Modern Vintage Gamer Why didn't they make the adapter with the console in it? They can also add GameBoy and GameBoy advance slots to play them. With all the Roms integrated, all they need to do is use a USB inside.
I'm not sure if it's just me but I've noticed that you actually sound at a pretty good volume, which makes me believe you take the time to master your sound, something many channels do not do and can sometimes sound not as loud as they could. Awesome! :)
Really don't know too much about the PC Engine but decided to give this a watch, this thing is awesome. Definitely jam packed with features that set it beyond it simply being another flashcart. Great review, dude!
Does this work and fit on the North American Turbografx 16 expansion slot without modifying the plastic cosole casing? I have a complete in box TG-16 and I play it. I want to keep everything stock for collection purposes.
It is also important to get true RGB out. All of the research I've done says you have to internally mod the system's RGB and SYNC signals. But on the other hand this product and others like the db-Electronics grafx booster claim to produce true RGB video without internal mods. I have the skills and willingness to do the internal mod, just not to my stock, in box TG-16. I'd sooner buy the PCE if I can't have my cake and eat it too!
Make sure you check out Rainbow Islands CD version. Easily the best home version of the game ever made and has the right music. I do think this is terribly overpriced though. Not having to buy the CDs is just pirating, you aren't actually saving any money. The original CDs are not copyprotected anyway and so you can simply BURN them!
Got one of these last year and I've been tremendously pleased with it. Everyone who's even remotely interested in the PCE needs to buy one of these babies stat!

Beautiful design, that original Japanese version of the PC-Engine CD rom combo was so much sexier than the U.S. TurboGrapx one with its akward T shape.
I always wanted something similar for the Sega genesis, an sd card reader add-on that can let you play Sega CD and Sega 32x games without the extra hardware attachments
You'd need two devices for that I'm pretty sure. I'm guessing the 32X would be really hard to replicate. Would need a couple CPUs/CPU cores on a FPGA. Same sort of thing for the Sega CD.
It threw me off when I heard you say the PC Engine was released in 1997, lol -- a simple error but it made me do a double take on wiki to make sure my mind wasn't going! Still one of my fav consoles to date! I'm hoping TerraOnion makes a shell for the US model!
I retracted my Like on this video. As some know TerraOnion's Alex harasses competitors and as krikzz's country was being bombed/invaded by Russia, he chose to troll him, imply he was a cowardly draft-dodger for trying to get himself/his family out of Ukraine, also accused him of being a tax cheat to keep prices low (so Alex can justify his own higher prices to customers). Long story short, I'd never buy a TO product, and luckily will instead choose the Analogue Duo over this solution!
That would have risen the already steep price even further. Especially if they had used a quality upscaler that properly upscales such a low resolution.
I remember catching the TurboGraFx at my local Mall's game shop somewhere around late 89 - 90'. There were a couple of Kiosks, where i got to play Bonk's Adventure, while Keith Courage was on display in the stores main showcase with all of the Turbo Accessories. I remember seeing Samurai 'mode' Keith roaming around on a CRT and my jaw almost hit the floor. The colors and visuals for Bonk were defnitely impressive after being so accustomed to the NES too. 89, was amazing time to be alive! :D Yet, the lack of a 2nd controller port, no Composite/AV port(They made us fork over more money for adapters which was pure BS) poor CD case Box Art, lame UCard logo-only sticker art, and poor commercial adverts. The controller looked cool, but the NA console design was a bit of a mixed bag. Plus there didn't seem to be an real support from some of the key players like Capcom or Konami. They completely butchered the TurboGraFx in NA. lol Anyways, thinking about getting a PC Engine(White) + PC Engine CD paired with the Interface Unit. Looks awesome aesthetically, plus you get composite cable support.
The people who think this item is too expensive are simply nuts... It would cost more to just buy a PC Engine Duo system, or one of the myriad number of CD games that hundreds of dollars. So with this item, all you need is a PC Engine console (base, Core Grafx I or II, TG16) and now you can play: 1. Every single HuCard game 2. Every single CD game 3. Every single Super Grafx game (if you have the console) 4. All arcade CD games PLUS: RGB and component video support without modding your console. If you can't afford the price, that's understandable. But don't say the item is overpriced, because it provides a stunning amount of content and features for the price. Yes, I may have a couple complaints, but they are overall quite negligible and can be addressed with a future firmware patch. This has been one of the best additions to my videogame collection, and now I have unlocked the full potential of my PC Engine and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite consoles of all time.
You will spend about the same or more if you dont have the PC-engine/Tg-16 system. might be cheaper to get a PC-Engine Duo-R already RGB modded and Recapped. no copy protection, so you can Burn games. and get an everdrive for $75. out of all the CD based games, maybe 30 are even worth playing. This thing is awesome dont get me wrong, you are right about people complaining about price.
Hello kyle, You are right about a number of things, but one more aspect I forgot to mention is the convenience factor. Since you can get the BIOs for all the system cards (and the arcade card is built in already) that is one thing that makes it easier, plus having all your CD bin/cue files on a single microSD card instead of hundreds of CDs. There is also the reliability factor, many Duo-R's have failing CD drives at this point, and while fixable, it is not always a cheap process. So there is much less of a headache with just getting an SSDS3.
@@timg555 I guess everdrive and all those flash carts are just emulating too Not like physical hardware ever made a difference in performance of a game... /s
Reverse polarity is a class 1, 2, and 3 defect per IPC, so you were right to point that out. Granted those are tantalum caps and don't pop like electrolytic caps, but a defect is a defect and that'll still kill the cap. IDK why I watched this though. I don't even have a PC engine, but now I kinda want one 😂
By brother had one,. I only owned computers, but played all consoles my brother had. He had Sega Master, Mega Drive, SNES, but PC Engine i remembered to be far ahead of its time. He got it after the Master System and it was such a great step ahead.
I used to use an emulator called Magic Engine to play games to reduce the use of my original pce cards and CDs. Show Blazing Lazers or Legendary Axe 1 and 2, Silent Debuggers, there are soo many ;) Great old school video BTW! I have a LOT of memories with that console.
300 seems like alot but think of the savings of not having to purchase original games that can cost as much as the system alone! Rgb output plus access to the entire pc engine library! I think its worth it!
I love this stuff. I got one and Im in love with it. Now theres a new one that also allowes you using the SuperGrafx games, the 12 of them, has a NES builtin emulator and provides HDMI
I'm fairly certain that reversed capacitor only affects the composite video decoder. The RGB decoder doesn't on the other hand so by using either a SCART or Jp-21 cable you effectively bypass that module. Good info for anyone with older revs that don't want to muck about with soldering.
thanks for the tip! i see alot of people complain about price.. but i had planed to buy a duo-r or RX system from japan to play both cards and cds and that would cost pretty much the same and wouldnt have all the games.. so buying this will actually save me alot of money compared to buying all the original hardware and games ive had my eyes on.. so im buying one!
The TG16 did poorly in the US because they simply did not advertise outside of large markets (the same strategy they used in Japan). I had no idea the TG16 existed when growing up until one day randomly going into Toy's R Us. This was around the time Sonic 2 had just been released and I remember playing Air Zonk and never EVER forgetting that game. If I bought a TG16, Air Zonk would be the first game I'd buy.
Oh man. I used to lust after the PC Engine as a kid. I remember at school pouring over games magazines, looking at the lovely colourful sprites. I wanted one so bad and they were stupidly expensive (for a schoolkid). Now I have the disposable income, the price has gone back up again :D. One day :)
I had the TurboGrafx 16 handheld system with color TV. It's crazy how people are revisiting the games... that was my reality as a kid and it was top of the market gaming system, lol.
Nice to know some history about this machine. But personally I rather stick with emulation for older consoles with Retropie on a Raspberry Pi 3. Not only for the huge difference in pricing but also because the lack of space for every console ever released on my shelves. I will agree that playing games on the original vintage hardware with even a old television gives the best experience but emulation gives a great experience as well. I do always try to look for USB replica's of the controllers to get as close to the original experience as possible with only one computer for emulation.
yeah that was my first thought....why go through all this to do almost the same thing with emulation using filters? Just seems like a giant waste of space and money. I mean they are emulating some games on the original hardware....seems pretty dumb.
+ Snuggly Jeff They arent emulating games on original hardware but converting them, the differece is big. Ofcourse I am into emulators also because they get the job done almost perfect,I dont support original hardware-software,I would only if I was rich.
+Snuggly Jeff The difference between convert and emulate is really big,2 different things. I wont do the teacher here explaining technical stuff but you have to make a better research
U can get one on Ebay from Japan for $200 atm. I'm thinking of investing. The games are more expensive than 2nd hand other retro games but brand new ps4 or Switch games are around the same price.
Again, an excellent and interesting video ! For me too, the PC Engine take a special place in my heart : i was one of the first to buy one here, in France, in late 80s (and i began to code an emulator ^_^ ) However, the price for this device is too high for me, perhaps around 200$, i would think about it :)
I was thinking this might be cool till I heard the $300 price tag, I think I'll just stick to emulation when it comes to the PC Engine/TG-16 at these prices, as even a decent modern Android phone can emulate the PCE/TG-16 with little issue.
wow its cool to see things like this,my dad actually owns a turbographx 16 andd from time to time he pulls it out and we usuually end up playing r type and some game where your a ninja or a samurai,i cant really remeber the name right now lol but seeing this reminds me of my childhood :)
so, I was really psyched about this thing and decided to go look at ordering one. ... 240 euros @_@ good lord no thanks! ill keep using my PC to emulate the games! lol
yeah I'm not getting the point of this when you can emulate. The only reason for having the console would be for collectors, but this method still doesn't have you collecting the games... It's just $300 emulation...
Ryan Story Emulation is great and all, but for nostalgia, original hardware does add to the experience. I got an Amiga 1200/30 with whdload. No fussing about with floppies, but still close enough to what I grew up with to tickle the nostalgia bone in all the right places.
That why I got a Mega Drive again (the games I still had). Emulation simply doesn't give me the same vibe. Now I'm only missing a CRT. I'm still wondering if I should get a Mega CD but I never owned one so it might be enough to emulate it with my laptop and connecting a CRT Monitor via VGA plus getting a Mega Drive style USB controller. I always liked the look of the TurboDuo and would prefer to get one of them. And a Sharp X68000 in black... And a Wondermega model 1... *dream* The Amiga would be also interesting as I only played a friend's Amiga 500 and went from C64 directly to PC (not counting consoles). I don't miss the C64's floppy flipping though as playing Ultima 6 was a pain.
MVG, I agree I would like to see device sell for a lower price point. I have been looking at collecting for the PC Engine for a while now and this device is packed with a ton of features that would make collecting for the system much easier. Great video, keep the content coming!!
This wil be so much better and last better than my pc engine duo with the physical moving cd drive, not to mention it has a lack or arcade cd game support without the hucard for that, and lack of turbo games support! Also I won't need my TG everdirve with this! Holy crap!
A PC Engine CD ROM drive will play back burned disks just fine. There's no protection. So you could have burned some of those expensive CD game images onto blank disks and played them that way if you wanted to.
Sure I get that (although I do have three PC Engine CD ROM drives here which all are still working fine so far), but in the video MVG says he's been waiting forever for the chance to play some of the expensive CD ROM games. Well, if you have a working CD ROM drive you never had to wait.
I think at this point you should just go with a Mister and play even more. Since you loading games from an SD card anyways and get a snac adapter for the controllers. The cost is starting to get high enough that for a little bit more you can get so much more.
It looks awesome, I realize is cheap in terms on comparison to buying the actual parts, as the cd rom 2 or the cards, but that happened cause the over priced (inflated) collectors price. Most people that will buy devices like this, are not into collecting, more into just playing and that is how the price doesnt fit the actual demand. What I mean is, people trying to buy a divece like this for a PC engine are all over the world, so if you live on US, Japan or Europe, 300 dollars could be expensive, but cause the currency change it will be not as expensive as if you live at South America (just to state one example). So, I think he will increase sellings a lot if he can found a way to keep the same product and reduce cost trying to reach half that price (150 dollars) SOmething closer to the average price of these kind of devices.
I love my SD System 3. I haven't had the audio buzz issue fixed yet, but it's really not that big of a deal to me. My only complaint is the clunky menu system. It's a bit weird.
Love your content and keep up the good work. Teeny nitpick, but it's Grafx as opposed to Graphx. Either way, it was a neat system, and though I never purchased one, they used to demo them at Radio Shack [RIP :( ] and I wasted my time (and the store clerks' patience) on Bonk more than I care to admit.
The fourth generation of gaming was great but I think the fifth generation etches it out slightly. I got a Core Grafx Mini last week and I can't stop playing it. I was a Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes kid growing up. I missed the Turbo Grafx 16 but not anymore!
If you live in California you will pay around $327.44 (includes conversion fee) + $9.82 of foreign transaction fee. Still, it is less expensive than getting a turbo duo. It’s okay that it does not play the supergrafx. To me, that’s the pc engine equivalent of the 32x.
after checking things a little more deeper the sgx seems to have something more than a ram expansion from stock pce (in the video department). still, since there are working sgx fpga cores around already, it might be possible to make 'em work. unless it's something impossible to manage from the pce expansion bay bus, that is
I wish this was out when I bought the Turbo EverDrive + Engine Block AV (TurboBooster), it released like i think within 6 months of me buying the other combo
If the transparent gray accessories that I forgot the name of has display out and SD card support then wouldn't it just be cheaper to have a cable go to USB and the program on your computer, I mean if I had a collection of consoles in my living room all set up I would probably have a media PC there as well. I'm not saying it's easier just said it's cheaper, and they're wondering what the benefits are for emulation, I mean you are already running an SD card so it's not really that big of a lead.
Out of curiosity, why aren't your videos 4k anymore? I was just wondering because that was one of the reasons that made you unique; well besides the fact you go in depth with underrated consoles and explain reasons how to modify them to such intriguing capabilities.
This is a great addon idea! But I must wonder if it's really worth the money at this point? I mean now you're just loading roms onto the console. So why not just go all the way and use an emulator? At that point you would get the lovely upscaling a framemiester can do and don't need to buy a console or addons if you choose not to. I have been pondering this as of late with several of my own consoles in my collection breaking down.
I don't have a PC Engine, but Im glad you said it works on Turbo Grafx 16. Probably gonna end up with one of these. Also, I dont see why not, but can you load roms with translation patches onto it?
Note: this device DOES work with a TurboGrafx16
How? they have different formfactors i thought...
I guess you remove the unit from the case and insert it into the back of the TG16.
Note : this device DOESN'T work on PC Engine DUO
so you can play your TurboGraphx16 games on this system? I love ninja spirit

Snuggly Jeff
They arent emulating games on original hardware but converting them, the differece is big.
Ofcourse I am into emulators also because they get the job done almost perfect,I dont support original hardware-software,I would only if I was rich.
Vasileios bullshit. Explain these huge differences.
+Snuggly Jeff
The difference between convert and emulate is really big,2 different things.
I wont do the teacher here explaining technical stuff but you have to make a better research
Vasileios basically you have no idea what you're talking about...got it
Your absence was noted. Great video as always.
thanks for the vid I was always interested in the PC engine
Great Review! The hd retrovision sega genesis 2 component cable works as well!
This device is awsome mate, thanks for sharing.
This is actually something I'd be interested in. Time to start savin' mah sheckles. :D
U can get one on Ebay from Japan for $200 atm. I'm thinking of investing. The games are more expensive than 2nd hand other retro games but brand new ps4 or Switch games are around the same price.
Again, an excellent and interesting video !
For me too, the PC Engine take a special place in my heart : i was one of the first to buy one here, in France, in late 80s (and i began to code an emulator ^_^ )
However, the price for this device is too high for me, perhaps around 200$, i would think about it :)
this looks fantastic on RGB!
@10:21 had no idea there was a R-Type complete CD!!
That things pretty cool man, really unlocks everything capable on the system. Price is a little steep though
I recognize that xm or mod audio playing in the video background. Nice!
Ninja Spirit. 😎
Also i wonder whether the "Hyperbased - Firefox & Tip" was influenced by "Cream of the Earth" from Romeo Knight. :)
Oh shit
I'm definitely considering getting a PC-Engine now
so, I was really psyched about this thing and decided to go look at ordering one.
...
240 euros
@_@ good lord no thanks! ill keep using my PC to emulate the games! lol
yeah I'm not getting the point of this when you can emulate.
30 bucks Raspberry Pi is sufficient, and you also get to play Aldynes.
noop9k there is that.
*dream*
The Amiga would be also interesting as I only played a friend's Amiga 500 and went from C64 directly to PC (not counting consoles). I don't miss the C64's floppy flipping though as playing Ultima 6 was a pain.
A regular RGB EXT-bus amp combined with a SD-HuCard will do, combined under 100 bucks.
This vid is a thing of beauty ❤️
Awesome video brotha!
Turned this one off when you got 1997 confused with 1987, then proceeded to say “it failed to compete with Sony & nintendo”
Mixing up the date, just numbers, would be one thing. But yeah, my man was in the wrong decade.
Very good because Prince is up!
I just found out about this and I agree. I just got a sega MG and terraonion sega cd fpg card. This PC Engine card is my next purchase.
Really cool. I’ve been wanting to play more on my Pc Engine but price has prohibited me from doing so.
Bonk, bomberman, splatter house.. those were my jams
MVG, I agree I would like to see device sell for a lower price point. I have been looking at collecting for the PC Engine for a while now and this device is packed with a ton of features that would make collecting for the system much easier. Great video, keep the content coming!!
Liked and subscribed and hit up the notification Bell. Great video.
$300 for something that looks like a game shark knock off.
Turbo Grafx16 was a great machine.
I used to have a TurboGrafx-CD, I miss those days.
This wil be so much better and last better than my pc engine duo with the physical moving cd drive, not to mention it has a lack or arcade cd game support without the hucard for that, and lack of turbo games support! Also I won't need my TG everdirve with this! Holy crap!
Amazing channel, subscribed. I love the PC Engine, but it's so expensive. Definitely waiting for this to get reverse engineered by the Chinamen!
Time for a PC-Engine mini.
@NTSCollector-J Plus, like all the other "minis", it would be simply an emulator, and a sucky one at that.
yes, it is, isnt it?
lol
2020 says hi and your welcome.
Nice review!
So, I think he will increase sellings a lot if he can found a way to keep the same product and reduce cost trying to reach half that price (150 dollars) SOmething closer to the average price of these kind of devices.
amazing in game soundtracks... !
STFU STUPID ASSHOLE
The fourth generation of gaming was great but I think the fifth generation etches it out slightly. I got a Core Grafx Mini last week and I can't stop playing it. I was a Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes kid growing up. I missed the Turbo Grafx 16 but not anymore!
If you live in California you will pay around $327.44 (includes conversion fee) + $9.82 of foreign transaction fee. Still, it is less expensive than getting a turbo duo. It’s okay that it does not play the supergrafx. To me, that’s the pc engine equivalent of the 32x.
You need to bring back blooper reels.
dayum, i love my pc-engine duo-r but this device is something else..!
i wonder if supergrafx games support can be added
great review
It supports the SuperGrafx games, if you're using it with a SuperGrafx.
after checking things a little more deeper the sgx seems to have something more than a ram expansion from stock pce (in the video department). still, since there are working sgx fpga cores around already, it might be possible to make 'em work. unless it's something impossible to manage from the pce expansion bay bus, that is
I wish this was out when I bought the Turbo EverDrive + Engine Block AV (TurboBooster), it released like i think within 6 months of me buying the other combo
Have you checked to see if it'll work with that genesis hdmi plug? That'd be a good way to bring it to new TVs
You should do a follow-up to the new model... 👍
2:55 mod.hyperbased by Firefox (and Tip)!
An absolute incredible device.
It would be nice if you could find the thing for sale anywhere. You make a great video and now i'm sold but it's nowhere to be found.
Bought mine off ebay. Came from Colombia bundled with a Super Grafx. Only way I could find it. Good luck. This thing is awesome!
Out of curiosity, why aren't your videos 4k anymore? I was just wondering because that was one of the reasons that made you unique; well besides the fact you go in depth with underrated consoles and explain reasons how to modify them to such intriguing capabilities.
when i am capturing gameplay, i prefer to render at 60fps, otherwise my videos will be 4k as usual
Modular + flash carts ... it came from the future that's for sure
I don't have a PC Engine, but Im glad you said it works on Turbo Grafx 16. Probably gonna end up with one of these.
Also, I dont see why not, but can you load roms with translation patches onto it?
Enjoyable video sir.
0:29 "It failed to compete with SONY and Nintendo". Sony wasn't in the game yet son
Sega, I'd say.
How about a update to cover if the few firmware issues were ironed out or not
Rondo of Blood had the most rocking soundtrack
great review
