- This year our annual fishing trip took us back to the wilderness of Assynt, an area we previously fished a few years ago.
Last time we fell in love with this area and knew we would be back. There are hundreds of lochs to explore with some requiring a fair bit of hike in to the hills.
Our main focus this year was the Assynt crofters trust lochs. They have over 200 lochs in their estate.
We left Glasgow early to be there on time to have an evening session on our first day. We arrived there around 3pm, got our permits from the hardware shop in Lochinver.
Soon headed to our cottage, had something to eat, sorted our gear and headed to loch Cul Farooqi in Culkein. A lovely loch with close proximity to sea.
It has clear banks, making casting very easy. We approached the loch from eastern bank and it looked very enticing, however a westerly wind made it almost impossible to have a decent cast.
Soon we headed to western bank, spread out and started to fish different areas of the loch.
This loch has a reputation of being dour and not a loch where you would expect to catch loads of half pound fish.
However if you connect with one it’s likely to be a good size.
For the first hour or so it seemed this loch had no fish as we all struggled to connect with anything. With decent breeze we persevered with traditional wet flies and kept changing them regularly.
After a couple of hours fishing we started connecting with some fish, though mostly small a couple of good sized were also landed.
Hopes were high as the sun disappeared in to the horizon as the late evening can be really good here to target individual rising fish, particularly on edges of reed beds. Not sure what happened as no rising fish were to be seen and we continued to fish blind with limited success.
We stopped fishing around 11pm and one thing was sure from the evening’s proceedings that we would return to this loch during our trip.
As we settled into the rhythm of Loch Cul Farooqi, the evening sky began to paint a breathtaking tapestry of colors, casting a golden hue over the rugged landscape. The rugged terrain surrounding the loch was a stark contrast to the serene waters, and the sounds of nature enveloped us. Birds swooped down to catch insects skimming the water's surface, and the distant call of a red deer echoed through the hills.
Our perseverance with traditional wet flies paid off as the fish became more active with the setting sun. The gentle ripples on the loch's surface mirrored the dance of our lines as we cast them, each ripple a silent testament to the stories of countless anglers who had come before us.
As twilight descended upon Assynt, the loch's atmosphere changed once more. The calmness allowed us to reflect on the day's fishing, cherishing the moments of anticipation, the thrill of the catch, and the sprite of trust among friends sharing the adventure. We knew that in the days ahead, more lochs awaited us, each with its own unique character and challenges.
