@@tressteleg1 Yes you are awesome for doing this, and I'm sure there are more people that like it too, but they just don't make the comment, just know it is very worth it, and I am so grateful for you doing that...!
Love this footage! I love coming to Melbourne and riding the Trams! My favourite city to visit and I'm due back down there soon! Keep them coming! Also my favourite tram is the "B" class ...nice proportions and great to ride in. Cheers Gregg .
I know how far. I have visited your country several times since 1975 when I first took movie film there, video after that. Anyway, let’s hope you get here again one day. If you do, don’t miss my local Gold Coast tram.
Compared to Boston's MTA trolley system Melbourne stops seem every 100 feet. :) Makes it much more convenient for passengers but takes the rapid out of rapid transit. Still, a wonderful trip through the city. PS I love the color [colour] scheme of these trolleys. Quite pretty.
Some stop spacings are a bit close in the suburbs, but especially in some areas like the Toorak end of the 58, wealthy residents complain if their stop is removed. In the offpeak and with a frequency of around every 10 minutes here and there stops are bypassed because nobody wants to get on and off. Additionally drivers are obliged to exactly follow the timetable times, especially in regard to running more than one minute early so have to ‘drag the road’ to slow down. In street running, you can’t exactly stop where you like to wait for the clock. As for Boston, one evening maybe 7pm there was a long wait for a Trolley and when it came, it was two coupled with a person in the second one just to check tickets. It would have cost absolutely nothing extra to run the cars separately and halve the wait between services. So all systems have woolly thinking at times. 😊
TheGoldTitan Quite simple really. The tram puts out a radio signal which is detected by a wire loop in the road like how traffic lights detect cars. When the lights end one phase but before the next phase starts, a white T light appears for 7 seconds for the tram. The driver moves off and even if the T light goes out before the tram is across the intersection, that does not matter. Normally during these 7 second lights, no other traffic is moving.
@@tressteleg1 Thanks for the explanation. That sounds quite simple to implement, I wonder why it is not used on more intersections. Do you think it saves a lot of time?
TheGoldTitan Traffic light programmers tend to be arrogant kings who refuse to be told anything and in Melbourne to date nobody has forced them to give trams absolute priority.
I was following this trip on google maps and a little confused at turn from Flinders Ln (at 6:07). The video says "turn into Flinders St" which confused me as both these roads are parallel (according to google maps). Is this actually William St? Tnx :)
I just watched the section of the video and the wording is all correct. Flinders Street is parallel to Flinders Lane. The tram goes under the railway, across Flinders Street with the other tram lines into the start of Market Street then does the left turn into Flinders Lane and then the right turn into William Street. Maybe you are getting a little confused by the green words which are the name of the approaching tram stop, and are often in another street different from the name of the tram stop.
@@tressteleg1 Thanks for that. As you may have guessed, I am not a native of Melbourne (I am in Perth FWIW). Last year I had to navigate public transport in Sydney for the company I work for. I was putting myself in the position of a newbie learning the routes which I had to do last year. I've always had a soft spot for Melbourne and thanks for sharing your exploits with us :)
I must apologise. The wording on the video IS WRONG naming the right turn as into Flinders St whereas it certainly is into William St. it used to be possible to add a caption to existing videos but TH-cam took that away a few years ago. I’ll blame the mistake on a ‘Seniors Moment’ 😊
Yes I noticed that. Around 1990 while driving for South Melbourne I used to occasionally to do a City Short run in the afternoon peak between Dudley St siding and Domain Rd. At least once I had to park a B class there to ‘get it out of the way’ for 10 or so minutes. But if no timetabled service uses it now, it would just be a useful dumping spot for a dud tram to sit till taken away.
It is when old people make some silly little mistake so we use the excuse that as an old person that is an OK excuse. I’m sure your grandparents can tell you all about it 😄
Melbourne Australia. It is a combination of Route 8 Toorak and Route 55 West Coburg except instead of turning right to West Coburg this tram continues along the 59 for a few km to reach Essendon Depot. See map. static.ptv.vic.gov.au/siteassets/PDFs/Maps/Network-maps/Tram-Network.pdf
Notice that it is going to Essendon DEPOT. Any destination ending in d is going to a depot, not the usual end of the line. If the route number ends in a, it is also not going to the usual terminus but reversing somewhere sooner, usually.
I did not record the tram number. Even if I did, I would tell it to anybody as protecting the anonymity of the driver comes above all else. That is why I am vague about the exact date.
It means the tram is only going halfway. For an example this tram is only if it goes to Orrong road then it turns around and go back to West Coburg or Essendon tram depot.
There is no point redoing what I have already done, and I can’t think of any radical changes that would justify a new video although they are doing trackwork from the Flemington Road end of the park to the zoo at the moment. I’m sure others have walked through the park and taken TH-cam views more recently.
Thank you also for naming the streets you are turning onto, as well as the cross streets, very helpful indeed! Great video, thank you so much!

Please upload more tram videos which crossing the city
I’ll probably do the second half of the 75 on Friday week.
Did that woman on Flemington road, in the end caught the tram in front ? I think she did :)
No. She eventually wandered across Flemington Rd to the right.

Which depot does 3518 base from
Malvern tram depot
What's the difference between route 58 &route 58d

Because of peak hour
Yes, in fact after the peak hour.
What was the number of the tram

Can u upload the full route 1 & 57
The 1 northbound is already there in Parts 1 and 2. Check TH-cam for ‘Driver’s View Tram 1
Tram 57 has been recorded but not yet processed.
Can u do airport west tram video
Already done. To find other routes you may want check TH-cam for Driver’s View Tram 59 (or whatever number you want).
Does 58a mean depot
I believe all the D1 class trams normally live at Malvern.
