Very good tips, but more than anything else I'm amazed by how much thought and effort has to go into something as simple and unnoticeable as a _blink._ Mad respect for you animators, the attention to detail you need to put together convincing and expressive movement (especially in faces like this) is insane.
I loved loved loved this. My lead has been getting me to expand the pupil as I blink (because less light would be reaching it) and then have one adjusting frame as it contracts and shrinks when the light hits it again. Only slightly but it really adds something. Nerdy tips from other animators is like gold! Thanks for sharing
This is what I love about animation. So much variety of expression, and this is just the eyes! It’s all about timing of the expressions. It isn’t just expressions.
What kinds of things would YOU want to see animated in a livestream?? Short exercises, longer ones, get those ideas and requests in!! :) ALSO, some things I didn't remember to do in the stream or mention in the video: There's an arc to inner brow motion- scrunch it in when you bring the brows down! And more importantly, add some asymmetry to the blink motion. The lids can hit at the same frame, but mix up the interpolation a bit to add some texture, so it doesn't FEEL copy-pasted :)
since we are on the topic of eyes maybe animating some Eye Darts would be cool how would you do that without the eye feeling too swimming. kinda like how the eyes will stay still but they do these micro darts, It could happen when a character is in Shock and they just stand there with eye darting, or in a disbelief situation, or it can someone about to go into rage or something. EYE DARTS!!!!
This was awesome Sir Wade!! :D Suggestion for upcoming stream: Transition between mouth shapes (or short lipsync). I personally always struggle with making it look organic, even though I'm aware of some things that help with it (squash and stretch, arcs in the mouth corners, etc), putting it into action is hard haha
Thanks soo much for this I would have loved to see that whole video but defenetly making a tutorial on how to add controllers to an existing rig would be sooo amazing. besides that I never knew so much movement went into making just a simple vanilla blink and imaging all the other variations of a blink like you mentioned makes me wonder what does a sad blink, angry blink, flutter blink, tired blink, what do they all look like!!!! this just get's me excited I want to study all types of blinks now and animate them lol. but Thanks so much for this amazing as always. Also you looked like you shaved or got a hair cut nice look
Hey Wade I love your videos I have been a follower for a few months. Just wondering can I follow along on your tutorials using the 3d program Blender as well? would love to hear back from ya soon. hope your having a good day. :)
Sir is right on that but there are plenty of free rigs for maya out there here is a website that has plenty of great rigs you can choose from animatorsresourcekit.blog/category/assets/rigs/
Is it possible to apply techniques like this in software such as Blender? I know Autodesk is the go-to, but can these tips still be used if someone wanted to use a different software?
I Have a question, I want to join the patreon but it says that to see the streams costs $ 25, but you can only see the recorded version of it even if you are registered for 15 $ ?
Oh that's weird, either I did something wrong or you're looking at a different Replay video maybe. Only the 25 tier has access to the AnimStream Replays, but the 15 tier does have access to Q&A Replays
You know what I hate? When characters blink when they transition to another pose. It’s like *blink* left arm up, *blink* left arm down. It’s so stupid. Watch the kids series “The Deep” it’s is EVERYWHERE in there, and I really, really, hate it

That's a great tip! I was sad after posting this that I hadn't included that detail, since the playblasts were from so close-up!!

What kind of software do you use? And, What Video Software do you use? I am on Window 7...
Hey Wade I love your videos I have been a follower for a few months. Just wondering can I follow along on your tutorials using the 3d program Blender as well? would love to hear back from ya soon. hope your having a good day. :)
Hae sir wade i would love to use some of the characters you use and in the industry how do you get them
The ones in my videos are almost always from Animation Mentor, which you can only get their rigs if you are a student or alumni of their program
Sir is right on that but there are plenty of free rigs for maya out there here is a website that has plenty of great rigs you can choose from
animatorsresourcekit.blog/category/assets/rigs/

Animation principles apply to hand drawn art, 3D, stop motion, etc- software doesn't matter at all!
@@SirWade Awesome!
This is awesome. Can you show us walk-cycles Please. Please. Please :D
Thanks for this. Really insightful. Does this apply to male characters too?
Absolutely!
Blinking too much watching this video 😂
