    Thank you for this video. There are a lot of great tips! I was tracking with you until the very last thing you did. I am completely lost after to open Blend If to start to feather the grass back in. You did not add the sky back in & I can't figure out how one would to that now that the copy of layer 1 will be covering it. I think I am missing something:/

    Wish you would have been a little more descriptive, it's obvious that it works great but I'm attempting to apply this technique on a different photo where the foreground has similar colors to the background and using multiple blend if layers seem to solve that problem but it's very tricky.

    This seemed like a magic fix for a plastic mesh object I was clipping, however, no matter what workaround I tried I continually had residue from the brush technique and when I skipped that step the area became transparent upon saving.

    This is a great tutorial, Brendan. I had a question, though - what if you wanted to remove the tree from the first photo entirely (leaving everything else)? Could you use this method? And then how do you basically delete the tree?

    • @BrendanWilliamsTutorials
      @BrendanWilliamsTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you wanted to do that, it would be faster to just use a basic selection tool to go around the mountains like the quick selection tool. I only used the Blend-if example in order to keep the tree branches, but it's not always the fastest tool if you just want to select the horizon line.
      If you are unfamiliar with the quick selection tool, I have a tutorial on my website you can find here: bwillcreative.com/2020/01/19/how-to-cut-out-an-image-in-photoshop/

    how do you turn a layer black when you create it?

  • @efeacarefeacar
    @efeacarefeacar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best tutorial ever on this subject. I have a question though, how to mask out white on white pictures? for example a woman dresses white yoga tights and a white tshirt, in front of a white background? most of the tutorials use already high contrasted pictures, but how to do with low contrast on colors?

    • @BrendanWilliamsTutorials
      @BrendanWilliamsTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since Photoshop uses contrast to make most auto selections, its hard to make fast selections with a lot of the same colours. Your best bet is the pen tool and cut out the subject manually, but you could also try the object selection tool new to CC 2020.
      You can see how it works here: bwillcreative.com/2020/01/19/how-to-cut-out-an-image-in-photoshop/

    Been trying to cut out perfectly the tree of slowthais new album cover. Does not work for me at all which both methods, any recommendations? Still takes too much away from the tree and with overlay brush white n black there are still fringes and halos around the edges,

    • @BrendanWilliamsTutorials
      @BrendanWilliamsTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There needs to be some level of contrast between the foreground and background. From the album cover I've seen the sky is also pretty dark along with the tree. You could try increasing the luminance of the blues in the sky with the hue saturation to help create some more contrast to help these techniques work.

  • @davidhowe1069
    @davidhowe1069 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool video! I've always been kind of intimidated by blend if and channels, now I feel more comfortable and will definitely try it. Could you do a video showing how you would add the reflection of the sky in the water? Thanks Brendan.

    • @BrendanWilliamsTutorials
      @BrendanWilliamsTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to feel the same. They can seem confusing but once you practice them more they are extremely straight forward! For reflections you can also just use the blend if sliders and apply a flipped version of your photo over the water. Add a gaussian and/or motion blur from there and you're good to go. I'll definitely make a tutorial about it in the future.

  • @MrJoeyarrigo

    Excellent techniques Brendan. Very enlightening and empowering. Hope you don't mind me pointing that as an educator you tend to move through your tutorials, and speak, a bit too fast, which makes it somewhat difficult to follow. Most of us are merely proficient with Photoshop, not an expert like yourself. Thanks.

    If anyone does all that just to replace the sky then I suggest using Luminar 4, give it a try on the same image and only takes 5 seconds. But if you are masking the tree for other purposes then yes it is a superb masking technique.
