My grandfather gave it to me to read because he knows I love history. He grew up during WW2 and is a firm antifascist. He was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and I wanted to finish it before he died because I want to discuss the book with him.

Great analysis. After reading The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms, I found this novel to be a very clear representation of Hemingway's evolution as a writer. The way he manages to portray the characters' emotions in FWTBT sticks out compared to those, which is especially interesting since it is written in a third-person perspective rather than first person.

Just finished it this past week. I think what struck me most was the way Hemingway wrote Robert’s internal dialogues with himself. It was so personable how he depicted the inner thoughts, almost felt like as the reader I was intruding on extremely personal things lol.

Great review! I haven't read this since 2018 while I was living in Barcelona and became really interested in the Spanish civil war and read a lot of fiction and non fiction about it. I really appreciated this novel during the first read, but it also had a lot of misfires for me as well, but the overall scope was undeniable. I found, however, over time and reflection that I started to admire those misfires more and more and inversely dislike several aspects I originally admired 🤣. This was the second novel I read by Hemingway, my first was The Sun Also Rises, which I think is his second best novel, my favorite of his, and probably the best place to start. I have been thinking recently about going back to this one to see how I compare as a different reader.

Small note: thee/thou are the informal version of you. So when he says something like 'Thou art much woman' its a translation of the informal version of spanish. Something said between friends

The fkn ending wrecked me. I’ve read several Hemingway novels. Saw Bradley Cooper throw this out the window in Silver Lining Playbook, and knew it was not gonna end well, just didn’t know how. I had to read the last chapter in a few pages a day to brace myself. Little Rabbit !

Nice run down on one of the big classics. I picked up your novella and have it on my TBR for April.

In our Time, Big Two Hearted River, The Old Man and The sea and Farewell to Arms are my favorites.

I thought a farewell to arms what pretty tense and entertaining to read (read it when I was at the place where things unfolded)

Re: These Novels Will Shatter Your World View
Can you help me with something? I viewed your video mentioned above a few days ago. It was a normal video with a comment section underneath. I went back to the video to revisit some of the comments, but now the video only displays as a "short", of course with no comment section. Did you move the video off your main page and place it with the "shorts"? I would still like to see the video in the original form with a comment section. Would you be willing to put it back with the main videos?

Not sure why you’re not seeing it but the video is still public and the comments should all still be visible. It’s always been a short

@@williampdozier I found the icon to open the comments and I had a look. There seem to be some missing comments. It's really strange, that video opened in wide format when I first saw it and now it only opens as a short, and you say its always been in that format. Anyway, thank you for the response.

    hello, will
    all good ?
I still haven't particularly liked anything I've read by Hemingway. I found it weak and a little redundant. Many people recommended his stories to me.
In Library Science college I studied his iceberg theory.
In short, he seems more interesting to me as a reader of great classics and a friend of Fitzgerald than as a writer.
    any recommendations?
    kisses from São Paulo, Brasil

He was best at short stories. I would consider reading more of those. But his style might just not be for you, and that’s okay

It’s terrible. Due to the fact it’s heavily revised and replaced with: obscenity and expletive. There’s one part where Jordan is just absolutely upset during the operation and the whole chapter is covered by substituted words by the revisionists.
Hemingways family shouldn’t have to meddle with his life’s work and just let readers appreciate the story for what it is. Have to find a much more dated previous edition of the novel.
