Thanks for the video! I bought the exact Champion duel fuel 4000w in this video. Sold my Predator 3500 because it would not run above 7000 ft elevation on recent vacation and weighs 100+ pounds. Found the Predator had gas in the oil. Put new carburetor on and sold it running great at 550 ft elevation. My main gripe with the Champion is the proprietary propane connection and SHORT hose. The brass male connection is slightly shorter and tapered compared to a standard male quick connector. Otherwise it runs fine. It took a few pulls to get it started on propane as in the video. I probably should have bought the Wen.
Another great video - thanks. I didn't know about the trick of warming the propane tank with the exhaust - we are up in Northern Montana right now, and have had the regulator freeze up a couple of times. I moved the propane tank behind my Pulsar GB400N (thanks for the video and recommendation on that generator) and all was good.
I have a 2kw Champion (gas only) and a 4500w Wen DF and 8750W Wen Inverter open frame DF. I prefer my Wen units over my Champion and I was a Champion guy for a long time.
Interesting review with 2 basically identical units branded differently! The substantial price savings of the WEN, combined with the "data meter" and longer hose, seems like a total win for the WEN. Johnny…how do you find how quiet the Wen and Champion generators (and their smaller cousins in the 2000W range) compared to the Genmax 3500 series and similar?

I bought the WEN DF500iX for my house backup generator. It's the smallest 240v dual fuel inverter generator I could find at 5000w surge and running watts of 4220w on gasoline and 3800w on propane. It runs everything in my house except my mini split. It powers 2 small chest freezers, a well pump, fridge, and my heat pump hot water tank. I do have a Grundfos SQ soft start well pump though, it only draws 5 amps on 240v, and the hot water tank only draws 350 watts in heat pump mode.
I mean SOP for gas engine is leave on choke until the engine either turns over on its own or is struggling for air, then you turnoff the choke. Same for propane… just keep pulling on choke until its actually got gas at the intake port.
I don’t know anything about generators. But these seem great for what I need. I’m trying to run about 3600w between 2 or 3 tools. If I’m only going for maybe 3-5 hours a day would these work or should I get something bigger?
You need a bigger unit if wanting to 3600 watts all the time. You need about 4500 running for that amount of loads. Something like this is more of what you need. amzn.to/4hQ1ucm Affiliate link
Love your content! I ended up buying an AIvolt 4300W suitcase gas only generator from Amazon for pretty cheap. It works well only issue is that it has a really small fuel tank, I think it’s about a gallon. I tried the Genmax fuel pump that screws on the filler cap so that I could connect an external boat gas can but it doesn’t fit. I wondered if you had any advice on how to connect a boat can to a generator in this scenario? Also, I haven’t seen anyone of the major generator reviewers cover this generator and wondered what your thoughts were on it for the price.
Thank you. Understood. I am learning... This pulsar is your preference over the Wen 3600 or Champion for RV? Seems it has more rated power, internal load regulator and quieter by around 7db average....correct?
I have an rv trailer with an external quick connect. Would it be possible to simply buy a long quick connect hose and hook either of these generators up to the rv quick connect directly without using the generators regulator?
I wanted to do the same thing, hook up to my RV quick connects, but unlike mentioned in this comparison video, both Champion 4000 and WEN 3600 genies DO NOT use STANDARD quick disconnects, unlike our RV's and BBQs. This unique connector is slightly shorter and has a "chamfered" tip, this allows it to fit into the unique quick-connect receiver (unknown model no). I've talked with a tech at WEN, from Illinois, and he too has been trying to find out from engineering what type of quick connect they are using. I've spent hours searching the web for this connector, as did the WEN tech, but have not found it yet. The WEN 2500 DOES use a standard screw-in propane line connector, and seems to work fine on a standard propane BBQ regulator. I'm not sure yet if the WEN 2500 has a build-in load regulator, as also mentioned in this video.
@@rv-ollie Wow, thanks for the great info. That really is a shame they did not use an existing North American standard. Still other then that they should be pretty close to exactly what I need. Are you happy with your WEN?
You still need the load regulator/ demand regulator which you can add the appropriate fitting like a brass 3/8 flare then add a regular propane hose from there. 3/8th hose with quick connect on the other end. You’ll then use load regulator and the existing hose that connects to the generator.
Thanks. Sorry, I guess I don't understand the concept of a load regulator since the outdoor grill quick connect is regulated by the RVs regulator on its tanks. It's not a direct connection to the tanks. I will look into it. You do a great job comparing and explaining stuff. Guess I missed the different types of regulators.
This is a great video, but I live at almost 7000 feet. I'm looking at high altitude carburetors to help adjust for the altitude. Will the upgraded carburetor help with the lpg as well? I don't want to have to go with a larger generator if I don't have to to accommodate for where I live.
Cannot plug my RV plug, NEMA tt30r, into the Wen since the cord will not clear the generator frame below the outlet. I cannot find a simple NEMA tt30r male / female adapter that I can plug into the generator. Any ideas?
I own both the 2kw and 4kw Champion dual fuel inverters and have modified the regulators to work with a RV low pressure LP system. Never have I had to use heat, just take it easy and removing the smaller regulator is no issue. Also the large regulator is a negative pressure type, meaning it won't allow LP to pass through without a vacuum from the engine. Mod is easy, just have to know exactly the parts needed. At the same time, I put a male LP connector onto the the output side of the larger regulator so I can take a normal LP extension hose and hook up. I put a female LP connector on the short hose to the inverter and I can run the inverter as far from the RV as I want. I also have a female input on the large regulator and run an extension LP line to it from the RV. I've move the inverter as much as 40 feet from the low pressure hookup without an issue. Also it appears you must have the "pin" on the inverter male connector or the male line will not stay connected. It looks like the pin activated a release on the inverter female connector that allows it to lock the male connector in place. Due to the resistance needed to get the connector/pin fully seated, I haven't been able to find a way around it. As a backup, I ordered a second regulator.LP line (not sold separately) , then removed the line and put a female on the end. That way I carry a spare, just in case.
Awesome comparison. Unfortunately I can’t get any of it in California. I’d probably have to get to Vegas. Would you recommend Predator 5000 for RV 30 amp use?
Not just that but to move out a communist state that doesn’t believe you should have any personal freedoms. However if you voted for people that passed this BS in California please stay in California and not bring that North Korea shit to another state
Where can you find a 4000 -5000w generator without the CO2 detectors? Borrowed a generator during a power outage and what a pain. Kept having to restart because of the wind shutting it down.
@@johnnysweekends Thanks, will check it out. Would like to see reviews of generators with the CO2 detectors runnng in a windy condition. Bet they all fail after a short period of time. Is that why with all the complaints no reviews are ever done?
@thomaschadwick4699 I haven’t had problems with mine in the wind. I make sure the exhaust is blowing down wind in an open area… Plus generator tents can help it coming back around. Most sensors can be modified or unplugged but there are still gens with out carbon monoxide sensors so may want to check those out
@@johnnysweekends Thanks great.....but why is anyone, including yourself, afraid to do an actual test on a windy day. About 25% of your videos are taken up with sound checks. How about a couple of your generator videos doing a CO2 check in a windy condition to see how often they shut down, that would also help everyone to make an intelligent decision. Must be too much to ask so we will still be getting the old easy sound checks on every generator review.
I have had two wen generators. The first lasted about a month of regular use and threw a rod. Got refunded. The second one was the 3500 inverter unit. Got it and used it maybe twice then put it away. Got it out the other day and changed the oil and fired it up on a camping trip. Not 10 hours of use the main board capacitors blew up and caught fire. Never buy wen generators. Total junk! I also have a predator generator from Harbor freight. Over 100 hours of use with no problems and only two oil changes. Easily hits the wattage advertised.
How did you wire in the tachometer? Also, do these have fuel levels/gaugues, hourmeters, and oil change notice lights? I love my little Honda generators but they’re lacking some features. Edit: also, how easy are these to maintain? Change/fill oil, access air filter, etc? Again, this is a weak point on the small Hondas.
Mainly to be the air out of the line. Much like hooking up as new propane tank to a grill or Rv there is air in the line for a few seconds. So by telling people to choke it its helping move the air out and actual propane gas in. Once its primed I guarantee you won’t have to do that again. I should try it just to show people.
@jgranger2002 the carb doesn’t do anything when on propane. It’s an entry point only. The throttle plate stays open. And propane is under pressure, hence no choke needed. Only reason to choke it is first time use to remove the air.
Great info, thanks so much. I’m really enjoying your channel. I just ordered my Wen 3600 based upon your review. As you suggested I plan to use “Lucas Oil 10003 Fuel Treatment” and wondered if I can safely combine it with Sta-Bil fuel additive since most of our local gas supply contains ethanol? Thank you.
The Lucas fuel conditioner is a cleaner, ethanol neutralizer and stable in one. Do not as anything to it. It’s all you need. I over treaf mine by a extra half to one ounce And glad you like the channel
Hi Johnny. Well, I received my WEN 3600 a few days and broke it in using unleaded gas (10% ethanol) for 4 hours, then propane for the remaining 4 hours while maintaining the load under 50% and occasionally switching to eco mode. Prior to starting, as you suggested I removed the spark plug and dropped a TBSP of oil into the engine, and used Lukas to treat the gas. I experienced absolutely no issues with starting or operation during the break in. I also purchased the magnetic dip stick. When changing the oil out (Synthetic 5W-30) I happily noticed very few metal particles in the old oil or on the magnetic stick. I do wish that WEN provided some type of a drain tube with fitting to easily drain the oil instead of their current method which can be haphazard. I’ve seen drain tubes with connectors on Amazon however oil plugs vary in size so I may have to contact WEN for the correct thread size. I was able to locate some non ethanol gas after break in which I’ll combine with Lucas next time I use the generator. Thank you again for the advice and keep up the good work. 🙂👍
My Champion won't start on propane without causing severe arm injury. Very inconsistent. Won't easily start again once I finally get it started. They sent me a replacement regulator but I haven't tried it out yet. Ridiculous that it won't start on LP right out of the box. An electric start on this would've been great.
You do some really good generator reviews. Have you considered testing THD% at different loads and fuel efficiency. There is quite a wide range of rated efficiencies from 4 to 7 kwh per gallon. Pulsar 40isco 4000w and Wen 56477i 4800w have the highest efficiency that I could find. There is a good low cost meter for testing THD on Amazon. Amprobe AMP-220 True-RMS 600A AC/DC Clamp Meter
I have a real expensive Fluke meter and even then fluke says testing for THD needs an analyzer and more. It’s not so simple as it takes a lot of training and math. A oscilloscope can at least see a dirty wave and discrepancies in the wave. Not as accurate but still an indicator.
Thanks for the nice well produced video, a lot of work. Any cost per hour to operate gas vs. propane. I have heard propane operation for these units is quite a bit higher.
Really depends more on price per galling of gasoline vs propane. $4.35 avg for gasoline Verses $3.49 for propane Depends as some only pay $2.50 for propane while gasoline might be $3.99 or so.
Pulsar is terrible. I own both a Pulsar generator and mower and they suck donkey dong. The mower's deck is so paper thin that rocks have shot through it like bullets. I haven't really used the generator but it's a turd to get started.
Such a bad choice for comparison since these are both cheap Chinese stolen knockoffs of better quality generators. Why not compare the knockoffs to the real thing, that would have some meaning.
Hey, lets see some reviews of the generators running in windy conditions. How often will they stop because of the CO2 detectors. Why are all reviews given on warm sunny days when the weather is perfect? Lets do some real reviews. In windy conditions, temps below freezing, rain and etc. No one will do these.....Why?

I bought the WEN DF500iX for my house backup generator. It's the smallest 240v dual fuel inverter generator I could find at 5000w surge and running watts of 4220w on gasoline and 3800w on propane. It runs everything in my house except my mini split. It powers 2 small chest freezers, a well pump, fridge, and my heat pump hot water tank. I do have a Grundfos SQ soft start well pump though, it only draws 5 amps on 240v, and the hot water tank only draws 350 watts in heat pump mode.
Can you do a video installing a generator exhaust extension hose on the wen or champion generator to run outside your home?
I mean SOP for gas engine is leave on choke until the engine either turns over on its own or is struggling for air, then you turnoff the choke.
Same for propane… just keep pulling on choke until its actually got gas at the intake port.
I don’t know anything about generators. But these seem great for what I need. I’m trying to run about 3600w between 2 or 3 tools. If I’m only going for maybe 3-5 hours a day would these work or should I get something bigger?
You need a bigger unit if wanting to 3600 watts all the time. You need about 4500 running for that amount of loads. Something like this is more of what you need. amzn.to/4hQ1ucm

Did you try the new genmax fuel pump with adapters ?? Here is an informational video..😀👍🏼. th-cam.com/video/MWwjUJMm5hQ/w-d-xo.html
Wonder if we can trust the different engine manufacturer used here
They us the same engine from Zonsen
If Pulsar has load regulator inside unit how do you connect to an RV without doubling the regulator which won't work...RVs are already regulated?
You have a pressure regulator … then a load regulator or demand regulator.
The pressure regulator you typically don’t want to double up on.
Thank you.
Good question. I was also wanting to hookup to bbq quick connect which is regulated by rv. @johhnysweekends
This is a great video, but I live at almost 7000 feet. I'm looking at high altitude carburetors to help adjust for the altitude. Will the upgraded carburetor help with the lpg as well? I don't want to have to go with a larger generator if I don't have to to accommodate for where I live.
Love this thanks
Cannot plug my RV plug, NEMA tt30r, into the Wen since the cord will not clear the generator frame below the outlet. I cannot find a simple NEMA tt30r male / female adapter that I can plug into the generator. Any ideas?
make one!! very simple!
Walmart !! and no on the predator 5000
To many having issues
Try here walmrt.us/3yqCMxi
I would recommend you move out of California
@@montanaplease 😂 why? For a generator?
Not just that but to move out a communist state that doesn’t believe you should have any personal freedoms.
However if you voted for people that passed this BS in California please stay in California and not bring that North Korea shit to another state
@@chancejensen9324 No, because California is only for kweers and illegal beans.
Where can you find a 4000 -5000w generator without the CO2 detectors? Borrowed a generator during a power outage and what a pain. Kept having to restart because of the wind shutting it down.
This one and it has auto fuel switch technology

@@johnnysweekends Thanks, will check it out. Would like to see reviews of generators with the CO2 detectors runnng in a windy condition. Bet they all fail after a short period of time. Is that why with all the complaints no reviews are ever done?
I plan on hacking mine and bypassing that sensor because Im going to put mine in its own sound box to help DB numbers.
@thomaschadwick4699 I haven’t had problems with mine in the wind. I make sure the exhaust is blowing down wind in an open area…
Plus generator tents can help it coming back around.
What do you use to monitor the volts/amps/Hz and watts? ( the digital display that you have in the lower left corner of the video frame)
Again, this is a weak point on the small Hondas.
why was one running almost twice as long on propane?
If propane doesn’t go through the carburetor, what’s the point in activating the choke when starting on propane?
The air entering the engine is still going through the throttle plate in the carb. Cold engine needs choke.
What gas/propane generator that you have ever tested is the quietest (idle and under load)?
The quietest dual fuel is the champion 4500 that I have tested…
Great info, thanks so much. I’m really enjoying your channel. I just ordered my Wen 3600 based upon your review. As you suggested I plan to use “Lucas Oil 10003 Fuel Treatment” and wondered if I can safely combine it with Sta-Bil fuel additive since most of our local gas supply contains ethanol? Thank you.
The Lucas fuel conditioner is a cleaner, ethanol neutralizer and stable in one. Do not as anything to it. It’s all you need. I over treaf mine by a extra half to one ounce
And glad you like the channel
@@johnnysweekends Thank you for the advice regarding Lucas usage . :)
@@johnnysweekends Interesting. I didn't know that.
Thanks for the nice well produced video, a lot of work. Any cost per hour to operate gas vs. propane. I have heard propane operation for these units is quite a bit higher.
Really depends more on price per galling of gasoline vs propane.
$4.35 avg for gasoline
Verses $3.49 for propane
Depends as some only pay $2.50 for propane while gasoline might be $3.99 or so.
Positive Comment!!!!
Have you ever tried using a 1lb propane tank?
These would burn right through a 1lb. 5lb minimum 👍🏼
Thank you I appreciate you your response I'm just seeing it
I'm not being picky but you did crank the wen 5 times in choke position and champion only 3 times it makes a difference
Good eye… did that on purpose to see if there was really a difference
Wen is still a better buy
Champion says 3 pulls and wen says 3 to 5. You weren't listening.
I use to like Champion But there Prices has went up so Much to where there better buys like the Wen , Genmax , MaXpeedingrods , Power Smart , Aceup
shouldent yank pull starts like that. can brake the plastic engagment pin.
Pulsar is better.
