You gotta feel for Colin Montgomerie. He HAD IT right in front on him. He makes birdie on 18 or even par, because Phil double bogeyed 18, he wins. He’s probably still regretting that 2nd shot. As for Phil…..Bones REALLY needed to tell him to just put the driver in the bag for the day after 16. It’s kind of funny because Ferrie basically modeled what he actually needed to do on the 18th to win.
The second shot was a much worse decision than the poor tee shot.
Is it just me, or does Ogilvie look like Aaron rogers?

As a Tiger fan who never liked Phil, seeing him walk up to the 18th green with that stupid grin on his face was so awesome 😂
I'm a big fan of Mickelson and I remember thinking that he was making club selection mistakes off the tee all through the back nine and absolute errors on shot selections all the way down the 18th. For a player of his caliber to play 4 of the worst shots of his career all in a row on 18 was hard to watch......
He was hitting the ball everywhere, even good decision making doesn't help if you can't execute
With that said he should have punched out onto the fairway on 18. Maybe he hits a bad wedge shot and makes 6 anyway but it would've been better to see him try

Ehhh....I don’t know if I would go that far. It’s easy to misjudge the distance to the green if you’re not careful. Monty thought his adrenaline would kick in and give the ball an extra boost.

Michael Sklar He hit it fat. Even if he fanned it right, had he hit a 6 iron instead of a 7 iron, he would’ve at least been able to be above the hole and not in that thick rough below the hole.

In a sense Phil was tricked into thinking he could hit the fade on his 2nd shot, just like he did on #17. The Golf Gods objected to such foolishness and the rest is history.

Imagine Jack or Tiger in Phil's shoes on the 18th Tee. Jack would have blistered a one iron down the middle and Tiger would have hit the stinger.

@@DanielSong39 Yes, he did as he played with a heavy heart as the US Open was shortly after his father died. He was very close to his dad. I wasn't replying to Tiger specifically about what he did or not did in 2006 US Open, but his overall strategic mind and golf course management.
@@chetroberson5760 Actually I've seen Tiger in this situation several times, he's hit a number of bad tee shots and had to scramble for par or made bogey on several occasions. He probably doesn't try the stupid shot and hit a tree though

Johnny MIller just was hammering Mickelson. I think he was just mad that Phill just didn't play smart. I don't think Phill will ever win a U.S. Open, but still great, Hall of Fame golfer.
The second shot was an obvious layup position, take out the short iron and set up a wedge 3rd. It's such a no-brainer that most players just do it without thinking.
I think Phil just didn’t think that second shot through. That hole location was in a place where he could get a wedge close. If he just punched it out to about 100-120 yards, I bet he’d have had at least a 50-50 shot of winning outright with a par. He surely wouldn’t have lost it on Sunday with that approach.
Love and miss Johnny Miller commentary. Honesty and unfiltered speech.
Winning this would’ve changed Phil’s career because then he goes to the British Open with a chance to win the career grand slam & hold all four major titles simultaneously & that would’ve put him right up there with Tiger in terms of greatness. He’s still a HOFer, but winning the US Open would’ve put him on another level.

Montys collapse reminds me of Kenny Perrys collapse at the 18th Masters in 2009.
I remember another slip up for Perry more offensive than Augusta. That yr at the PGA he was in the booth up on 18 talking with the beoadcast...meanwhile Mark Brooks rolled in to tie up the score..and Kenny was left cold-stunned and lost a playoff

Long hole, if he hits a 4 wood onto the fairway he has a long iron or another fairway wood to the hole, not an easy 4
If he banana slices the 4 wood into the rough it's an instant punchout and he's struggling to make 5
If he only hits a 20 yard slice with the driver he has an outside chance of hitting the green and a much better chance of making 4
Obviously you're not accounting for a 50 yard slice, at that point you might as well pack up and go home

This championship was just unbelievable. The number of players that fell apart down the stretch. This was Mickelson’s to lose, and he did. But Monty had his chance after Mickelson was leaking oil. What a tournament, what a finish.

Mikel Hylkema Ogilvie hit a perfect drive into a divot, and spun off the green when two feet of carry got him a close range birdie putt yet he still got up and down.. my point is he did what had to be done and won it..

Monty’s biggest loss . He played so well and one bad iron shot on the last hole ... he also made a mistake with his first putt, never should have ran it so far past. Tough one for him.

This final round is what turned me into a golf fan and oddly enough a huge Mickelson fan 😆 The drama of his collapse was just incredible to watch. The NASCAR race at Michigan was in a rain delay so I decided to turn on this final round and I became hooked.
My PGA watching days go back to Jack Nicholas at Augusta in 1986. Yet, until Tiger came along in 1997 I didn't start becoming an addict :} and watching PGA events for the next 25 years. That's what watching Tiger has done for my generation. Your seeing him at the near end. Seeing what he did "LIVE" and unexpected, it was a WHOLE different experience :}
. If you EVER get a chance go to a PGA event. I went to the 2018 FedEx Cup event near me in PA. Insane! One of the best events I ever have been to. It was the who's who of golf!

The irony is that this misses Ogilvy's 4 bogeys in the middle of the round that sent him from 2 ahead to 2 behind. It looked like Ogilvy's tournament to win for much of the day and it seemed like he had blown it with a string of bogeys in the middle of his round.
DanielSong39 he didn’t really blow it he had a one shot lead around the turn, before he made some bogies but Phil also birdied 11 and 13. It looked like it was a little too late in the going for a young guy like Ogilvy (despite his impressive win at the WGC Match Play earlier that year at La Costa), nobody thought it was a “choke”. Ogilvy won the tourney with impossible par saves at both 13 and 17, getting somewhat lucky both times but sealed the deal with his great up and down at 18 after driving into a divot.
Nobody thought he really had a chance until he pitched it close on 18, even when he had a lead in the middle of the round it was assumed leaderboard gravity would filter him out. Like Zach Johnson at the 2007 Masters, you keep waiting for them to choke and make a double bogey but they don’t, however he was somewhat expectedly leaking some oil.
Ogilvy definitely didn’t choke here, he didn’t play the best golf on Sunday but the guy who did (Monty) just handed it away on the last, and Phil (who was just as fortunate as Ogilvy to have to the lead on 18, he didn’t play a great round either) then choked just as hard. But this was never ogilvy’s to lose, yea if he could have extended the lead at hole 12 or 13 he had a chance to put it away, but it’s so difficult to extend the lead at a place like winged foot and before you know it you’ve made a couple bogies and Phil’s made a couple birdies.
@@TheLocalLt Pretty similar to Ben Curtis in the 2003 Open Championship where he had the lead in the back 9 and made 4 bogeys coming home before making a par save on 18, but Bjorn "choked" because he collapsed after Curtis did
DanielSong39 the common thread is that Mickelson, Monty and Bjorn all had the lead in the final few holes before having a disastrous, memorable, blow up hole where they blew the championship all at once.
Whereas Curtis and Ogilvy didn’t really collapse they were simply leaking oil, both guys made huge 10 foot par putts on the 18th hole to post the clubhouse lead.
Even a blowup hole doesn’t have to be a choke: By following your logic, Craig Parry actually choked the 1999 British Open not van de Velde, because Parry had a 2 shot lead with 7 to play before making triple at 12 and then missed a tap-in at 17 that would have put him in the playoff. But Van de Velde is considered the choker because he had it in his hand on the very last holes and then blew it all at once, like Phil, Monty and Bjorn.
You can definitely collapse over the course of a round (Norman 96 Masters, Scott 12 British Open) but you have to be expected to win and then blow it, nobody thought Ogilvy or Ben Curtis were winning when they took a mid-round lead. What happened to them is what Mike Tirico calls “leaderboard gravity”
@@TheLocalLt But by that logic Spieth had "leaderboard gravity" in the 2016 masters since he had 9 holes left instead of 3 holes left. But no one says that, they say he choked.
As for Parry, that was painful to see, he had the tournament in hand and threw it away from 12-17. Justin Leonard was actually tied for the lead with 4 holes left and made 2 bogeys. Yes Van de Velde choked but he doesn't have a 3 stroke lead if the other guys don't choke beforehand.
Winged Foot is already hard enough but when you add the USGA into the equation all bets are off

Monty should have hit his 2nd on the 18th when Singh was still sorting out his drop, no penalty for playing out of turn and he'd have hit the green. By the time he did hit his rhythm was destroyed.

Ogilvy was so lucky on the 17th with his 3rd shot, how it didn't bounce into the thick rough was amazing - then he chipped in of course.
He choked more than anybody. Cannot remember one quality shot he hit the last hour unless you call getting up and down on 18 after choking his approach as quality. He somehow got there but was never the elite player people thought he was after this. He burned up a lot of bettor's money as he was overbet for years until people realized he was essentially a journeyman player.

Ogilvy choked as bad as anyone. If that chip doesn't rattle the pin on 17 it goes off the green and he gets double bogey instead of par. It wasn't a good chip...the flag got in the way. Good drive on 18, whiffed second shot, but he did make the putt. You can argue that nobody deserved to win this major. I can argue there were seven or eight chokers, including Kenneth Ferrie.
Winged foot played so brutal that week with high roughs and really fast greens winner was at +5 1974 played so hard the winner was +7 Jack Nicklaus shot +14 a prime Nicklaus highest score ever in his career
This was such a Phil day in all the wrong ways. I do hope he wins a US Open eventually, even though he's now Champion Tour eligible.

As much as I love Pebble it just doesn't feel right seeing us opens with people at 10 under. When you see first place at +3 you know you are watching the best in the world playing a very challenging course setup.

yep. the course was brutally tough for that Open. I forgot Phil if would've won, it would've been 3 consecutive majors. He had won the PGA in 05, then the Masters to start 06

Amazing how so many players careers go downhill after winning a Major Championship. Ogilvie, a player who always seemed to contend, just could not maintain his momentum after winning this US Open.
He was a top player up to 2010 and was still a solid player in 2014. That's a pretty good run.
His career didn’t really go downhill he was still a top player for several years after this. He also had won the match play in 2006 at la Costa
He reached a career height #3 in the World June 29, 2008. Far from going downhill after this.
I was just wondering what club did Monty switch too last second ? Did he club up or club down ? And why ? Nerves got to him.
I think he clubbed down to maybe allow for a bit of adrenaline but hit one of the worst shots I've ever seen him hit. As you say it was pressure, probably his best opportunity to win a major and it just got to him. Great pity, he was a superb player over the years and did deserve a major win but golf can be a cruel game.
@@awp7662 Sometimes I think caddies should say something, but I guess they really can’t because if turns out bad, they would blame the caddie for interfering. Even though his pay would be affected, but that may give them the right to say something, assuming they say the right thing. I remember Tom Watson British Open to win putting from off the green, not on green surface (fuzzy green), I was “ chip it, you’ll put it short”. Then missed the putt. And he lost in a playoff to Clink. Watson known for his famous chip-in, sad to see him not chip it and for a memorable legendary major win instead as choke. Oh well, that’s golf.

The crowd shouting Lets Go Phil when he is buried in the bunker on 18, essentially having blown the US Open, is the most inappropriate crowd reaction to any big time sport event ever. So gross to not understand the context there, and unload that drunken nonsense on a guy whose life is flashing before his eyes.
Back then Mickelson didn't have any discipline in his game. If he was older I believe he would have punched down the fairway been 3 on and 2 putt for a 5. Mickelson def would have had the edge in an 18 hole playoff with the crowd behind him and his short game.

@@DanielSong39 he lost that because he grew overconfident and started trying crazy stuff like his 2004 Ryder Cup stunt with the equipment change which enraged Tiger, but some of it worked to perfection like his aggressive play at Baltusrol in the 05 PGA which he won, or his strategy of using two different drivers the next spring in 06 where he won at Atlanta by 13 shots and then won the Masters the next week, then Phil made a big show of prepping for Winged Foot by spending weeks and weeks at the course leading up the US Open, which would have been his 3rd major in a row and there were talks of the “Mickel-slam”, it’s not hard to see why he was so overconfident during the final round, he felt he knew every inch of Winged Foot and he was being hailed as “aggressive yet genius”, Tiger was at a low moment after missing the cut following his father’s death, everything was coming up Phil. So he rolled the dice, but they came up snake eyes
@@TheLocalLt Some gambles are worth the risk and some are just dumb. Sometimes the dumb gambles work out (the long iron out of the pine straw in the 2010 Masters) and sometimes they don't. This one was just dumb though, even Mickelson admitted that.

Could you imagine if Phil won in his final year on tour here at Winged Foot, during a year when so much hope around the world has gone down the drain? How much of an impact that would have would be astounding!!!!
