Mafia II is still worth another play through I saw on reddit somewhere someone put out a high res textures thing had me wanting to go again. The game just made you feel like an up and coming made man so we'll. Like how GTA Vice City really made you feel like it was the 80s.
No because I grew up with the low res games of yester year and can completely see how we enjoyed them back then even if the graphics don’t hold up. I don’t see how people will think today’s graphics will be in unbearable just as previous generations aren’t.
zyphon7 it’ll probably get to a point to where it physically can’t get any better. It might not be in my lifetime but it’ll get to a point of where the hardware and engines are so advanced that it looks better than real life.
@@Goosavich 2D and pixel art games are way more tolerable, even enjoyable, for us. But old "ugly" 3D games are not, unless there's nostalgia. I can easily pick up, say, Call of Duty 1 and enjoy it since I played it as a kid, but I missed the original Half-Life and honestly I couldn't bring myself to finish it a few years ago.
I actually thought Gears looked better than Gears 5, because it set the esthetic stage for the series in being dark and bland and grey and gritty, an extra piece of storytelling; the story being this is not a happy world where we are the invincible force crushing are enemies. We are the losing side, the difference between a dream an a nightmare. Gears captured that...
J Dog I can see how that works for a storytelling standpoint, but it seems like it could be kind of boring to look at for a long time based on the clip showed
I really wish people would realise that not everything needs to be super bright and colourful to look good. Lack of colour can really improve the atmosphere and can drastically change the style and tone of a game and there are plenty of games with limited colour pallets that look amazing.
I always think that the graphics they had back then was "so good" for their time and when we look back and call the graphics shit, Our graphics we have right now will also be called shit in 30 years
G9 Ranjiplays Future won’t be that much about graphics anymore - many video gaming already look very close to animated movies (that basically have infinite processing power by not having to render in real time). You can see that by comparing toy story to kingdom hearts 3 - there is a video from digital foundry. We will totally laugh about ourself how we played games „through a window“(monitor) and pressing button to remote controlling our avatar though when Vr will be the main form of gaming in the future. Half life Alyx players know that feeling already.
@@coolertuep given that in 30 years, we dont need controllers, and gaming companies develop a device that catches brainwaves, it's our concious we use to control our character that it's like we ourselves are inside virtual reality, kinda like jonny quest.
Bernard Delos Santos You already don’t need controllers - Vr headsets like the oculus quest has hand tracking. And you can already be in the video game - it’s already a possibility with current technology.

Love this series. I've been gaming since the release of the Atari 2600, console gamer and a PC gamer as well. I love taking a look back, no matter what the age difference, at how things have evolved! I remember seeing Pitfall for the first time when it came out, and I was like, dang, that looks so realistic haha. Anyway, yeah, love checking this out. Would love to see a really deep dive, a large age spread in series as well. Thanks!
I see more details in the first idk what he is talking about but it may be a visual trick because you can easily hide "shitty" graphic with dark colors. Its obvious that the newer version can handle more due to updated engine but if its the visual details that matters it looks way better in first. With that said i prefer 5 just because it looks more clean idk i cant handle "dirty" looking games
Gears 1 atmosphere was better cuz it was spooky, horror-esque. If Gears 5 went for the same atmosphere, it would be leagues better. The level in the lab in Gears 5 is a great example

Persona 5 of all games I've ever played, has the most flash and style in EVERY aspect. I am currently playing P5R (beat P5 in 2017) and am loving it all over again. Easily in my top 10 games of this generation and it's my first Persona ever.
The graphics were the first thing i noticed on the new MW. The way soldiers are actually CAMOUFLAGED in their gear is mind blowing. There were parts in the game when allies were literally blending in and popping in and out of the environment so well that i couldn’t even see them myself with my initial glance of the screen. Excellent job
I'm not sure quality is the word I'd use, but everything is converging towards the mass market. There's definitely game series which I loved back in the day which I'm reluctant to play new titles of just because they have given up their niche within the market and have become cookie cutter experiences or simply at complete odds of what made the originals great.

I remember getting a 360 for Christmas. Bought GOW2 and got the RROD. I ended up tearing off the shell and putting a fan behind it to keep it cool while I did a straight run through of it. Sent it back to the seller and bought another and had no issues.
Network Q RAC rally championship came out in 1996 (the previous version in 1993). That was the rally game that set me onto the Impreza WRX, and it was an absolute blast to play.
I swear I take a screenshot every other minute when playing the game. Aesthetically speaking its best game I've played and in my opinion the best looking one that currently exists

The difference between Open World games of the past, present, and future (via next gen m.2 NVMe SSDs) would be a cool to look over. I know you guys have already done a couple of videos on Open World games before but I think going into the details of how memory subsystems and throughput function in hardware architecture and how that translates into gameplay features (in a similar vein to the videos you guys did to simplify the understanding of GPUs and CPUs a while back.) would be a great as a prep for what to expect in future games and the overall performance discussion.

It's true. Persona 5 may be a great game, and it has a unique art direction with a lot of style, but the actual graphics tech is extremely dated for a current gen game. And yeah, I know it also came out on PS3, but it doesn't even look remotely impressive for a PS3 game either. Then again, I feel like all of the SMT and its various spinoffs, including Persona (which ironically seems to have higher production values than the main series), have always been behind the curve in terms of graphical fidelity.
With textures up to 4k we are pretty much at the limit of detail our eyes can even perceive, but lighting itself still has a ways to go. RTX lighting is a good step but it still needs work.
Interesting video. I am a huge Borderlands nerd, have all games/remaster and have been playing 3 on and off. I am almost done with my first season on COD MW and am enjoying it. I recently restarted Mafia 2 and just bought 3 with the Gamestop sales 😁
Since this is just a graphics showcase, I think it would have been more interesting to compare the latest CoD to the very first WW2 CoD, rather than CoD4
I think the editing got messed up near the end of the video. When he said “this compared to this” I think you should’ve showed the two versions not just one of them. Go to 12:34 and you’ll see what I mean. Loved the video though!

I’m 1 minute in and I’ve stopped. Gears of War was fantastic back then, yes but it still is. If the latest release in the series didn’t look better on newer machines all these years later then there would be a problem. But it’s no great big leap is it.
compared to some other games it doesn't really look like 2019. to be fair I didn't finish it since it was my first gears and I hated the shooting which is the biggest part of the game. If the previous entries were as bad as this one I don't know why it has so many fans.
@@cl0ud88 The gore. It's a mildly fun game, but if people stick with it is because of the gore. You can't deny that blowing up an enemy player with the gnasher feels rewarding. Or landing a headshot with the sniper and hearing that "exploding watermelon" sound.
I actually like more the pre rendered backgrounds when done right of course It gives a very exotic and other dimensional vibe It's good for sci fi games A good example that comes to mind is Digimon world it looks awesome still today
God, man, 360 PS3 gen was so desaturated and muddy, gritty feeling. It birthed some great games and made certain stories more immersive and emotional, but on the surface and especially in a list like this it really stands out.
Great video. I think that these "older games," which I have sunk numerous hours into in my youth, looked great at the time, carry that era of nostalgia, and had better story lines and character development than most of todays games. Obviously the developers had to offset graphic capabilities with a compelling story or in depth interface.
Modern graphics have personally blown me away as i couldnt afford next gen tell a few months ago so going from mw3 and gears 2 to mw 2019 and gears 4 was crazy
Btw regarding the Persona series I think we should also mention that the jump between Persona and Persona 4 was big, but the one from 4 to 5 was even bigger, just go back and watch a playthrough

They just need a machine that hits 60 fps on at least 1080p
With textures up to 4k we are pretty much at the limit of detail our eyes can even perceive, but lighting itself still has a ways to go. RTX lighting is a good step but it still needs work.
Yup we're kinda at the peak of great graphics, next thing the game developers would work on are physics, animations better ai, etc .....

Interesting video. I am a huge Borderlands nerd, have all games/remaster and have been playing 3 on and off. I am almost done with my first season on COD MW and am enjoying it. I recently restarted Mafia 2 and just bought 3 with the Gamestop sales 😁
Watching this makes me feel like we are spoiled today.
Since this is just a graphics showcase, I think it would have been more interesting to compare the latest CoD to the very first WW2 CoD, rather than CoD4

This is completely untrue. The standards for texturing changed completely between the two.
Showing the side-by-side of Borderlands 1 and 3 looks almost exactly like the couch co-op multiplayer of the games. Lol

I think the editing got messed up near the end of the video. When he said “this compared to this” I think you should’ve showed the two versions not just one of them. Go to 12:34 and you’ll see what I mean.

It's not messed up it is just him saying that seeing games from then to now the is a big difference but I would think it was messed up but the audio is not clipping

Gears of War was fantastic back then, yes but it still is.
If the latest release in the series didn’t look better on newer machines all these years later then there would be a problem.
But it’s no great big leap is it.
compared to some other games it doesn't really look like 2019. to be fair I didn't finish it since it was my first gears and I hated the shooting which is the biggest part of the game. If the previous entries were as bad as this one I don't know why it has so many fans.

@@cl0ud88 The gore. It's a mildly fun game, but if people stick with it is because of the gore. You can't deny that blowing up an enemy player with the gnasher feels rewarding. Or landing a headshot with the sniper and hearing that "exploding watermelon" sound.

WarWolves like he said it’s green and grey same thing with mw3 but mw2 had colorful graphics and people see it as one of the best cod games
I actually like more the pre rendered backgrounds when done right of course

Graphics ain't everything - my favorite game of the last couple of years is Stardew Valley, and it would be hard to call it visually stunning.
Graphics may not make batter games but they surely make games itself batter
this can be summed up in the "fine details" graphics havent changed much since the mid 2000's
Mafia 2 was a great game and truly immersive. I never knew anyone else at the time who had it.

God, man, 360 PS3 gen was so desaturated and muddy, gritty feeling. It birthed some great games and made certain stories more immersive and emotional, but on the surface and especially in a list like this it really stands out.
Are there any current Gen games that go full screen sight for all scopes in a first person shooter like the old school modern warfare clip you showed?

Great video. I think that these "older games," which I have sunk numerous hours into in my youth, looked great at the time, carry that era of nostalgia, and had better story lines and character development than most of todays games. Obviously the developers had to offset graphic capabilities with a compelling story or in depth interface.
Side note - Dirt 2.0 also has deformation with tires (accurately) ;) great vid

Modern graphics have personally blown me away as i couldnt afford next gen tell a few months ago so going from mw3 and gears 2 to mw 2019 and gears 4 was crazy
I can see why people can dislike this, games when they came out were obviously fun, it's only talking about how they changed over the years

Btw regarding the Persona series I think we should also mention that the jump between Persona and Persona 4 was big, but the one from 4 to 5 was even bigger, just go back and watch a playthrough
