    I remember in my college class (as part of 4500hr apprenticeship) we had to build all the styles of arches as part of our training. We weren’t allowed to use any power tools. No saws or grinders with diamond blades. We had to cut all the Voussoirs with a bolster and hammer. That was tough to do. A few broke and had to redo them again. This was in 85 in Toronto Canada

    That is such excellent work! It's so good that during the review at the end, you're expecting perfection, and you notice the tiniest of differences in the pointing!! This level of skill and attention to detail is so appreciated. Thanks, Stu!

    Nice to see a fellow tradesman who loves pushing the boundaries of their work. We’re a dying breed, most if our apprentices spend every second they can sitting in the van on their phones, which is why I refuse to have one. A real pity for them as I have a lot to teach ☹️

    • @owenjohnson4233
      @owenjohnson4233 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wish I met you 2 years ago I love bricklaying , got laid off my college as the person giving me my apprenticeship couldn’t give me any work.

    • @cerealkiller4248
      @cerealkiller4248 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Owen Johnson If you show a willing to work, there’ll be someone willing to teach. When I did my apprenticeship many years ago, I was fortunate enough to have some really good teachers, guys approaching retirement who had all the patience in the world to help me.
      Offer to work for nothing for a month or two if you have to, just to show people you are keen to learn, and if they can’t offer you work they may know someone who can.
      Good luck.

      The wood is only temporary. Wood forms are built to support the brick, stone. Once the brick or stone are laid and hardened. The wood forms are cut out.

    The very same teqnique that the brickies used to build the glass furnaces at Pilkingtons. They used hardly any mortar inbetween the brick though due to expansion and better sealing. Pilks brickies had to tel contractors not to use so much mortar and on occasion had to take small sections down and rebuild it because of there being too muchbetween the bricks. I have a bench in my old shed made from the wooden lats used to build the crown, it all got skipped after a rebuild. Nice one Stu.

    Across the pond our buildings are built with 2x4 framing. And then we put the skin over it, whether its wood siding, stucco, brick or some other type of finish. So I am struck by how much everything is completely brick/masonry in the UK. Does it have some tie back to the long history of old world masonry, or is for building code strength purposes or what? I find it fascinating and enjoyable. Keep up the good work. Thanks
