I think their is almost unanimous agreement that our education system is broken Systems, although an abstract concept, actually seem to often abide by the laws of physics. When a corporation or a government gets too large, its large mass makes it difficult to redirect it from the path in which it is already moving. Large systems are resistant to all but the largest forces of change. This is because it is weighed down by too many laws, regulations, levels of management, etc. Demand local gov.

I talked her out of it. To this day I have never been more proud of him and the decision he made that day. That decision got him in trouble through zero tolerance, but he should really be rewarded for it. That's 1 reason why zero tolerance is wrong, the bullies get a slap on the wrist for beating kids up, while he gets punished for saving a kids life. I'm proud of what he did that day.

So a school punished someone who was A: Completely sober, hadn't even touched alcohol, and B: Only there to be a designated driver? Remind me to never enroll a kid there.
Let's just punish people for being safe, sounds like a great idea!

I got suspended, along with 10 or so other students, for associating with someone that picked on a girl. Associating with, not actually bullying. It cleared things up when we found out the "victims" parents regularly donated large amounts of money to the school. Private school is the biggest waste of money I have yet to see.

My college campus has a policy that if a friend or yourself have serious symptoms that might indicate alcohol poisoning you can seek help from officials and not get in trouble for underage drinking at all. They really try to promote safety as the number one priority, they are aware the underage drinking does occur and they do not want students to be afraid of getting punished especially when it comes to someone's health or even life at risk.

As a senior I'm high-school and having attended public school for the past 10 years I defined the whole system corrupt. Rewarding the bad kids when they finally do something good and putting the ones that actually want an education and want to work hard at a disadvantage because they aren't getting the attention they need. Having said this, I'm not saying we shouldn't encourage those said bad kids to not get an education but we should focus on those who WANT to be in the FREE position.

In all seriousness though, an old supervisor of mine had a saying, "responsibly irresponsible." It's the idea that a person takes all sorts of precautions and make good decisions (the friend calling for a ride rather than driving, the girl picking them up) WHICH IS GOOD! But, are only a direct result of an earlier choice they made that was irresponsible. Drunk friend has a lot to apologize for.

When my friend was younger, she got expelled for bringing a friend's inhaler to school because she left it at at sleepover. She was in 6th grade and got expelled for bringing an inhaler. The reason they used to expel her was: Illegal distribution of drugs. School sucks.

I absolutely %100 hate public high school education. I'm a junior in high school, and it feels like the staff think everyone is a round peg, meant to fit into their 'flawless' ideologies about how people should learn. It's awful, I can't do it anymore. If I weren't trying to go to a university, I'd just drop out.

It's ridiculous that the school would do that especially since here in the UK you are ASKED that if your friend is drunk you stay with them and help them, and are told you won't get in trouble for doing it because it is the right thing to do. Total disgrace.

My university has a rule that if your helping someone, like an underage drunk student get safely home or to a hospital, you won't get into trouble. They would rather have people actually helping their classmates than be worried about getting in trouble themselves.

The problem with this is the school is not punishing her because she was near alcohol but because her friend got drunk. They choose to punish her because of her associations. Now imagine she didn't go and pick up her friend and something bad happens she still gets in trouble. True friends will always be there for you.

My little brother has a friend, (this friend of his is emotionally abused by his parents all the time) and last year in middle school his friend decided he did not want to live anymore in the middle of class and ran outside to jump into oncoming traffic on the highway right out front. Without hesitation my brother leaped into action and saved him from making, what could have been his last choice. He got 2 weeks of in school suspension, and our mom was going to ground him

I live in CO. A friend of mine, an AP student with no "bad kid" history, was expelled the day his car was searched (because of another, significantly dumber friend who brought pot brownies to school and also got expelled) and the deans found a hunting knife in his car. He had no idea it was there; turns out his dad had cleaned the car out a few days before and left it there on accident. He was expelled without any hearing because of the school's no tolerance policy.

From someone who is actually a NAHS student (grade 11, I know Erin personally), we all think is bull shit. She was trying to help a friend and she worked hard for her captaincy but she gets it taken away for a bs reason. That being said, 2 things. 1, this is the 3rd time NA has made national news (pot brownies, Fat letters, wrestling coach sex offender), and secondly, STOP SENDING THE TEACHERS HATE MAIL!!!! That is just wrong. The problem is the system, not the teachers

I'm 19. People my age will always find a way to get alcohol! The point is that the girl was RESPONSIBLE and did not let her friend drive home drunk. She was not participating in the illegal consumption of alcohol but merely the only one acting like an adult. If the school wanted to make a statement for their policy they have the kids who WERE drinking. Id rather have the girl drive these people home than hear about another fatal drunk driving car accident.

can't believe someone who would try to pick up a friend from a party and try to help them out is getting punished like that. it's not like she's encouraging partying and drinking alcohol by doing this, and it's not like she was partaking. i don't understand why she's being punished.

  • @SolveigRobin
    @SolveigRobin 11 ปีที่แล้ว

here are my 2 cents: her friend was probably gonna get drunk anyway, so even if said student was dead against alcohol, her friend was probably not gonna listen. so she did what any responsible adult would have done and made sure that the situation would get worse, i.e. her friend driving home drunk, or worse, someone at the party abuse her friend's drunken state. we want kids to be responsible, let's not punish them when they are.

Guys, please thumbs this up so people can see
I'm from a town boardering where she goes to school. I know people who know her. She was at the party and she was drinking. Multiple sources (all over my Facebook) have said that she was at the party the entire night not just picking up a friend, and the team had rules against going to parties with alcohol. She broke this rule. Everyone at the party is being punished such as the chorus leader who lost his role as lead. That's the truth I promise.

One of the biggest problems is that teachers are treated like lords by students and if you challenge them then you are in the wrong. We are brought up to respect our elders but when so often there is no respect going the other way. My favorite teacher of all time is some one who understands a students beliefs and problems and does not give them pointless homework and wants to be challenged. He treats the students like adults and like he speaks to us like adults and doesn't insult our intelligenc

We should be praising Erin for doing the right thing in helping her friend. Would we rather have said friend try to drive home drunk? Get a ride with a stranger? Get in a car with someone else who was drunk? We should be teaching our kids while perhaps you shouldn't go to parties and drink in highschool, be responsible. And if you're put into a situation, ask for help. This friend asked for help and Erin did the responsible thing in helping her, yet we're punishing her for doing the right thing?

One thing I've learned in school is that they don't care about student's ideals, because it doesn't matter until they're 18 (since they haven't learned everything yet to make the "best" judgement).
There are also some people who are more respected than others still regardless of ideals. For instance, my friend Zach & I made a random humorous contract for fun that included things like "we own your soul" "if you don't agree we can hurt you, if you like to be hurt we have people who can help you"--

Wow, my high school had a student run program to give drunk students rides home on weekends. You'd call a number that was basically the equivalent of a taxi dispatch and a sober volunteer would pick you up from a party and drive you home, for free. It wasn't school sanctioned, but they supported it through morning announcements and stuff.

The thing that I hate about the school system in America is that being a teacher is firstly not a very prestigious job, and secondly not a high paying job. Good teachers work unbelievably hard to constantly grade assignments, formulate lesson plans, and actually teach. Teachers make a median of about 56k annually. If you have seen how hard a dedicated teacher works, you would know that they deserve more in compensation.

After a stabbing, my school adopted a zero-tolerance policy against knives. One of my friends was going on a weekend camping trip after school, so he had his hiking backpack in his car. The school's police officers received a tip that he had a knife in his backpack, so when asked about it, he calmly replied,"Yes, I do. But not in this one, in my hiking backpack in my car." So the officers forced him to take his pack out of his trunk, to go though it until he found the knife, then expelled him.

My hometown (in NJ, USA) is in the news right now actually: any time the police were involved with a student, they sent a copy of the report to the school, who would then additionally discipline them (detention, suspension, expulsion) & immediately suspend the students from games/days of extracurriculars or kicking them off their team/activity entirely. It's going to court now... but not even for the (illegal) discipline, for the fact that the police couldn't legally give the school the reports.

I am sorry, but I don't care what your zero tolerance is. In the school I am currently at for my post secondary education, it is also a tech school so we have highschoolers here. A police officer came in and told us a story about a girl that drunk-drove home and she got in a wreck. He said he held her head up as she said her last words that her parents call him to ask each year. He even told us specifically to help if the situation arises but not to get into the situation in the first place.

Zero tolerance policies/activity policies are beyond ridiculous. When I was in high school we had to sign off on a policy that stated we would be suspensed from extra curricular activities if we drank/smoked/did drugs. Anytime/anywhere. Including with parents consent, out of the country, etc. This came about because they attempted to suspend 18yr old students the prior year for drinking in Mexico on spring break.

There is literally not enough character space to specify why our schools are being messed up. . . but I'll try. . it's like putting everyone in a box and then expecting each one to fit in it and if one person calls you out on this cramped and unpleasant space they get called out and punished. I could go on with the box metaphor but I think that's a quick summary.

So basically she got punished for trying to help a friend. In the end that was what happened even if they were only punishing her because they thought she was drinking alcohol. She was not and was wrongly punished for being on the scene to pick up a friend to bring them home.

My old highschool had a no tolerance policy as well that extended into violence (along with drugs and alcohol). It was written in the school policy that, if Student A were to physically assault Student B, and even if Student B did nothing and took the beating, Student B would still be suspended with Student A for "being an involved party in the violent act". Yes, it's hard to adapt punishments to a case by case basis, but Elliott is right, flat punishments zero tolerance brings are detrimental

One thing that I will never quite understand as a European student is the way American punishing system in school works.
You have a certain amount of "bad" kids, when they do something, they get suspended. Taking into account that they are "bad" kids, they most likely don't want to be in school either way.
In Europe we punish, we call the parents, if parents don't react and that keeps on happening we get the social services.

So, the girl got punished because she helped her friend get home safely? She should be praised along with her friend for making a good decision. Also, if you put out "zero tolerance" policies, people are just going to disobey them. They should have consequences if the person in question is under age, but otherwise there should be limits, but not a zero tolerance policy. In addition, why was the girl who helped her friend punished, if she was sober...

so basically she got in trouble for not drinking and helping out a friend who was drinking, and schools always say if you are going to drink don't drive home call a friend, so we can get that friend in trouble too. this is why i hated high school.

No Child Left Behind, worst law ever put into existence. It makes the kids who try hard in school suffer because of the kids that don't care. Stupidity is one thing, blatant waste of resources (i.e teacher and time) for students that don't truly care is a crime. Let them fall behind not only because of the over-used statement "we need fast food workers too", but because these resources can be put to better use.

"No tolerance" actually means "guilty until proven innocent" with the less known hidden meaning of "guilty, whether you're innocent or not" (because why would we want our school systems to adhere to logic and fairness? That would just prove to society that they have more brains than the young adults we entrust them to educate for us. Who the hell wants that? Hint: everybody.

I hate it when I comment on the internet and people are all, "NOOOO! You can't have an opinion that differs from mine!"
