording studio singing a song several times until you get it right and having it edited and enhanced than having to sing live and be heard by everyone, michrophone or not. And what better way to give that extra strength than by using a powerful emotion such as desperation.
Thank you for this. I like how she acted out "I ask for nothing" since it makes a lot of sense; she looks around thinking "Can you believe these people??" They already have so much and still want more for themselves while she's only asking for the basics.
Never really thought about it like that. I always it was a silent prayer. Thanks for opening my eyes to a new perspective. This is one of my fav songs.
@@AutismThespian1993 I think it kind of is a silent prayer, except it is being expressed as a song created to let you hear and feel what she is putting into said prayer.
Hi everyone! Thank you for taking the time to watch this vid from our lovely production of Hunchback at the 5th Avenue Theatre. Thank you for your comments. Most of them I am happy to say are positive and I appreciate the support. Others of you have mentioned my enunciation. I may have "over" enunciated but if you have ever been to the 5th Avenue Theatre, you would know that it is a huge venue that stretches quite far and wide away from the stage. Enunciation is paramount in a space that large. Perhaps I over compensated but I'm certain that every person in that theatre could understand me from wherever they were sitting. The other thing I'd like to address is color-blind casting. Some of you seem to find it "inappropriate" that I, a woman of color, was mis-casted somehow. Some of you mentioned Esmeralda being Romanian. Guess what? Diversity is a movement in theatre that allows people of all backgrounds an opportunity to play roles that are usually played by a person European descent for example. Rosie in the production of Mamma Mia is usually played by an over-sized caucasian woman. I had the opportunity to bring that character to life. Some roles are written strictly for that ethnicity, I personally do not feel like this is one of those roles. Esmeralda to me can look like any ethnicity. She is a Gypsy. An outcast. As a matter of fact, as a woman of color, I can relate to being "left" out and discriminated against. As far as I'm concerned, Esmeralda and I are one in the same in a lot of ways. What does it matter if Esmeralda is "black" so long as the story translates and is being told? I encourage you to think outside of the box and really think about what you say before you say it. Your words matter. Thank you for your feedback and stay tuned for more amazing adventures. I'll be around. ;)
Dan'yelle Williamson i know this is a year late but I just have to tell you not only how important this song was to me growing up, but how much of a powerful take on this song you’ve given. You brought a desperation and frustration to this piece that lends itself so well to the story, and you did it with grace and talent and an incredible range both on your acting and your voice. This song is one I listen to probably way too often, and I’ve heard dozens of people sing it. And my top three are the original, yours, and the woman who sang the Québécois version of this song. This particular song even within the lyrical beauty of THBoND stands out so much, and it takes not only vocal talent, but passion and connection to the song to deliver it the way you have. Im sorry for being wordy but basically I just want to say thank you for the work and rehearsals and time you put into this, because you brought a moving, fresh, and accessible take on this timeless and emotional classic
ik we all noticed how this version is more demanding than others but honestly??? im so down like esmeralda has had ENOUGH w all the shit she and her people and others (like quasi) have to deal with simply by existing why SHOULDN’T she be angry ? this performance is amazing aaaaa
This truly showed the desperation of those rejected in society at the time and showed how angry they were that some got life easier as they were simply born into a good life. Kudos to this beautiful woman for showing the true anger the outcasts and Esmeralda felt
As a singer, I am absolutely *blown away* by this interpretation 🎵 I ask for *nothing* If you can't feel that in the 7th row balcony, then you're at *the wrong show* 💐🤩👂🥰👏👏
When I saw this show live, when it got to God Help the Outcasts, which is one of my favorite Disney songs, one I've probably listened to well over 200 times, I felt like I had never heard it before, and it took all of my self-control not to start loudly sobbing in the theatre. I'm so glad this version is now on TH-cam!
The first time I watched this, and each time after, my eyes watered at the last 🎵children of God🎵. Live performances are often better than listening to recordings so I’m sure I would’ve needed a lot of tissues.
So many people in the comments section are pretty adamant about the song being a gentle song. However, I would argue that having someone who is a bit angrier sounding also makes sense. Think about it. Gypsies we're outcasted for being thieves and doing magic and performing for money. However, they were never afforded the opportunity to other than what they've always done. The gypsies were not at fault for their plight, and everyone back then trusted in God to make things right and yet the gypsies we're always struggling. It makes sense for Esmeralda to be pissed at him and desperate for help when it seems like God has turned his back on her people for no reason.
Cecilia Warfield bingo. She is angry because she is apart of a greater society that excludes and disdains her very being. I felt that in this rendition
the part where she sings " I ask for nothing"...oh boy .... i got goosebumps all over my body ..... so intense!!! beautiful work guys!! Also i read in the comments a lot of people complaining about the existance of enunciation with words. Honestly i believe that "esmeralda" had every reason to be angry and frustrated about her situation at this point. The song i believe is not just a pray to God but more like a desperate cry for help torwards him, making her performace right on spot.
Holy crap. This is excellent. The way she's portraying the desperation she feels for her people to be accepted by God is almost tangible. I'd much prefer an accurate expression of emotion than a technically perfect performance of the song.
Am I going to just keep commenting on all the videos from this production? Probably. Because as a Hard of Hearing person who has also been performing in musical theatre for thirteen years, this show is SO important to me. (Not to mention the fact that I’ve been obsessed with Hunchback of Notre Dame since I was about five years old) But this song is one of the ones in the show that affects me the most, for a whole bunch of reasons that I’m not going to get into in the comment section of a TH-cam video. But this performance is so hauntingly beautiful I’m sure that I’m going to be listening to it on repeat for a long time. Dan’yelle, like the rest of this cast, is perfect for this show. Also, as someone who lives on the other side of the country who wont get the chance to see it live, thank you for uploading clips for us to enjoy.
Yeah I love the movie too it’s so underrated lot of the kids today have never heard of it their so obsessed with Frozen and Elsa let’s hope the live action gives it the attention it deserves and Joshua who plays Quasimodo in this and is deaf I’d love to see him in the role not a hearing person
How is a prayer demanding? Prayers are personal. Prayers are our way to express ourselves. Prayers are freeing. And what’s the message here? She’s asking for things for others. This song is for hope and love and equality. She’s praying for the people she loves and understands.
I don't normally comment on videos but this is my favourite rendition of this song ever. The acting is exactly how I always imagined it and I love that you can feel every emotion not only through her acting but her voice as well.
OMG, literally with the first fucking notes I burst into tears. This performance is somehow so emotional and desperate. I am speechless. This never happened to me before. Bravo!
I have watched this video three or four times since I discovered it this morning. I am blown away by Dan'yelle's performance. The choice of direction and acting in this scene really is what drives it home for me. The emotional build up shows the depth of the character. From what I have seen of this production, it has blown me away. The struggles of each character are really brought out by the actor's that portray them. I hate I was not able to see the entire production, it is one I think would resonate here, in 2020.

Abbie C actually she wasn't hiding. She just left cause the crowd was mad at her for releasing Quasimodo. She talked to Frollo right before this song

One of the best Esmerelda performances ever. Was absolutely riveted seeing this live.
Amazing performance!
No doubt she has a nice voice, but is it me, or is there too much enunciation with the words as she's singing? Anyone else hear it?
Naenesa I believe that that is the point. The ASL interpreters on the side are for the deaf and hard hearing, but annuncuation helps too I guess?
YES! and her vibrato is a little too much :)
I know if I were deaf or hard of hearing, I wouldn't want to have to choose between watching the interpreters and watching the performance
lou mertens makes sense.
Naenesa and something that I just noticed, it might also help lipreading.
