When you started describing the seeding and harvest mechanisms, I thought "Oh, that sounds just like the Gates of Loyang," which is a game I've never played and was surprised I remembered from having watched this series. It just goes to show what an impact y'all have on teaching and spreading the love for board gaming.
I can definitely see how it seems too simple for my tastes these days, but it has really high table presence for the simplicity, which I think would make it a great family-weight or gateway game, like y'all said. I could see my family agreeing to play this with me, while with something like Agricola or Hallertau I can already see their eyes glazing over.

Hello from Iceland, thanks for the kind words! I prefer the actual Reykholt over the game itself (sounds like you guys went to the inspiration as well). We have way more lagoons today than we did in 2018 so there are more reasons to come back! In a game such as this, and like you describe it like a math puzzle, I particularly disliked the negative events in the event deck. After the 2nd play I removed all of the negative events from the deck since it does not make it more enjoyable.

Definitely looks like one of the least interesting Uwe games. But Iceland is very cool (no pun intended) - I've been there twice, once in Summer, and another in Winter.

What is the orange outlined box on the greenhouse cards? Does that mean anything?

I just watched this video while on vacation in Iceland, and we are on the way to the tomato farm right now, amazing timing 😊❤ not sure j ll get the game as it is a bit light for our taste, but great to see the places it was inspired by! Thank you for the playthrough!

I love Rosenberg games and just started really looking into this one this past weekend because I've been getting more interested in homesteading/small-scale gardening! I love the theme and the mechanics seem interesting as well! ☺ Love that you guys are working through the Uwe catalog like this! Thanks!

Probably Uwe's least regarded game. Even more than Mercator, I forgot it even existed until you mentioned it last time. I think the main problem for me is that Gates of Luoyang is similar to Reykholt but I don't see any circumstance where I would play the latter over the former. And Atiwa makes a better gateway game, I think.

What are the games on Monique's shirt? I see:
    Top-center: 7 Wonders
    Top-right: Trajan?
    Center (sailing ship): Keyflower?
    Center-right: Age of Steam?
    Bottom-left: The Estates?
    Bottom-center: Power Grid
    Bottom-right: Beyond the Sun?

I don't love this one either but I did end up playing it 18 times! Mostly solo thru the campaign but a decent amount at 2/3 players.
So, a mediocre Uwe for me still gave me 18 plays! I love Uwe!

i have a soft spot for this game. It was kind of billed as My First Uwe Rosenberg Game™️ ... and it was indeed my first Uwe Rosenberg game. After i'd played it for a while i wanted to try a "real" Uwe game and picked up Agricola. The rest is history. 😅
As you kind of mentioned at the end, it's best as an intro to Euro mechanics for new players who've never played a worker placement game before. When i worked in an office we used to play games at lunch, and when i brought this in people were pretty skeptical, but after a couple of plays they loved it and were asking me to bring it back. i actually think one thing that sells this to more casual gamers is how cutthroat the worker placement is; someone who's used to more take that casual games might "get" that more than a less interactive worker placement game.
Definitely not a gamer's game, and sure, i don't pull it out very much, but i have some really good memories with it. And as far as comparisons go, some people will grumble about this, but when i sat down to play Hallertau, i thought "oh, like Reykholt."

Are you thinking of Fridheimar farms? They have tomato plants stretched vertically and a restaurant and bar in the greenhouse itself, along with boxes of bees to pollinate. It also had a stable with the Icelandic horses on sight. I was fortunate enough to visit in 2021 and must agree that Iceland is a magical place!

  • @cjsmith914
    @cjsmith914 ปีที่แล้ว

I actually quite like this as something a bit simpler and find it a good way to get people into worker placement. Absolutely not the most depth and doesn’t get lots of plays, but I’m glad it’s in my collection!

  • @michaeljoyce7548

Strong Gates of Loyang vibes in this one, but simplified. I love this series, definitely found a few I've had to add to my collection and others I can skip.

That's definitely one thing I've noticed about Reykholt, at least in my plays it has been fairly close. Even new players are pretty surprised how many tables they are able to reach. I do enjoy this one, but it doesn't get to the table that often because of all the other gaming goodness out there.

    • @BeforeYouPlay

I have been on the fence about Reykholt, until today! I had forgotten about the game, but when I saw this playthrough, I decided to go ahead and purchase it. It's not the most exciting game, but I still think it's a good one to have. Having another Uwe game is always a bonus for me. Thanks for the great playthrough. You two are always very detailed in your teaches and fun to watch as well! Just curious Monique, with the two veggies off to the side, were those forgotten?

Reykholt was e REAL bummer for me.. Sold it after 1 (very hard to complete) playthrough🤷‍♂ It is just so very simplistic that it almost feels like a rip-off or a demo. Nothing new anywhere. Patchwork costs a third of the price and offers so much more depth.. Robin of Locksley is the completely underrated brother of Reykholt.. With Robin of Locksley one the market (which is a absolute beast of a game) there is simply no need for any game called Reykholt. Great artwork but just a phony, completely overpriced dazzler.

  • @RobertKonigsberg

I understand why people don't like Reykholt. I've found that as long as there's 3P, I'm happy to play this. The 2P options just leave nothing interesting to do.

But I think we are all more comfortable with the longer wave. I get real anxious if it's too short. Otherwise great video, just the wave was too short. It was hard to focus after that. Please.
