- This video helps you to export and import Hyper-V virtual machines from one Hyper-V host to another Hyper-V host in Windows Server 2019. This is the 6th practical video on Microsoft Hyper V series on Windows Server 2019.
How an Import process of a Hyper V VM will be handled? You can try any one of the followings:
1) Register the virtual machine in-place: It uses the virtual machine in the folder from where you import it. As the option indicates, the existing virtual machine ID will be same into the 2nd Hyper V Server.
2) Restore the virtual machine: It is nearly the same as the first one, but the virtual machine’s files will be placed in a new location from where it will be run.
3) Copy the virtual machine: It relocates the virtual machine to a location of your choosing like the second option, but a new virtual machine ID will be created. (NOTE: This is the proper option to choose if your plan to create a clone of the source VM. This option will let you concurrently run the new VM and the Old VM both.)

Superb description.. The onscreen server names are very helpful to understand on which server, you are working on. Great job..
Thanks for your feedback.
Nice explanation
Thanks brother..
What about 2012 HV Standard (not R2)? Don't think it will work.
Amazing video .Keep doing ..!
Thanks brother
Can I move the export VM's files using a USB drive and then import the same from the 2nd Physical Hyper V server ?
Yes it is possible. I have done it without any error.
Thanks both of you for the feedback. Now coming to the technical point. Yes, Sandipan Dev, you are right. It should not be a problem if any one copy the exported VM's files over a USB drive and attach it to the 2nd Physical Hyper V server and then import it from that USB drive, it will work exactly the same manner which I have shown here. In my case I did it over the network and you are doing this using a pen drive. No problem. Again thank you guys. Stay tuned.
Is it possible to export and import a virtual machine between 2008 R2 and 2019?
A big thanks for such a great query. You can try by doing below:
Method 1:
A) Export the VM from Windows 2008 r2 and then import it to Windows 2012
B) Windows 2012 to Windows 2012 R2
And so on till Windows 2019.
Method 2:
A) copy the VM's HDD from Windows 2008 r2 to Windows 2019
B) Create a new VM in windows 2019 and attach the old HDD of the VM
Note: I have not got any official documentation from Microsoft in this regard. All the mentioned information are based on my idea.
thank you
