    Most criticizim will come from arm chair mechanics who never got grease on their hands. Thirty plus years doing the work in all types of conditions has taught me that you use what works to get the job done. This is a realistic video of how a good many excellent mechanics really get the job done. Keep up the good work, and please keep the videos coming.

      I'm glad I don't live where they dump salt on the roads all winter. Those little clips can be a pain in the ass even if they aren't rusted to oblivion. I think if you have never had a problem replacing a u-joint, then you haven't done very many u-joints in your life.

      Yup. Them damn things are a pain in the ass. I need my axle gone through and I'm tired of doing it myself. It goes in Monday for someone else to deal with it.

    This is the crap that happens to all of us when we work at home. It's real and unedited and I can totally appreciate it. I've done many u-joints with just a hammer and sockets without even a vice to help. I haven't done one like that one but that tone ring in the way has to add an extra challenge that someone who hasn't done one doesn't really understand.

    Man i felt your pain every step of the way. I have done several of those joints and are always a PIA. After many years of wrenching i still break stuff every so often and i beat myself up then i take a deep breath and move on.
    Thanks for the effort to record this and to show DIYs how to replace a U -Joint and what can go wrong.

    I took an old screwdriver, cut a slit down the center of the handle and cut the shank. Put it in a cordless screw gun...use it mostly on king pin axles. Napa sells special sanding bits for a die grinder but they can be used in a cordless screw gun as well. To this day, I'm surprised you don't have any videos on Airbag systems Paul. Thanks for investing so much time into this channel Paul. We all appreciate it.

    Next time you have to change a U Joint put the caps in the freezer for a few hours. One it holds the needle rollers in better because the grease is cold and and 2 you can press the caps in with your fingers because they shrink when cold.

    Danner, don't be so hard on yourself, it happens. I'm sure you will find the part and make it right when you fix the abs problem. On that plastic debris shield, if both the pins are still okay you could try heating either the end of the pin or the hole it fits in with a soldering iron, just enough to expand the plastic a little, to get a tight fit. Or if that fails or if the pins are broke drill out where the pins were and just use small nuts and bolts with loctite to hold the halves together. I wish you good luck with your repairs on the Jeep. I enjoy watching your videos even when you make mistakes and we all make mistakes. So never let bad comments get to you, I'm sure the people making these bad comments have made way bigger mistakes than this.

    I work at an Audi dealer in Germany and we use a sand blasting cabinet for things like that to clean parts up first, just makes it a little easier. After sand blasting (if time permits) I soak the axle up in WD-40 or equivalent for a while. If that doesn't help, I heat it up with a torch... Buuuuuuuuut not everybody has this kind of equipment at home in their garage so I guess this is a very realistic "backyard mechanic repair". I love your videos, keep making them!

    Knock the cup in and then take the snap ring out then do the other side the same way. When you install the new joint push the cups in until they bottom out in the cross , install the clips and then tap on the cross to push the cup outboard until the lock clip seats. When you get done it should be free in all directions with no binding. It was enjoyable watching and everyone has broke a part at one time or another :D

    My first Ball Joint Press was Harbor Freight Tool. It was a BEAST that served me well, and I even ordered the master adapter set when I started this garage. Snap On stayed on my back until I bought his BJP1 with the extra adapter set. He sold my HF unit for more than I paid for it so no harm no foul I guess. I don't think the Snap On works any better though.

    Thanks Danner this worked great for me. Thank you! I couldn't have done it without watching. I actually took out the u-joints and drive shaft on both sides just leaving just the end that goes thru the bearing and re-attaching the nut. This turned my vehicle into a 2wd. I did this because my entire front axle needed new bearings and seals. I took out the drive line from the transfer case to the front axle also...and drained the differential. Maybe at some point if work slows down I'll rebuild the whole thing.

    Bigger vise would help for holding, soak with spray from the beginning >keeping the caps in the center of the vise jaws< helps in starting the caps straight as the vise jaws will go off center on either side, but nothing really makes it "easy"-lol I used to do u-joints all the time with sockets and a drilling sledge back when I was young, but I never had to contend with a tone ring, what a PITA, I so sympathize.

  • @PeteJacksonPapasVlogs
    @PeteJacksonPapasVlogs 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    A year ago (maybe a little longer) I changed the Axle joints on my '96 XJ.
    They were squeaking at full lock, with front axle disengaged. With the axle engaged I was getting popping, clicking and steering wheel "Hop" (for lack of a better term).
    Not the most fun experience doing them in my garage due to their age, mileage, and weather at the time, but I got them done nonetheless. I used the beat it with a BFH technique as they would not come out using the Vise method. I don't have ABS, so I have the dust shields, which will get damaged in the process, but nothing a metal work can't fix.
    There is a major boost in pride in ones vehicle and ones abilities when you conquer something like this.

    Thanks for the video, Nice to see you have to do a job like most of us that watch you channel. Sometimes even paying attention things can get expensive. I had to replace the whole steering box on my S-10 when changing the pitman arm. it bound up using a the puller and even with heat it would not free up. So I eneded up with a new sterring box and pitman arm over a worn bushing.

  • @leebarnes655
    @leebarnes655 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Keep on keeping it real Danner, you know what's important. Could have hit the vise jaws with a hammer to help at some points, the jaws tend to cock over and lock up when you use one side like that. But because of the U-joint itself you couldn't place the pressing point dead center in the vise jaws anyway, such is life. I've found out the hard way that it's not so much cheap aftermarket parts that make these little adventures so difficult as it's the general lack of proper machining of replacement parts anywhere that is the real issue. OEM included. After having my rear handed to me for the first time in my career recently by a dodge U-joint, I determined that the cross was at the very least .030 over length and the clips would never fit without some further 'machining' done to the brand new cross. Next time, I'm writing down the dimensions and measuring the yoke to see how much spread is required of the yoke to even fit the clips on. Would save me half a day at least. Used to be a half hour with a hammer and any vise and you were done.

    I always push the first cap through , past where it goes , put clip in and then the other cap . like you did at the end . And when taking a stubborn one out . When i have pressure on u joint with press , i gently hit the yoke by the u joint caps . the shock usually gets it moving . some people hit the tool , but i would rather hit the shaft than my tool. I have a u joint vid up .

    Don't be so upset with yourself, we've all made mistakes. It seems that when you get into projects and you constantly try to avoid doing something, you eventually end up facing the inevitable. I can tell you that i enjoy both electrical and mechanical aspects of cars. I hate monotony. Being hunched over a hood 3 cars in a row sucks as much as getting 3 no starts with all different variables. I'm not perfect at the electrical troubleshooting side but that's what makes it fun and the more i discover, the more i can apply. Same with the mechanical side. I can do head gaskets on a grand am in half the time it took me to do upper intake gaskets on it the first time. You learn shortcuts. Now you can do a tone ring video if you run into it on another car and add it to the series :-)

    nice job, i just went through something similar not long ago. with all of the struggle i have one question mr danner. where was the spray lube? haha. nice job man. if it was always easy people wouldn't need DIY videos right? i had to laugh literally out loud when your frustration about the angle was coming through, simply because it reminded me of myself, only without the swearing and fetal position weepage. thanks for posting. I had the same problem with the MOOG ujoints about the c clip not going in there. Was so mad, mine was for pathfinder front / rear u joints. Believe i finally went and bought a different brand. MOOG got it wrong!

    This is what keeps your channel/s interesting Paul. Your electrical diagnosis and knowledge is first class. Mechanicing skills ummm..... Haha just kidding mate. The workshop and driveway environments are so completely different its not funny. Access to special tools and workshop equipment that just make a job so much easier. Looks to me that you were tempted not to release this video because the Taurus vid you spoke of was a few months ago now. My way of figuring out if there's play is to simply jam my finger in the joint. The finger will feel even the most minute of play in between the plates, eyes deceive. Remember looking at an axle joint, thinking it had play, got it all worked out of the car only to find it was rock solid.

    paul, next time, hit the cap in to loosen the clip. Remove, then turn it 180 and repeat. When you install, put the joint in and one cap all the way in. Install clip, turn 180, slide the joint up, install other cap and clip. Or you could have asked your brother. Would he have given you crap about it?

    long time no speak. All work-No play. Im back now, I just refreshed my SD Premium subscription two days ago. I have a quick question. I dumped my 04 Monte Carlo and now have a 2004 Trailblazer EXT 4.2L. My question is this: I looked at the wiring diagram for the power seat (driver) and can't figure out if the power to the seat is supposed to stay on EVEN without key in ignition. I never had power seats so I'm not sure if the seat stays with power until the button is pressed at which then the voltage is delivered.? Not a major issue, but thought I'd ask you because you are the MAN.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    after I get my snap rings in I like to put both ends of the yoke in a vice a squeeze them together ,seating the clips against the inside of the yoke because it can be spread a bit ,pushing in on the caps. it will free it up so it moves nice.

    Per WikiPedia:
    A universal joint (universal coupling, U-joint, Cardan joint, Spicer or Hardy Spicer joint, or Hooke's joint) is a joint or coupling in a rigid rod that allows the rod to "bend" in any direction, and is commonly used in shafts that transmit rotary motion. It consists of a pair of hinges located close together, oriented at 90° to each other, connected by a cross shaft. The universal joint is not a constant-velocity joint.

    Scotty Kilmer would have had this done in 2 minutes 13 seconds. He would then spend another minute or so telling you that you should sell the Jeep and buy a Toyota. Everybody has had a simple job that kicked their ass. At least you didn't give up and set it on fire.... wait, what?

    Moog parts are not as good as they once used to be, I found this out the hard way with a pitman arm that did not fit right or last as long as the OEM part. Moog tie-rods lasted half the mileage as the OEM.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sell out is a strong word don't you think? Eric is my friend, so I'll respectfully disagree. He has a different approach to things, he really focuses on the DIYer with little to know experience and there are a ton of people in this world that need his help.
      He's also found a way to get sponsors to come in and help him. That isn't selling out, that's called knowing how to make money. I'm happy for him.

    Hi Paul can you tell me something, the earth on a MAF sensor marked as SIGNAL earth, it goes to the ECU, where does it go to, does it go direct to earth or via something else inside the ecu, what's the difference from signal earth and proper earth, can you earth out to battery negative a MAF sensor earth lead if you suspect the earth isnt going to earth inside ecu hope that made some sense from Fred in England.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It goes to the board first before ultimately going to ground externally.
      It is done this way for noise reasons. For the sensing circuit to compare between the signal and signal return wire. And both wires have the same electrical noise which cancels it out.
      As a test only, yes, you can ground a sensor externally
