- How To Create Delete Checkpoints OR Snapshots in Hyper V 2019. This is the 3rd practical video on Microsoft Hyper V series on Windows Server 2019. The Hyper-V checkpoint or snapshot feature allows you to capture the configuration and state of a virtual machine at any point in time, and return a virtual machine to that state without any noticeable interruption. When you take a snapshot of a running VM, Hyper-V briefly pauses the VM to create a new automatic virtual hard disk (i.e- .AVHDX file) and it also makes a copy of the VM configuration file (i.e- .xml), and saves the contents of the VM memory into a file (i.e- .vsv file). Snapshots can also be created when a VM is turned-off.

Excellent video about SCSI controller, Do you have one for IDE? OR simple tips on how to follow the steps for IDE controllers? Thanks.
I love that you went to the hard disk area and inspected the files and provided an explanation. Thank you!
Thanks a lot for your feedback. It means a lot to me.
I did the same work and it works. One query: why the .avhdx files are so smaller in size ?
Hi ! Thanks for your query. As I said into the video that a snapshot file (.avhdx) is the differencing disk/file which is responsible for remembering only the modifications that are made to its parent disk.
P.S- It's an excellent query, you've raised. Thanks man.
Hello Sir, Great Video. Sir, If the VM deleted then can we create the same VM with Snapshot?
Thank you.
Nice video.
And if I'd like to delete the snapshot 1 and assume entire 2? I did that but it seems that the avhdx file is still there.
Hi !! I am not getting your question clearly but still let me guess some points. I understand you have 2 snapshots/checkpoints. Now which one you want to delete? If you delete snapshot 1, it does not always mean that it will delete the .avhdx file too from the saving location.
@@TechAreaNetwork great! That is It! But... After delete the snapshot via Hyper-V management console can I securely delete the avhdx file?
@@DiegoSayron yes you can because by deleting the snapshot from the hyper-v console you are actually making the .avhdx file free to delete or any other management jobs.
Thanks for reverting. Stay tuned.
If I may ask one more; Hyper-V will allow a checkpoint with/without the VM running.
I understand that data is coming/going while running, but does it really matter if you create one while it's running? If stopped, data will change immediately after you create a checkpoint and run again anyway. Thoughts? Thx.
Actually there are 2 types of Checkpoint in Hyper-V. Standard Checkpoints and Production Checkpoints. By default the production checkpoints are enabled. The main difference between these two is data consistancy. The production checkpoints can create a data consistent backup by using Volume Shadow Copy (Windows VMs). This is important for the VMs running Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, or any other application/database which transfers data between different nodes.
Is there a difference between a checkpoint and a snapshot?
No. Both are same. Checkpoint is a Microsoft terminology.
