I remember a few years ago watching the dark den when it was his flat and he had a couple of shelves with tarantulas, then it went to a whole room with Mishka and it was awesome, seeing it expand to this is pretty surreal I’m so happy for him, and I’m somewhat glad he’s going to reduce the collection a bit, I think it’s a nice step along the journey where it’s almost like thedarkden has cemented his place in the hobby at the top, and he doesn’t need to keep expanding the collection, people love the dark den and petco and it’s been so long we all love the spiders, it’s gonna be more personal In a way

I think it's a good idea to thin out your collection. Because I too miss the old dark den. Your passion is what instantly struck me. By reducing your collection you will have more time to focus on the channel favourites. Maybe we gan get some rehouse too. That geniculata deserves a special enclosure. She has been with us so long and saved up so many times from failed feeding videos. I'm looking forward to seeing you rekindle that passion you had😊

Totally support the decision, as hard as it is, im sure. It will be much better in the end for you and the spooders as well as the new caregivers. Im sure the smiling faces of the new lucky owners will make it all worth it.
It’ll be sad to see them go but it makes sense why, there’s no point in having that many if it means you can’t enjoy any at all. Besides I’m sure they’ll all go to a great home since I’m sure they’ll all end up going to viewers 😁 it’s also funny to see how many people were caught off guard by the title and thumbnail, lol you guys are slacking and missed the last video.

I remember when I first started watching you had just a few. Now, it’s a tarantula empire! Thinning the collection will feel good. Keep up the good work!

The reasoning is the exact thing, why I only have 2 for the longest time I am active in the hobby... meaning for about 10 years now. First it was a question about money. But shortly after I got my second one, I just darw a line there, because I enjoy my two terrariums every day, but I have only so much time to sit there and just admiring the animals... Even 1 or 2 more would mean the hobby is tunring into more maintaining than just 'sitting there, watching'. I appreciate everyone, that has a lot of Ts and enjoy them. But if you dont breed and trade them actively, there is just no reason to have more than 3 or 4... not saying anyone with lots of Ts cannot take proper care, but I would argue as soon as you hit 5 terrariums, its turns more into work, than hobby.
Make sure to check for prohibited species in Germany :) P. metallica (partly all different kinds of Poecilotheria) is / are prohibited in some states of Germany, unfortunately. One of the most beautiful tarantulas, it's a shame.
Pay attention Petko, pokeys are forbidden in some parts of Germany, so be sure they aren't forbidden in the expo part of Germany and in the places where your buyers live!

When we start keeping tarantulas it is so easy to get caught up in the addiction. One will becomes three, three become eight, eight become 10, 10 become 20 and so on. I myself at one time had 50 tarantulas and I finally realized that realistically that was not sustainable. I am currently limiting myself to 18. Which is what I have. I am reminded of something someone told me a long time ago about keeping animals and that is 'when a hobby becomes a chore, it is no longer a hobby.' Life changes and with those changes other sacrifices must be made. So I fully understand why you were trimming things down. I wish you the best of luck. because I know from personal experience that it is not easy.

I had a same thing some where around 12-15 years ago, so I sold all my tarantulas except my G. pulchra. But now I'm interested to coming back to the hobby and just ordered a female OBT!
Yeah i feel this to, i have 62 tarantulas and i have gone full stop on buying anny new ones. My space is limited and now i basically need to grow the ones i have upp to see that i can truly fitt them all at full sice. Also with full time job wife, and 3 kids + some more animals i dont really have ime to just chill and enjoy the tarantulas as i did when the collection was smaller.
On a completley opposite note, i just paired my male L difficilis with my female and the pairing was succesfull and he lived. The kids will be given away for free to a friend that likes to trade/sell tarantulas. i will only keep one or two babys.

My own collection grew to around 300 and it became a chore rather than a pleasure. After 20 odd years of keeping tarantulas and reptiles I sold, or gave away, everything and haven't kept anything for about 10 years. I will go back to it eventually.
It can be difficult to get rid of specimens but just keep in mind how much enjoyment you will be giving another keeper that will truly be able to appreciate these beautiful spiders. Wish I was able to take advantage of this great opportunity to get some beautiful Tarantulas but unfortunately I'm in the US.

The part with the Poecilotheria metallica, is so interesting seeing them hang out on the door and just take the prey and go back to their spot like there is nothing to be afraid of.

well that is the beauty of tarantulas, they dont care, wont know and can be rehoused elsewhere no harm no foul. so saying goodbye is only painful for the seller if they have formed feelings for their pets.

I know exactly how you feel, mate. I have 100s of mantis right now and I spend all my time feeding them and not much time playing with them. Some of them have never been held and that makes me sad.

Would be nice to see some smaller vivarium like enclosures with waterfalls/plants for tarantulas rather than the basic setups that way a smaller amount would look super clean and be fun to look at and maintain rather than just feeding tons quickly.

Passion for hobby is good, but also good to keep limits, or it turns into work and loses its meaning. Different thing if want to do it as work, but nicer to have pets than only collection/merch.. I'm happy with my few Ts, they give so much joy wondering wtf they doing

did you know that both Chilobrachys sp. electric blue and chilobrachys sp. vietnam blue have full scientific names now? the species formerly called chilobrachys vietnam blue is now Chilobrachys dyscolus and only a few weeks ago chilobrachys electric blue is now Chilobrachys natanicharum!

How is the fish tank doing?
I've mostly gotten out of keeping tarantulas and have gotten more into true spiders. Because true spiders have a shorter lifespan they aren't a 30 years commitment and I can go on to keep a different species sooner. I will always keep 1 or 2 tarantulas around though.

Only in some federal states.
But you need a cites paper that they’re not wild caught specimens in order to breed and sell them.

I got rid of any that were considerably pet holes / never see as much as I love all species, even some being beautiful but not worth it for rare sightings. I perfer hardy species you see frequently and few versus many means more attention less actual appreciation for the fact of the nuisance of maintenance. If anything you can feed both frequently and at pace. There beautiful creatures, they aren't Pokémon I dont need to catch them all or own many. I'd rather focus on a handful and spend time actually watching then spending it all feeding.
I still want to make an acrylic coffee table enclosure for my living room with M.Balforui as a communal enclosure. A P.Metallica and a Theraphosa not sure what species of Therphosa yet.

Watching your videos as well as Exotic Lairs helped me get over a lot of my phobia, I now want a turatula but wifey does not allow it... and happy wife life is a thing, so for the longest watching you and you turantulas has been like sharing the experience of having turantulas, and seeing some of them go is like letting go of pet of my own even though it is not mine.

I'd like to know if there is a possibility to buy spiders from you or someone else that can be sent to Norway? I don't really know if we have anyone in my country that breeds them or sell them for pets. And I'm inexperienced, meaning I have never had spiders or handled any. I've learned that there should be a species that one can begin with, and once you get familiar with it and know how to handle them, then you could get other types that are more active. My favourite species is Venezuelan Sun Tiger, because of its colours, but I understand they are too active or aggressive? So, which one would you reccommend?
Nah,I couldn't do it especially with any animal I've had for a year or more.
They are a huge part of my life and I would never have got them no matter how many if I wasn't dead set in keeping them until I die or the earth stops turning .
