What TRIGGERED Ireland's BODHRÁN BOOM?!

  • The Irish Bodhrán is sometimes described as the heartbeat of Irish music, and whilst we know the tradition was born on this Island, remarkably little is known about how this vibrant tradition came to be. In this second part of my documentary series, I hope to separate the facts from the folklore, and extract the truth from the mysterious tales of the drums origins, which track the very history of Ireland.
    🥁 I’m Ruairi Glasheen, and I’m a percussionist, composer and filmmaker based in London.

    Amazing film. You extracted the Soul of that goat 🐐 on its simple piece of wood 🪵. And it's a giant Soul, trembling with a big heartbeat 💓
    I started my musical journey with Malachy drum 2000. Then I visited the shop 2001, started my flute journey full of Matt Molloy, Kevin Coneff vibes, beating Charlton Heston's wooden leg of Long John on the Hispaniola's deck 🏴‍☠️... Some may know what I'm thinking about... That's the magical music of Paddy Moloney 💓
    Bodhrán is everywhere since there. Heartbeat of life.

    It's high time the instrument got more respect, so many thanks for this really good detailed insight Ruairi. I've seen sublime bodhrán players insulted by mediocre fiddlers, and total beginners thinking its ok to join a session if you own a drum.
    Its amongst the most expressive percussion instruments in the world with much practice and some vision, so I love to hear young players with passion pushing the envelope of what is possible with the instrument. As a true musical instrument, it is younger than the electric guitar, so we are still all learning what the bodhrán can say. Thanks for all your work in sharing so much of its past with us!

    • @bodhran
      @bodhran  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your lovely note Mark, and for taking the time to watch and write. Agreed, the future is bright for the bodhrán, particularly given the many fantastic young players making it their own

    Wowwwww this documentary has made my Saturday night!!! Thank you so much Ruairi, can't wait for part 3!!! Malachy walking in during Gifty's interview was golden 🤣Gifty... What an incredibly amazing woman, her story was soo touching and my personal highlight of the episode. Coincidentally, what lead me to finding these videos was rewatching a video of me playing the bodhrán to my 3 month old baby today. When Gifty said: "The bodhrán is like... Carrying my own baby close to my heart and I feel the heartbeats of that baby" faaaaack that hit me hard...

    I would suspect that the rise in numbers of bodrain players is because it is assessable to anyone with a modicum of rhythm…hence its popularity. It means that people who can’t play fiddles, accordions or whistles have the opportunity to play in sessions. It still takes a lot of skill of course to play well.
