    That solution with the bow roller pulling the anchor chain down to the attack angle of the windlass, is absolute genius... Well done...

      That 'thing' is that they are genuine. No artifice or put-on emotions. It's why I started watching the Vagabond crew, and why I stopped. These two are so 'real' and just damned nice.

    Good job on the windlass, just a couple of suggestions for future work ....... clean out the old holes a bit till you reach unaffected deck material, core plugging is a good idea especially considering the size of the holes, taper the edge of holes ~12:1 and apply increasing diameter glass matting to fair surface, for new holes good idea to over size drill holes fill with epoxy then drill final holes through 100% expoxy core, ensue a flat bed for the windlass on the deck, most important is to use a backing board under the deck to distribute the fixings load. Was going to suggest that very same jury rigged solution, just needs a little tweaking to prevent damage to deck ;)
    That is a beautiful Black German Shepard pup.

    You both are great team players, Khaira found the new windlass and Adam installs it, got it working perfectly with some tinkering, solving it with the forty dollar ball guide (this gave me a great idea for something I am working on!). You make it all look like its so much fun whether you are sailing or repairing, which is what makes the journey all the worthwhile! Thanks for the tip! Happy Sailing !!

    Very good solution. In Brazil we call it "gambiarra" when we do something wrong to make it right. Look carefully at the installation manual and you will see that the position is not correct. For the very high price of this reel, don't you think it's worth investing a little and placing it in the correct position above the deck? I don't know how much weight he uses as an anchor, but be careful with the fragility of what he did in the face of great efforts from the anchor.
    That everything right!
    A big hug and good winds!!!

    Too funny I was thinking about the same solution you came up with for your windlass. I don't know from "imperfect" but it seems like a KISS solution. Only issue I can think of is that it will be a periodic required change out of the roller and the arms of the roller support will be subject to fatigue load. Still if it works...two thumbs up for necessity engineering.

    A few videos ago Khiara said of herself "I'm such an elephant!" which at the time seemed a tad harsh but on seeing her falling over the old windlass... :) superb video this one great mix of everything. Thank you. All as well as the other suggestion from Robert Place I think that cleat can also be used to attach a snubber when the anchor is deployed.

    Enjoyed your video, you guys are such a great attitude. Good job on the windless, I think using that bow roller for an idler was about the best idea you could have had. Our boat had the windlessmounted in the chain locker the same way. Not the best way to set one up in my opinion. The problem with ours was always that once a little chain had piled up in the bottom of the locker, It would Back up and jam the windless, But we never could figure out a good way to remount it to the deck. Good sailing!

  • @rwplace
    @rwplace 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    That cleat is there to tie off a line to clip onto the anchor while under way to prevent an accidental deployment should the clutch slip or you have an electrical glitch and the windless decides to drop the anchor all on its own. Absent that tying one off a bow cleat can really save your bacon.

    It's probably enough to transfer the shock load to the deck through that cast housing and take it off the gypsy/axle/bearings, as you mentioned, don't you think?

  • @brucefletcher6179
    @brucefletcher6179 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You've actually got a fairly common problem with windlasses located in deck lockers. Best solutions I've seen involve two pieces. A stainless or aluminum skid plate at the fore edge of the locker (which you've already got) combined with a bow roller mounted down lower in the locker, forward of the windlass to "pull down" the chain. Chain now runs from the true bow roller, rides on the skid plate and pulled low by the second bow roller (need really good backing plates on this one!) giving it a much better lead to the windlass chain gypsy. Always need to have three links on the wheel to avoid skipping. Haven't had any luck searching for photos of this set up, but you can email me for a diagram. OK, wait, I should have watched to the end before commenting....

  • @davidalbright7335
    @davidalbright7335 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great episode. Congrats on the new windlass. We just went through a major bow refit to accommodate an electric windlass on our boat. The rule of thumb is no more than 6 degrees of rise or fall from the anchor roller to the gypsy. That is not always possible. You'll figure it out, for sure. BTW - the island you visited is pronounced "Tint - uh - mar." French. You guys were on the northeast corner of SXM. Did you sail to PInel, as well? Our favorite spot in the world is on Tintamarre. I could send you the GPS coordinates but then I would have to explain why. Lol. After my wife and I were married on SXM, we took a cruise with fifteen of our closest strangers to Tintamarre. Cheers!

  • @jbsanger696

    Great video! Suggestion - add an angled pad for the windless to sit on that's on the same plane as the chain... That should make the chain pull evanily into the storage locker...

  • @peterfrebold
    @peterfrebold 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    ..... great solution with the bow roller ..... can you make it so the roller spins so it does not flat spot .... gotta have loud tunes sometimes, it is just plain necessary ... I don't do it all the time but sometimes there is just the need, good choice of tunes to rock to ... smilin .... doing your homework, research sure paid off, 1,000 bucks, wowser! ..... have I mentioned before, love the interactions between the two of youse .... have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

    3:32 The old windlass saying one last "F YOU!" before the scrap yard, and while it's probably too late you could have cannibalised the old gypsy in place of the $40 bow roller, you know, just to show the old windlass who's boss. 😆

    you can bye cheep rubber mat like used in shower for you chain locker it will help reduce damage ,good idea with the roller that is what I would have done, maybe the windless should be on the deck. food for thought cheers great stuff guys

    3 day windlass install sounds about right, vertical windlass always has more chain/gypsy contact but your fix is pretty clever.I bet you guys could afford a new gun boat if Kiara went back to modeling for a year or two! :-) Cheers

  • @manusholm3536
    @manusholm3536 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    that the man, just need enough shackles engaged on the jipsy at any time. you can do the same thing on the trailing side. will work the same and less tension on the roller. just get enough engagement.
    the angle does not matter. at all. the jipsy is round . only thing is how many links you catch

    You should after you get what rebuilding done your gonna do have rino liner sprayed on the I side of the chain locker it's a rubberized spray that dries in the solid sheet of rubber it's made for truck bed liners the stuff is bulletproof you can beat it with sledgehammers and it willnot come apart they just bounce off

    Nothing wrong with that roller solution. Seen something like it rolling 24/7 for over 50 years. Maybe make a wide roller for the chain to pass over instead of rubbing on that bit of wood at the edge of the chain locker. MacGyver was a sailor and Murphy was an optimist.
