Followed your advise and the spray arrived yesterday. Took apart the amp and the tape deck. Sprayed in the areas you advised and all other conection points/leads etc. My 80's sound deck (expensive at the time) is like new again. Absolutely amazing. Super thanks 😊 🙏
I actually did this on a car amplifier. It only reproduced sound through one speaker whenever I touched the HPF/LPF buttons. Disconnected the amp from car battery, bought and sprayed some contact cleaner, let it dry, reconnected the amp and guess what, the problems with my filters are all gone. Speakers work correctly now. Thank you so much for this wonderful idea!
Great video. That's the way to clean those pesky knobs. I did the same with my Peavy tube amplifier. Unfortunately there were no holes after all. So I drilled very carefully tiny holes into them. That solved the problem just like you showed. And I was then able to sell the amplifier. Rock hard.
Amazing advice. I picked up this Johnson 35amp, that sounded absolutely terrible and crackling. In fact, my kids are saying the amp is blown. Couple is sprays of CRC contact spray electronic cleaner, and it sounds smooth and new! Thanks a million!
An excellent and easy fix....unfortunatrly 10 minutes too late, I just ordered a new fender amp.. But I cleaned out a little old scratchy amp what I now use for my e-drums and plugged the sg into it and it sounded awesome again. I'm gonna try and fix the Marshall amp next... But refuse to cancel my new amp... Great video fella.
Wow thanks for this. I knew this was causing the crackle as was told 30 or 40 years ago, but never new how to fix it. I assumed you need to buy new ones or even take them apart to clean. Will try the spray technique 👌
Thanks. For posting. I didn't have any of that contact spray. But I did have rubbing alcohol. I put it in a spray bottle and it worked. Took that annoying popping crackling sound away. I only paid $10 for a cheap used amp , I wasn't really worried about breaking it, as it sounded like crap to begin with.
I did my park amp with wd 40 as the pots had tiny pieces of powdery metal inside them,i removed the pots 1 by 1 so they dont get mixed up & then removed the cap on the back of the pot as its easier to get the gunk out & wipe the excess & then allow any remaining residue to evaporate :)
Before WD40 era [in Poland] - we used to use some cheap deodorant spray it directly under the knob [try to find best angle], no need to disassemble the whole thing. It worked like a dream.
Well then those folks failed to collect their reward at the end - the unassaillable opener to Highway To Hell! Keep on ROCKIN.....regards from bonnie Scotland, by the way!
HI Bike Guy - It seems really obvious -But sometimes it takes someone to state the obvious for you - So thanks for your help - My MarkBass Amp works a treat now - Great Job!!
Thanks again RJ. It's usually your bike vids that I watch but I recently acquired a nice Onkyo stereo from the 70's and ALL the pots have issues. I am hoping that this is going to remedy that :) 🎶
I can’t get into the one pot I need to get to bc it’s a double knob- it’s oxidized and I know that’s what it is- the other bass and treble knobs are perfectly fine.
hI GREAT VIDEO I HAVE A LEEM GA-820R AMPLIFIER which i have for 9 year keeps couting out i did i did apply wd 40 spray on the controls and it worked thanks again Rone.
Hi, I’m new to your channel and thought maybe you could give me some advice. I have what I believe is a 94 Klein bike. I think the model number says it’s a 20 inch L or something. The issue is, when I was about 8 or so (16 now) I used the bike to get to school everyday and my derailer for the sprockets by the pedals was always getting my chain stuck and everything on the bike was old and crappy (found it on the side of the road and my dad welded the front shock) so I just ripped off the derailer so I could ride it. Now I want to replace everything regarding the shifters, derailers, maybe even sprockets to be better for mountain biking and so it actually works. My only issue is I have no idea how I would choose which ones work for my bike. Got any tips? Also some new front forks/shocks. Sorry if my terminology is iffy. If I had to choose I’d say it’s maybe a pulse or attitude model.
Sadly my amplifier pots don't look anything like that on the back, it's a square with some tiny holes and not this circle with the entrance where you can spray the contact cleaner...
You and me seem to have some things in common.... we work on our bikes, we like bikes, we like to ride bikes, we like to understand how things work, we like to fix things and we play guitar.
RJ, how do I fit a tire on an old rim? I have a 700c tire and a 700c wheel from an old Raleigh and it seems like the rim is just a bit bigger than it should be so when I inflate the tire it has a spot where it goes in towards the center of the wheel.
please help! i just went in and cleaned my pots and afterwards while putting the volume knod , treble, bass, etc...back on, the treble and bass knobs seemed to have popped up just a little bit and now will turn right or left infinately. curious if i need to tighten something? any help would be much appreciated!
Spraying contact cleaner into graphite pots is an absolute common unqualified mistake. Of course the pots spin more freely, you dissolved the grease inside, and the spray will eventually burn the graphite pots, it's just a matter of time.
I assume you mean the original wd-40. Wd-40 brand also make an electrical contact cleaner. I used it to clean a gummed up button sensor inside my neato robot vaccum (probably more sensitive electrical componentry than a guitar amplifier) and have not had an issue with it since. Whatever you use should be made for the job and let it dry fully.. You don't want to short circuit
Some contact cleaners are made for metal to metal contact like in switches. They may not be optimal for potentiometers. The stuff I used is made for pots. Contact the WD-40 manufacturer, and ask them.
...AC/DC....?..try some Radiohead RJ,..thanks for this video, now i can fix my Marshall, its been doing this for a long time...never knew how to do this,..now i do!..stoked!!
RJ The Bike Guy well yeah actually I do care about my equipment that’s why I asked you for your opinion on the best cleaner for my amp, but it seems your not intelligent enough to answer in a adult fashion are you? I asked an electrician at work if WD40 would work and he kindly gave me the correct material in which to carry out my task, therefore answering my question in adult way, which is more than you did. Furthermore I watched all of your video and even gave you a like.
unplugging the amp is not enough!! There might still be charged capacitors inside that can kill you!! be careful, don't do anything that you're not absolutely sure about

Remind me of my old man, God bless him, a man of many talents... 👍
I had this as my very first amp when I was given a guitar for Christmas like 20 years ago!! Have never seen another one until today!
many thanks to you bro, you saved my amp from being thrown away, i thought it is all broken and irreparable, easy way to fix this
I've been meaning to do the pots in my old Technics radio-amp for the last six years. Hopefully this video is the motivation I need.
Amazing advice. I picked up this Johnson 35amp, that sounded absolutely terrible and crackling. In fact, my kids are saying the amp is blown. Couple is sprays of CRC contact spray electronic cleaner, and it sounds smooth and new! Thanks a million!
I am also a cyclist and guitarist!! You're like the perfect channel for me!
I also followed your efforts and used WD-40 lubricant spray and it worked a treat. thanks heaps

Great video fella.
I used to have to do this on my Peavey Backstage Plus every couple years.
I just sprayed it right through the front of the knob after removing the knob and the nut. Took about a minute. Worked pefectly
Dude, I did exactly as you said! My 30 year-old Roland DAC-15 is workable again. Thanks!
Anything from RJ is inspiring and informative great job !!!
I went to the closed radio shack and asked for a ‘Pochemichomiter’ spray. The guy that wasn’t there just stared at me. 😂 thanks for the tip man!!
Wow thanks for this. I knew this was causing the crackle as was told 30 or 40 years ago, but never new how to fix it. I assumed you need to buy new ones or even take them apart to clean. Will try the spray technique 👌
Indeed! During the 80’s I was told “dust in the pots” - but not the essential next step!!
I’m wondering if WD40 will fix this, as it seems to fix just about anything, or is it “too hard/ too heavy”??
If you are trying this on a tube amp, wait a few hours before fiddling around at the back as those capacitors can store lethal amounts of charge...
Yeah, I know a TV repair guy who took a hit from a charged capacitor. It was the biggest belt he'd ever experienced.
Thanks you brother.. liked.. will isopropyl alcohol or regular WD40 work? I don't have a contact cleaner at hand.
Very thoughtful and generous of you to share this.
Thank you for sharing this info.I have a markbass head doing this and it’s only three years old if that. This will save us so much money if it works.
Thanks. For posting. I didn't have any of that contact spray. But I did have rubbing alcohol. I put it in a spray bottle and it worked. Took that annoying popping crackling sound away. Still might be worthwhile buying a can of contact spray. Nice to have around and does a better job.
Wow, that those sounds have annoyed me all my life. I never knew they were so easy to fix.
Good to know... I have a 1968 Fender Bassman Amp that could use a cleaning
if you don't have cleaner, you can also rotate the knobs a few thousands times and that can knock off a lot of the crud
Regular WD-40? Not a good choice for the longevity of your controls.
@@RJTheBikeGuy it was all i had @ the time :(
Before WD40 era [in Poland] - we used to use some cheap deodorant spray it directly under the knob [try to find best angle], no need to disassemble the whole thing. It worked like a dream.
An actual control cleaner made for the purpose would probably work better and be better for the longevity of the device.
What is the tool to force the lube down you referenced? TIA!
AC/DC from the bike guy!?!? RJ - you are THE dude! I'm thinking a whole new youtube channel....
Congrats on making it to the end of the video! I don't think too many people did. LOL
Well then those folks failed to collect their reward at the end - the unassaillable opener to Highway To Hell! Keep on ROCKIN.....regards from bonnie Scotland, by the way!
Wow Awesome if i would have seen this video years ago i probably would have saved thousands of dollars . thank you for sharing
Mr. RJ the Technical Guy!😊
HI Bike Guy - It seems really obvious -But sometimes it takes someone to state the obvious for you - So thanks for your help - My MarkBass Amp works a treat now - Great Job!!
What about input jacks?
Hi i have a Motion Sound amp and I'm getting crackling sound when turning the knobs. Can I use WD40?
Thank you
Big fan of your channel and also from Rochester, NY... how come you don’t have any videos on removing rust from bikes?
Is there anything RJ can't do ?
There's a little thingamabob that changes the whatchamacallit so that the doodad gets uppity-buppity or downdy-woundy.
Worked perfectly, THANKS!
One more guitarist here. What is happening with the Peugeot? It’s really similar to my same-era Fuji.
Thanks again RJ. It's usually your bike vids that I watch but I recently acquired a nice Onkyo stereo from the 70's and ALL the pots have issues. I am hoping that this is going to remedy that :) 🎶
Oh man this is the perfect video. I’m an older dude and all my stuff is like that
I can’t get into the one pot I need to get to bc it’s a double knob- it’s oxidized and I know that’s what it is- the other bass and treble knobs are perfectly fine.
Really helpful thanks
i use this stuff all the time i have fixed many electronic devices with it.
"Yeah but these go to Eleven"
I saw them in concert in 1992. :D
Nice...
hI GREAT VIDEO I HAVE A LEEM GA-820R AMPLIFIER which i have for 9 year keeps couting out i did i did apply wd 40 spray on the controls and it worked thanks again Rone.
I recommend a real contact cleaner.
How to fix the power button?
It works. Thank you

RJ, how do I fit a tire on an old rim?
I have a 700c tire and a 700c wheel from an old Raleigh and it seems like the rim is just a bit bigger than it should be so when I inflate the tire it has a spot where it goes in towards the center of the wheel.
Trying wetting the bead of the tire with soapy water before inflating it. That sometimes helps.
CCl4 will do it.
Cool tip. Thanks much.

Sorry, I can't tell you without working on it.
Hey rj, what should i do if the gain knob cut out the amp when i rotate the knob?
Same thing.
You saved my marriage!
kidding. But you saved me a lot of money on my amp. I appreciate it
Spraying contact cleaner into graphite pots is an absolute common unqualified mistake. Of course the pots spin more freely, you dissolved the grease inside, and the spray will eventually burn the graphite pots, it's just a matter of time.
This is not contact cleaner. It's control cleaner. It's made for pots. It contains a lubricant.
@@RJTheBikeGuy kudos! then, nice job.
Tank you!,.. i have the same problem ,.. now i know how to fix iT 👩🏼🎤🙋🏼♀️
Would WD-40 work too?
It could, but do you really want to spray kerosene into an amp?
Or...you can get a product actually made for the task.
Well i just tried. It ended up working great on my cassette player switches, they fully work now!
I assume you mean the original wd-40. Wd-40 brand also make an electrical contact cleaner. god I loved that outro I hoped he would play it
I was much better 30 years ago when I was playing all the time.
2nd hight light plz love your vids
???
Nice.... but how come you didn't clean that cabinet? it looks so disgusting...
To show exactly how I got it.
I understand. But once you showed it to us, I’d be curious how it cleaned up.
That s the first amp I had
...AC/DC....?..try some Radiohead RJ,..thanks for this video, now i can fix my Marshall, its been doing this for a long time...never knew how to do this,..now i do!..stoked!!
I have never really gotten into Radiohead. Working on some Sammy Hagar stuff. May try some Jackyl.
..Jackyl...screwdriver,would suit you,lol..
pull em off spray contact cleaner done
im scared to do this on my Dr.Z amp. fck it, im gona try
Will WD40 work??
Why do you think it would? Because it comes in a spray can?
@@RJTheBikeGuy what? I am just asking if WD40 does the same job as contact spray, as i have WD40 and not contact spray. So why the attitude???
No answer then....
Use control cleaner if you actually care about your frigging equipment.

You can take a shower with that amount of spray :P
This is not a bicycle
What gave it away?
it must be the color
Oh I didn't notice, good spot mate!
RJ - dude?? You should play Tool!! Lol
Tool - because you could always use more.
So would this one called RJ the guitar Guy lol
Are you an engineer?
I am not an engineer. But I did take a couple years of electronics classes in school. I actually work with computers.
RJ The Bike Guy Cool! Love your videos, keep up the good work!
Maybe we could see you play guitar music
"Yeah I do other stuff besides bikes"
I thought I recognised your voice
Hey I'm selling a 1993 cannondale m500 that's in good condition
DO NOT TRY THIS WITH A TUBE AMP EVER, TUBE AMPS HOLD RESIDUAL POWER SO TOUCH THE WRONG SPOT ONCE AND YOUR GONNA GET A NASTY SHOCK
And by nasty I mean fatal
Alcohol would work or disc brake cleaner lol. Its as easier to replace the pots half the time.
Why don't you just say 'i'm going to' instead of 'i'm going to go ahead and'? It's not like someone is stopping you....
I just throw a shoe out the window at them..... Oh sorry I thought it said "how to fix noisy crackhead knobs" my bad 😇
