    For the L flashlight, have you updated the bulb to a LED? You would find the power drain is so much reduced. They make AA battery LED L flashlights now. I am not saying which is better. I am just saying, like other things, we can update our gear. On the 'hawk, some 550 cord and a few pieces of 100mph tape, you can fashion a test holder. Try it with a Camelback bladder so the draw is by reaching over your non sling shoulder. I like the lighter hawk. I also carry an old K-bar in an old navy fibertype (ridged) scabbard. No vision of Mel Gibson here, I just like both types of tools. I also have a hand trowel to dig cat holes in the bigger deployment pack. It is a cheap plastic type with some paint ot cover the orange color. While I like the old E tool, don't need it as I would be digging a hasty fighting hole at the most. Thanks for your videos. • @patrickoneill6821
    @patrickoneill6821 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    The whole vest vs suspender debate depends on how you see yourself operating. If you are going to operate in vehicles or aircraft then vest is great. If patrolling as light infantry, lots of time in the prone. Spending time in a hide site or surveillance site than a harness or suspenders will work better. I liked that I could sleep with one arm through my harness. My 2 cents

    • @TheRevoltingMan
      @TheRevoltingMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's an interesting take. The prone issue is kind a variable though. If those mag pouches are just a little forward then they greatly hamper being in the prone.

    Nice, I run the LBV as a minute man setup as well. If I have to grab and go for a short term event, I dont want my expensive stuff taken by the police afterwards. You can fit twenty round mags in the grenade pouches. Ammo, water, cliff bars, and a blowout kit is what I run on mine. I keep it attatched to a riggers belt with a 3 liter water bladder on the back, and a universal pistol pouch so I can drop whatever is handy at the time into it.

    Have that same LBV88 put together as a neighborhood defense rig. The CFP90 assault pack attaches nicely to it along with the Woodland Butt Pack below it. In the grenade pouches, I keep a set of mini binoculars and Lowes waterproof notepad in one, the other holds a old german surplus smoke grenade. Only real complaint is that it gets hot during the summer, I much more enjoy my H-Harness with updated magazine pouches and padded pistol belt.

    Looks like a much more serviceable system for you but where do you put your morale patches lol? I use the Condor MOPC plate carrier with CATI AR500 plates. Initially I'll run it slick with only an IFAK (tear away design) attached at this point. It allows me to wear it somewhat discreetly under a simple windbreaker. I expect an SHTF event to be a series of evolutions and my system will evolve as the need and circumstances dictate as I have quite a bit of MOLLE gear to attach if and when needed.

    Not sure why you would think referring to being a minuteman as stolen valor? I have been in the modern militia movement since before Waco ( and in fact, was one of the first that I know off to suggest that we needed to organize as such back in that time period, and muster and respond about what was going on at Waco), and have never heard that it was some select group of people. Anybody that is ready to respond in a fast direct and timely manner to some threat, either local, regional or national, but certainly expediently on a local level, is a minuteman. Or would you suggest we wait for some command structure to call muster to respond to some immediate threat like brigands having their way with some of our neighbors or hostile forces coming ashore as an advanced party to an invasion?

    • @TheRevoltingMan

    We were issued LBVs before going over to Kuwait in 2004. We were told he had to wear the LBV over our Body Armor which we thought was stupid because the Armor carrier had all the Mollie on it in order to mount pouches.
    The catch was, we had to buy our own mag pouches at the time. Some just used the old mag pouches with the clips. In short, we didn't use the LBV at all during our deployment to Kuwait and Iraq.

    • @TheRevoltingMan
      @TheRevoltingMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRevoltingMan We were issued Alice style gear and got the Armor carriers in Kuwait. I use the modern MOLLE LBV vest for my minuteman setup, with all that webbing I can arrange pouches to my specific taste and they are about as inexpensive as the generation before. The only downside is that just like batteries, pouches are sold separately.

  • @styrkarjakel7507
    @styrkarjakel7507 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What you remember in the service was the LBV-88. Had 4 magazine pouches that went straight across the chest. This is the LBV-88E. I really like the shoulder-holster like arrangement of the magazines. Only downside is that with the suspenders, I used to like to wear my pistol in a tanker holster, and with a setup like that, it has to go on the hip.
    Grenade pouches -- put your Lensatic compass in one and compression bandage in the other.
    See those big straps that go across the shoulder pads toward the top? Those are for holding the straps on the ALICE pack. They didn't have sternum straps and the pack straps will slide right off those big ol' shoulder pads.
    Only downside to these rigs is that they were designed for GI gear. If you ever go to PMAGs, Gen 1 usually fit in the pouches, Gen 2 may not, and Gen 3 and H&K mags won't fit at all. These didn't exist back then and were not considered in the design.
    BTW, if you ever have to fight with the 'hawk, the Trail Hawk is the far better choice. If this is a Minuteman Rig, then I'd keep the Trail Hawk with it, if not on it.

    Seems like several large layers of fabric covering a lot of skin area = good way to prevent sweat from wicking away body heat.
    That’s one big advantage to ALICE, the straps aren’t excessively wide and unbuckling the belt helps with heat control.
    Maybe I’m wrong though, never used the LBV in the field.

    Have you given any thought to body armor? I have had good success with spartan armor steel plates and sentinel plate carrier. I don't run a "war belt" though. I don't like a ton around my waist, just a normal riggers belt with a 357, a couple speed loaders, a fixed blade, a leatherman, and a TQ, that is it on my belt.

    TRM,
    I'm confused and conflicted about this issue. I'm not even sure what my goals should be about gear choices, especially packs, battle belts, vests, and armor.
    I personally seem to be wanting something to do it all and I am having trouble getting past that. I want a huge bug-out backpack AND a get-home-bag AND an assault-pack/battle-belt AND an every-day carry kit. AND I want it all modular. AND I want it all concealed carry and grey-man. (worse, I want to do all that with my present backpacking/hiking gear, LOL). Should I change my goals, or just get over it? Or compromise? Or what?
    Presently, I'm using a 24 inch duffle with carrying strap as my get-home bag and planning on throwing that on my (smallish) packframe along with some back-packing gear. That leaves no room for a battle belt or assault pack. So that doesn't really work.
    Yet I don't particularly like the molly-gear approach either (which, realistically, seems the best approach but, if so what are the best SPECIFIC choices in that regard?). Would it be better or worse to get a good-but-huge external pack-frame-based bag and just put the other bags in it and jettison the extraneous stuff if a fight seems imminent? (I've got some large military-surplus duffles with shoulder straps).
    I'm so confused.

    I believe non infantry training school back then was MCT (Marine Combat Training). I was in Marine Infantry from (97 -01) so I went to SOI and Weapons Training. In the fleet we used the LBV.
    I would put the LBV against any new chest rig out there. We used the LBV over the flak and without depending on what type mission we were conducting. Kind of the same principle as the TAP (Tactical Assault Panel) system. You can mount the TAP panel to your plate carrier and then remove it to use like a chest rig.

      Body armor is nice to have but in the modern military they ride into battle. In the militia if you road March 20-30 miles to a battle scene your body armor is probably going to be laying in a ditch somewhere and enroute or your going to be to fatigued to fight.
      Edit: I forgot to add that body armor for the militia in my opinion works best in the defense position or base camp area.

    I use similar for hiking. But I got away from 1. The bumpack 2. Nato bottle holders.
    I use MTP British 58 pattern bottles and pouches. I put them on a molle converters to Alice. Still use a H harness. Simple reason is on hot days less coverage less heat trapped.
    Rangeroll. Never use it. I made my own pouch sits on top of water bottle pouches attached to H harness. I can still put a full sized pack on if need be. That pouch has drybag 3 season down bag, 3x3m tarp, cordage. And wet weather gear. Some of that goes in pack If I take one.
    Food. Not MRE. Porridge n tuna n rice and dehydrated peas 2oz soy sauce. I can get 5 days in 1 pouch if rice is uncooked. Or 2 if I take Uncle bens rice sachets cooked.
    Im over backpacks tbh. I keep it light.as. I can throw a tomohawk between pouch and H harness. A knife between pouches. I carry 4 to 7 waterbottle pouches depends on season. For eg cold weather top (Norgie) fits in on pouch with merino longjohns for sleeping and head torch. Summer, that pouch is off.
    British packs ( Bergens) have a 10 to 15 lt " rocket pouch" zip on side pouch. Takes as much real estate as a issue 3lt camelback. It also has a clip on harness. If you sew on a sleeve at back of rocket pouch viola, bladder pocket. That 12lt pouch is my main pach. As I go on consume eat use it ends up on top of me water bottle pouches all but empty.
    Those water bottle pouches, use a Nato bottle in them you still got room for a hip flask or a bag of Uncle bens pre cooked rice.
    Tbh getting rid of bum pack was the best thing ever. Travel lite freeze a bit at night. But if you go for some civvie gear you can do so much more

I have a molle buttpack and blowout kit attached. And then an extra tourniquet and gauze in the grenade pouches. You could also use the grenade pouches for: snacks, gloves, 20 rd AR mags (sometimes you can fit two), smoke, radio, cellphone, folder knife, pistol mags, etc. you can sometimes find these rigs on EBay for $35-40. They were made for the Militias fighting the Serbs in the Bosnian war and are top notch quality. They fit both AR and AK mags.

    As much as I love ALICE and pre-MOLLE gear in general (I also love MOLLE, btw), I would abandon your kit in favor of a modern plate carrier. You need protection from pistol/rifle rounds, which you have none. Get a modern PALS-webbing adorned plate carrier (and plates, obviously).
    Then mix and match your MOLLE pouches as needed. And then use either an ALICE or MOLLE pack to carry your non-fighting gear.
