"... like clockwork, I immediately found a guitar i can't afford..."
Us too Tyler.... us too.
I misread the 5 in the price tag as the dollar sign at first. :(
They are all too expensive but we buy them anyway. I have never regretted the purchase of a guitar from a money standpoint, I DO regret it when it turns out not to bond with me. But that also opens the door of opportunity to trade for something else on your "lust list". I try to keep the count down to the number of wall hooks. Does not always work out.......
IF I loose a few bucks I just look at it as rent on the instrument for a bit. They almost always get improved in my hands so good deal for following owner. At least a full setup, fret level and crown, nut and saddle height/intonation, maybe more if needed.
You can totally hear the difference between the two Super D guitars. The one with the rosewood back and sides has a warm tone, while the Koa is more crisp and has a ring to it. Both have great tone and volume, but I prefer the Koa.
I volunteer at the Musical Instrument Museum. If you're ever in Phoenix, hit me up and give you the grand tour. You'd love our Martin display. Okay, you'd love the whole rest of the museum as well.
Came here to say the same and saw your comment. The Rosewood had a slightly warmer tone. Love them both.
Those two were my favorites as well. Not sure which one I'd buy.
exactly. i immediately fell in love when that koa guitar when i heard it😂
was gonna say the exact same thing when I saw your comment. I do prefer the warmness of the rosewood over the sparkle of the Koa though. Maybe that's why I bought a d-18 with rosewood back and sides lol.
Me too, the koa was my favourite
I bought a Martin Custom Shop 00-18H over 10 years ago and never looked back. It's such a fantastic guitar and the sound has aged wonderfully.
The Rosewood Super D in this video sounds pretty fantastic as well!
Tylers genuine love of guitar and his ability to entertain is amazing. Thanks man. 😊
You are correct when you say D-18 is the original dreadnought. Perfect.
The GPCE INCEPTION! Hands down. You can hear every note distinctly with clarity. It has plenty of bark plus attitude with the right amount of twang and projection for most genres.
Love this one too - I though it really stood out which is saying something
I liked that one the most, too
The Inception is an amazing instrument. Artistically beautiful with a unique tone & style all its own.
I have a GPCPA4R, which is of course quite different, but still that GPC, and spruce top. I think the calrity at least in part, is a result of the construction, because it's the same. It is incredible for recording, because it has this piano-like quality, where every single note is clearly defined in a complex chord
Thank you for blending each guitars' tone!!
I bought a J-40-M 30 years ago while travelling through the USA. Last year I had the neck reset. I still feel joy every time I open the case.
The Custom Shop Super D with rosewood had a warmer (more mid range) tone than the Koa. Really interesting to hear the tone differences among all the models.
Koa had a bit more higher registers too- more punch
Thanks for the demo of these high end acoustics, ❤ them all cheers.
Wonderful video. Thanks! Peace
Another good video as always!
They all sound great!!!
When I get my first acoustic guitar it will be a Martin. I'm really digging the grey one you featured bc I love that it has a different look. Really Enjoyed the video
Great playing. I just got a Martin HD28E all I may say is a big Wow. It’s such craftsmanship is amazing and sounds great, let’s see how it sounds next year after playing. Like your videos.
As an acoustic player myself, it’s nice to see you do some videos on acoustics. I’ve always loved Martin’s which actually led to me finding my Collings OM2H. Great content as always
Collings is the real deal. Congratulations.
@@BulldoggerJK Thank you!
The Inception and CEO7 sounds stand out for some reason? Really cool video Tyler!
🤘👽🤘
I remember going in to a guitar store in Dublin over 30 years ago to look for an acoustic, couldn't afford a Martin guitar but played a couple of them in the store. Just couldn't believe how great they were, played another one some place else, again, great. Fantastic instruments, other brands don't come close in consistent quality. Best acoustics out there, IMO. Great channel.
Great video. To me, koa is brighter and rosewood is warmer. Both sound great!
The Inception caught my ears and eyes.
@musiciswin just heard your music, loved zero 3 5
I just bought a D-28 and it was shipped from the Nashville store! I love it
The way those "sofa guitars" were resonating is out of this world!
Yup. My first guitar was a Martin. Still have it and play it. It’s a cheap X series. Got it before they were made in Mexico. It’s a great first guitar, IMO.
Rosewood Super D amzing so was the D 28 I own a D10 E and love it
For some reason lately om guitars ive been drawn to. Those om's sounded great! Will have my first om guitar friday!
Awesome! I have the Martin OMJM and I loveeeee it
I have an old ARIA Guitar I got years ago. Love it. Although it’s a cheep guitar.
I have a Sunburst DJR-10E and absolutely love it.
That HD12-28 ... holy shit. Was only half listening as I was doing something else but that sound had me instantly attentive
Oh yeah! It immediately sounds different from all of the rest and has such a clear and unique tone.
Great video, and it's about time you have a Martin in your stable... I would have to go with the cutaway Martin behind you in your right... I'm that guy who had to be and to reach those high notes even on an acoustic, silly rabbit that I am! Oh... and Happy Easter)!! 😎🤘🎸🐇
That CEO-7 was amazing. All that beautiful sound coming out of a 00 size guitar. Ok, I confess, I have a CEO-7 and it really is an amazing guitar.
In my opinion when it comes to Martin guitars, I think that an OM has the most balanced tone. That JM model had a killer tone for a new guitar. Thank you for the quick demo. Great playing as always!
I agree, that particular OM sounded the best to my ears. The ceo-7 is an awesome guitar too, but it really shines more with fingerpicking as opposed to strumming
i love the sound of a good acoustic guitar
That CEO-7 is AMAZING.
I have a low-end Martin. Road Series. Absolutely the best guitar I have ever played. Got it used for $420 a few years ago. Needed some work. Had high action and needed to be humidified. I shaved some off the saddle. Sounds great. Stays in tune.
Love my Martin, probably my favorite guitar I own and it wasn't even an expensive one! That John Mayer Martin one sounded absolutely fantastic, the Custom Shop Super D's both did too. Love a Martin guitar and to me they are just the perfect example of the sound that comes to my mind when someone says acoustic guitar.
Before I got my Martin X-series, I A/B’d it with Taylors, Epi’s, Takamines and always came back to the Martin. It’s not a thousand guitar, but neither is my playing 😊 but I love it.
yes, the d-18 is my favorite martin...so that's why i got the Gruhn Spec D-18 with Adirondack Spruce and Sinker Mahogany...absolutely devine!
I bought my first Martin 4 weeks ago. 00-18. It's fantastic in every way. Should have got one 30 years ago.
K.Yairi. He blew the Martin men away.
I get the sentiment in the videoo 100%
The same feeling you describe happens to me every time I picked up a Yamaha Transaccoustic
Now I own 3 Yamaha guitars... they may not be the most well known brand or the most sought after,
but I challenge everyone to try one of the Transaccoustics without grinning from ear to ear.
2 things I look for in acoustics, maple bodies with natural finish, and large dreads or jumbos, I'm 6 feet 5. I've had a few Martin's they are always great
At a jam session a few years ago a guy had a Martin, forget the model. He asked me if I wanted to try it. Incredible experience! It was so easy to play and tone to die for! Once, I will own a Martin, just not today.
I have had my 000-16 streetmaster (adi and rosewood) for about a year - my favorite guitar of all I've owned ( my first Martin)....right size, right sound, right playability ...right price...
got it at Gruhn's in Nashville (one of the stores in this video)....nice folks....gave me a good deal on my trade in.
you got style dude
CEO7 had best looking fretboard.
Super D Koa had best tones but I am currently playing a D35. Pretty similar to mine.
OMJM: not a fan of the gray burst top but it does sound great.
Not too many acoustics I have seen that I like a sunburst finish on, especially if odd colors. The exception is the brown sunburst over koa or ovangkol like a few Martins and Taylors have done. It was the reason I chose a J50 Gibson over a J45 some years back. As a kid my first guitar was a Framus Texan 12 string with sunburst. I sanded it off and refinished it in clear. The J50 came next and I still have it over 50 years later.
It wasn't so obvious for me, but.... I'd say the Mayer OM. All of them sound great! Of course you could make a broom stick guitar sound great.
Just did my own shoot out a month ago…..walked in thinking Martin but walked out with a Taylor. Still love my Martin just really keen on the Taylor neck profile and tone to price point.
The Koa Super Dreadnought was brighter than the Rosewood model to my ears. My favorite one of them was the CEO-7, I liked the midrange ‘honk’ that it has. I’m also a fan of the Martin SC-13, I’ve played many Martin guitars in my life, but I’ve never played a bad one.
I started on a Martin M-36 years ago, then put the Martin into storage and bought an Alvarez-Yairi with minor cosmetic damage as a 'beater' for taking onboard ships (I was in the Navy). A few years later, I pulled the Martin out of storage and hated it. The neck was way clubby compared to the A-Y. Sold the M-36 to a C&W player in Hawaii and took the A-Y on several deployments. To this day, the A-Y has the best neck of any guitar I've ever played, acoustic or electric. As for these guitars, the Inception all the way.
If you want a treat, go to the Martin Factory. That's an amazing trip!
Dude, that scar looks awesome!
just got martin j40 and love it ❤❤❤❤
The super D in rosewood is definitely chimier/more resonant than the koa. Both awesome and beautiful guitars.
Still the best Martin I’ve played and going to buy is the D-28 Modern Deluxe. Everything about it, for me, was perfect. From the sound, volume, and playability. It was perfect.
Get one from the 1960s sound really is a lot better than the new Martins D28
My newest and my clear favorite is an OM-28 Modern Deluxe. Most of my time is playing the OM and my CEO-7. The HD-28 has to endure its loneliness while hanging on the wall looking jealous.
I bought a 2014 D 18 with the forward shifted bracing slim neck and butter bean tuners. It’s my fav after my boutique luthier guitar Great for alt tunings / fingerstyle playing Some aspects it plays better Great buy at $1900
The Custom Shop Super D's sound so good!
Hey man! I am in Tennessee and live in Maryland, my local guitar shop is Island music, so I have been watching for a while! I am heading to a guitar shop tomorrow, on my anniversary. I would love to meet up and just jam with you at the shop! Let me know if you would be interested!
Thanks for playing them back to back . Its truly amazing how different the same body styles can sound. I wanted a new Martin back in 2011. I played 38 different D-18, D-28, D-35 before finally finding the exact tone/sound I was looking for. My son in law was with me and was beginning to think maybe I was crazy, but then they brought out an HD-28V . I strummed a chord and that was it. My son in law loudly said whow that one sounds different than the rest . He was exactly right and it what I was looking for and I bought it. Guess my point is, play as many as you can before choosing one. They are all 💯 amazing but one will completely capture you and you will belong to that guitar. 😂
PS; that John Mayer OM is a tone beast.
I have a "cheap" Martin, and it's still the second-most expensive guitar I've ever bought, and the third-most expensive guitar I've ever owned. To put that in perspective, the most expensive guitar I've ever owned was a gift, a Gibson Les Paul Studio, $1200. The most expensive guitar I've ever bought was a Chapman Ghost Fret Pro, $1000. My Martin (not sure of the model, but it's one of their cheaper guitars) was $900. Despite being in their cheaper line, it's still my favorite acoustic guitar I've ever owned, and likely ever played. I LOVE that guitar. I've had two Takamines and a Mitchel, my mom has an Ovation and one of those Esteban guitars. That "cheap" Martin blows all of them away. Yeah, we're po-folk; $1000 is a lot of money to us.
No 000's? You missed out. The 00015 and 00016's sound is all to their own....warm and full. Solid mahogany from top to bottom. They fit into your body when you play like no other....and so light.
Rosewood warmer sound, but they both same as good, overall they all sound beautiful, of course its Tyler playing though, thanks for the vid, its very helpful, been looking at martins lately over taylors i might have to go take a look myself
Try the Alvarez Master Works series. You won’t be disappointed!
I have an LX1E "Little Martin." It's fun. Sounds good. Gets loud. Stays in tune. Plays easily while sitting in various comfy chairs. I dig it.
Sold my Little Martin years ago, still regret it. The heavy neck wasn't my favorite, but i do miss it
I must admit that I am in the "yes but for the money you can get an Alvarez or a Yamaha that is at least as good" but I fear I will have to scratch that Martin itch one day .... doesn't help that I live within 30m of the Martin factory .....
Gorra love that Martin thump ....
The new Masterworks series has that Martin thump. Alvarez guitars are awesome too!
I liked the Inception, followed by the Koa Super D, then the Streetmaster. Awesome guitars.
I had a D-18. Sure do wish I still had it but bills had to be paid. Great video by the way.
I remember buying my first acoustic guitar. Martin and Taylor were, pun included, neck and neck but I went with the Martin
I found 2 classical guitars I could not afford: I played both of them, then I bought both of them....The rest is history because I liked the sound quality and, how balanced they were. I can reveal one of the names: "Cordoba" Custom left handed model, yes I'm left handed guitar player. I never blinked an eye because I already played both of them over the last 15 plus years, the longer I play them, the greater the sound. The main thing is this: I know I'll get many years of playability with my 2 selected classical left handed guitars. If you know what your looking for, don't be afraid to pay the price, as long as it fits your needs and, comfort. I've played guitar since I was 7 years old, I'm now already 62, I'm not a star but, I will pay for what I want because it fits me.
I’ve owned several Martin guitars, they are great guitars…..consistently great! I don’t know about that. My choice for consistent quality and tone is Aussie made Maton, Cole Clark and Fenech guitars.
Nothing compares to that new Martin smell!
Recently brought a D 19 it's a beautiful sounding guitar
I’m a Martin nerd, Iv got 4 of them 😅 all are amazing yet so different.
I really like the tone on the John Mayer model
Those Super D’s were both my favorite. And you can tell the difference.
got a 71 d35 love it
I got a 1947 Martin which I love. Not the easiest neck to play, but the sound is awesome.
Tyler, I'm surprised you didn't end up buying one.
Or did you?... 🤔
I love the D18
Man I love them all, but there is something about the koa for me. I know so many people get on a vintage kick, and that cuts koa out for them, and they go with mahogany, but I would love to see something like a authentic made in koa.
I have one of their high-pressure laminate acoustics that I got for $600 years ago, that while is one of their cheaper ones (they're made out of pressed sawdust lol), it stays in perfect tune all the time, and sounds decent despite its smaller size.
I’ve been eyeing down Martins… Sheeet.
Guitar number one and four because I like the acoustic Ness of them
I like Martin, although I am personally more of a Taylor guy. But it does amaze me that Martin is somehow still family run after all these years
Now you just need to make a video similar to this with other brands. Just to see how they all can compare. Taylors, PRS,Gibson,Fender,Ibanez... please❤
Koa usually will always be alittle brighter / glassy. I like the EIR in this example and specific to the model guitars being parlayed. Sounds great non the less. Oh Btw NEON playing it relaxed as possible returning few times makes the difference but such a hard tune =)
I know they can be hard to get a hold of in the US and Canada but if you haven't played Maton I highly recommend you don't count it out.
Much love from Australia 🦘 😊
I had a martin. Had to sell it to be able to move. My question is what is your favorite kind of pick ? I use dunlop nylon 73mm
that john mayer signature with the englemann spruce was bonkers.
Forget the price tag . It's what feels right to you.
Whatever ability.
I spent many years playing all the other brands that were more affordable. Winning a songwriting competition landed me my first Martin. I now have 4 of them. Including a 50 year old D-35. Martin is the best as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve got a 1939 authentic aged it’s awesome
The reimagined series of Martins (the newer ones) are beautiful feeling and sounding guitars. The new thinner neck carve is better than any other acoustic brand IMO.
I prefer the D18 to the other Martin’s too. It’s a very sweet sounding guitar compared to the 28 which is much boomier and striking - probably perfect for a bluegrass band where you want to be heard amongst other guitarists, but not for solo playing (IMO).
Maaaaaaartin!!! Start sponsoring, what the heck?!
I want a guitar from you Tyler 🤘👍🏻 just my dream xixixi
The John Mayer sounded muted a bit compared to the rest. I liked the sound of the Inception, seemed brighter. Both Super Ds had great overall sound for high, low, and midrange tones. Then the CEO-7 came across small in its sound (much like its size). That’s all according to my ears, anyway. Maybe I need to get them checked? 🤔
I love the necks on my 70s D-28 and D-18 perfect for my hand. The width and fret combo fits my style of playing. I had a new 000-28 and I found it very bright. Guess I was used to a broken in acoustic sound wise. Beautiful guitar but don’t have another 30-50 yrs to break it in properly so sold it. Brazilian rosewood commanding such a premium still boggles my mind. I’ve had both on vintage guitars and to be honest don’t find it that much different than a good Indian rosewood. I’m not sure but if it’s Honduran wouldn’t it be almost the same thing? Maybe my ears just aren’t that nuanced. Anyone find that? The differential price wise is crazy. I know it’s really limited and getting a license of some sort is probably difficult but I’ve seen the non Brazilian version of a guitar go for say 10k and the Brazilian 30k. Another great video though. Thanks 👍
Tyler the Custom Shop Super D series has been discontinued, turns out it didn't sell well enough. It's too bad that you didn't get to play one of the D-18 Authentic 1939 models, those sold well enough to be produced for ten years from 2013 to 2023. I like the HD12-28 but I've always been partial to the sound of a 12 string. Thanks for including that 12 string in your test!
You should just have Robert come do a video with that guitar! 🤘
I own a Super D with rosewood back and sides. Wonderful tone, but it’s really big. I am 6’5” so for me it’s ok. Best to play one first. Beast with great tone. It sounds much better than my Gibson SJ200.
Super Ds tone is insane
