    You should always remove the brake reservoir cover and leave it on top loosely so to reduce the stress on the overall system when pushing in the caliper piston. Second, add a bit of that grease you used on the brake pad ears so that they slide smoothly.

    • @TheWilferch
      @TheWilferch ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Brake fluid top cover is vented...so to remove and leave on loosely is not required...but yes....be mindful that when you push the caliper pucks back into the caliper....you ARE causing the brake fluid reservoir level to rise...so maybe syphon out a bit first, or drain a bit via a hose from the caliper bleed screw....then refill when done.

      I don't understand why some folks are watching this video with poor suggestions that dont hold water. If you have answers, then your brakes should be done for a long time ago. You do not have to open a reservoir it's not chevrolet or ford it's modern style car system is updated from Tine. You thought your house mechanic 😮

    The clip that attaches to the hardware is necessary, its not just a wear indicator, another purpose is to fill the gap of the tolerance allowed between the pad and the hardware. If you don’t install the clip, it will make a “click” noise when switching from forward and reverse or from reverse to forward. It’s found in Toyota service manual.

    So no one is going to mention the fact that he should of changed his rotor. Those Pads will not last with all of those notches and groves on the rotor. Other than that pretty good video.

    • @lfrankl53
      @lfrankl53 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should take them to the auto parts store and have them resurfaced if they are within specs. They also most likely have at least a little bit of warpage that this would eliminate. You should resurface new rotors as well before installing them. And hit those rotor surfaces with a few shots of brake clean and wipe them off with a clean rag or paper towels.

      You dont have to do that it's within specific margins, plus you can use 180 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface, and brakes will do the rest

  • @TheWilferch
    @TheWilferch ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent !.... short and to the point !!.....Hint.....you COULD have only removed the BOTTOM 14mm head screw, and SWING up the caliper. Once up, you can push the caliper body back and forth ( direction: in and out into the direction of the car center and back out again)....to see if the upper pin is not locked/corroded, but can move. When all done and re-installed into position.....and the bottom pin is re-inserted....only THEN take out the top pin....lube up...and put back in. The point?---> swing it up like a door on a hinge is easier than taking the whole caliper off.

    Please do not use the lubricant in this video. It's a good video, except for the lubricant. The toyota brake system generates more heat than the gel lubricant is designed for. It will gum up the caliper pistons and cause seizing. Need a super high heat lubricant. I think those would be a lithium or silicone based lubricant which the gel is not. Also the pertroleum lube does not play well with the rubber material in the system. Otherwise good job on the video.

    First time doing breaks & I have to because I'm broke! On the caliper, what and why are you pushing back with the C clamp? And how do you know if it's done being pushed back? What do you do after you've accomplished this? I need all the info and visuals I can get to do this! Lol! I'm a 62 year old go getter and I'm always up for a challenge! Can't wait to tell my kids, I did it!! With your video it seems pretty simple. My dad taught me how to change my own oil, back before Kwik Kar!! I loved hanging out in the garage with him! We did body &, engine work together on my Nova, painted her, had the seats recovered, etc. Loved it!! I wanted to be an auto mechanic, but my mom said "no daughter of mine is going to be a mechanic"! She enrolled me in typing classes so I could work on the up and coming computers that will be in all offices someday. I wound up marrying an A&P mechanic, who we lost 8 years ago. Thanks, and wish me luck!

    • @5MinuteFixit
      @5MinuteFixit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mary Ward this is one of the easiest things to do for maintenance on most cars, you can do it! You are pushing back the piston on the caliper, it will stop when it is fully open you will know. Good luck doing it yourself, please consider subscribing if this video helped you! Thank you!

    • @TheWilferch
      @TheWilferch ปีที่แล้ว

      WHY?.....because the worn brake pads allow the piston to move more forward than you like, and will make it impossible to refit the caliper to the new (THICKER) pads....that are thicker than the worn pads which allowed the piston to come out "more". You want to "push back" the caliper piston to allow space for the thicker (new) pad.

    That Permatex lube is not good for rubber. The boot the pin goes through is rubber. It's for metal to metal contact only. It says that on their site. Lots of options but make sure they're ok for rubber. I use 3M Silicone Paste - 3M 08946. Otherwise, great video!

    You stated there are few were four pieces of hardware per wheel. I have an additional piece of hardware that goes on the new brake pads. It replaces the arc clip on the bottom of each original brake pads. Can you get away with not installing that new component as you did?

    • @5MinuteFixit
      @5MinuteFixit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If its the small metal arc or loop piece you can get away with not installing it, that piece is made to make contact with the brake rotor when the pad is worn and needing replacement. It is not an essential part but is handy for indicating when your brake pad needs replacing. If you routinely give your vehicle a good look over you would probably notice your brake pads getting low. Thank you for watching, please give this video a thumbs up and consider subscribing if it was helpful! Thank you!
