Perfect timing as I'm headed out to Lake Huron near the Straits of Mackinac an area that has reefs where all the MI DNR Lake Trout planting goes on in the northern great lakes. I use a flutter spoon with a bead on the hook. I keep the second line ready and if a fish comes up more than once without biting I drop the flutter spoon in and watch the line 100% of the time they hit it on the drop and all you'll see is slack in the line. Have to admit I learned to pull or reel the bait away from lake trout in Higgins Lake. The trout were feeding on smelt huge schools of them we were also fishing. You could see smelt from just under the ice and as far down as you could see. When a trout got near the smelt would go screaming off and if the trout is close the smelt all head in one direction so you know he will be coming in directly from the opposite direction. Never got one to bit until I tried to pull my smelt hook up as I had it on a rod with no reel. Had him for a second or two and learned how to get the buggers to bite. No live fish stays anywhere near a Lake Trout except other big lake trout. Great video very informative and very well presented. If I get any underwater video tomorrow. I'll send you a video. The whitefish are in the same area and a camera makes it so much easier to catch whitefish in deep water.
Sweet! Good luck! This past Saturday was our first slow day on the ice. We got one early and then nothing would move much after that. Seemed to be consistent across the lake. But as we near the end of the season they should things should heat up again.

It is a video that I thought could really help people. I've been doing it for 3 years now and just got skunked for the first time in 3 years yesterday. But even when you get skunked you still get chases that get your hear pumping. I guess I needed a day to bring me back to reality. But when fishing is good you can catch good numbers of fish! When I googled the number you provided it brought me to their fluorocarbon line. The line I have used is a Co-Polymer line linked here. amzn.to/2KsZgnO The reason for Co-Polymer over Fluorocarbon is that it sits on a reel and is more flexible than straight fluoro. However, I would recommend that you check out our update to this video, Advanced Techniques. I actually prefer mono/fluoro for ice fishing. Even on George my GF runs 4lb fluro, and then my buddy cant even get one to the hole even with braid due to a stiff rod and a lack of feeling for how a charging trout is to be hooked up properly lol. We have a video of a day we really got on em at George!
I think a longer, softer rod is important when it comes to lakers... you need a backbone but a soft tip to absorb everything they throw at you! I think that hook set is key though so I actually go braid now with a fluoro leader. We have a ton of laker jigging videos on our channel and an update to this video if you haven't seen it that goes into a ton more detail. Guys... the best way to catch lake trout is definitely soft plastic tubes, nothing compares to them on an active day, last time we had over 10 Lakers in 2 hours
Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes... tubes are one of the top baits! I like swimbaits a little better and have had very good success with them. On an active day you'll do well with both. When they start short striking I go to spoons that have a hook further back... and if they don't want to chase I go to a blade bait to entice a strike. Everything has a place and time. I find if you're not hooking up keep changing things up until you figure them out!
So the first thing would be to watch the videos on how I do the technique.. And then honestly.. go find deep water and give it a shot. I would watch the "How to Find Lake Trout" video as well as this will really help you target likely areas. th-cam.com/video/N1DqojdtifE/w-d-xo.html There are several main access points that will get you to deep water but they will likely be crowded on a weekend.. Million Dollar Beach has a big parking lot but it is a long walk to deep water. Pilot Knob will be very deep water very quickly but it will be super crowded. Hearthstone Campground is a short walk to deep water. Word of caution on Hearthstone... be careful driving down to the water as some people can't make it back up. I would explore a bit away from the crowds and find your own piece of water. Good luck!
I used to fish in shallower water a lot and people around us would catch one once in a while on tip ups. For me there was too much interference from perch and panfish and you can't really tell them apart on the sonar. There is also very little room for a "chase" in shallower water. On Lake George, anything in the 20-40 foot range has too many other fish and far fewer lakers. When we get into deeper water we can mark a lot of lakers in a day and get a lot of chases and bites. I never experienced that in shallower water. One of our other guides does catch a lot of lakers shallow in other lakes but it is usually tied to an alewife die off that draws the lakers in and they are using tip ups. Every lake has its differences though.
Yes, There are times in the fall like the month of October when the big lakers are right up in water 10 to 15 feet deep. They catch them there trolling big plugs like Rapalas, Rebels, Bombers and the like. Try Fort Peck Res near the dam.
@@rodmerasty6034 Yes... I've heard of people using Smelt Oil on the baits in our lakes. I like the paddle tails myself... more realistic looking I think. I haven't used tubes but have heard a lot about people using them.
Salmon are very different from Lakers. Usually if we target salmon we will set tip ups with minnows just under the ice (2-15 feet below the ice). Then we jig for lakers and hope to get a flag on a tip up from a salmon. One thing I've experimented with is Jaw Jackers for salmon. Salmon are famous for dropping a bait the moment there is any tension on the line. You'll get a lot of flags from salmon that way. With a Jaw Jacker it basically sets the hook before the salmon can drop it (although I've had them get away from the jaw jacker too). In terms of big lakers... the biggest I typically see on Lake George is 28-"29". There are a lot of average size (23"-25") lakers and I expect to catch several in a day doing. Salmon... you're lucky if you get one. BTW.. I have a lot of Lake Trout videos on my channel if you have seen them already.

I was fishing million dollar beach yesterday. My friend was on 4 inches up at a place called pauls fathers...he landed 7 lakers. The lakes locked up .this weather that we've had this weekend the real deep should be ready
There is 4 inches on mdb and i didnt dare venture out to far . was just trying to find perch ...and i hear ya on the 70ft depths but i dont think those spots are ready yet.
I usually go out on the other side of dome island...its a big flat .50 to 70 ft ..first ice we can usually put 20 to 30 of them on the ice . but its short lived ..always like 50 single man shantys out there doing the same thing lol but gd luck to you this ice season too my friend!!
It stretches a ton less than mono but still sits well on a spinning reel. Is there something you like better for spinning reels? Always interested in other opinions. Thanks!
White Dog Trail Company I recommend using braid for lakers especially if you’re going deep. I use the black Fireline because it’s didn’t absorb as much water and freeze up. If your fishing from a shack there’s no issue though. I run a 2ft Fluro leader
Fishing with a sonars is simply cheating. Hunting, fishing and gathering has always been done by knowledge and just going out. Line, jig and minnow. No need to get all technical, just enjoy and don’t be too ocd.
To each, his own. I grew up like that for sure. Drilled holes by hand and jigged and moved if I didn't find something. I do love fishing with sonar now though.. makes it a lot of fun for me.
its not cheating its bettering your odds and teaching you what cadence the fish prefers on that given day. seeing what turns them on or off can double your numbers in a day. and the sonar makes it like a video game. as well you can see if something moves in above or below and it enables you to reel up or drop to the fish and work it.
Totally agree! I was out last Saturday and I played with the first fish for over 5 minutes... chasing back and forth, dropping back to the bottom, bringing him back up. I kept changing up what I was doing and finally got him to bite! Nothing is more rewarding that that! Teaser: That's in next weeks video by the way! ;)
Jeremy I am probably more familar with the lake than you relaize and thats fine. You can disagree about the spot burn all you like. When you post on the web you were fishing early ice there I can disagree. Also for not living there I am aware of last years ice conditions and got on anyways and hammered them. While I appreciate the effort that went into this clip...all of these fisheries were stronger before being cast to the public eye constantly.
I appreciate the conversations this has started. From our perspective this video is not at all about a particular body of water and especially not specific spots. It is really about how to jig lake trout. The clips happened to have been taken from Lake George which is why it was in the title. You'll also notice not once did I mention a specific lake in the video as it was really meant to help people target lakers wherever they fished. You will also notice in all of our videos (not just this one) that we release our fish and encourage the practice to help protect fisheries. We are all about education of ethical practices and the protection of fisheries. I think we all care about the same things :) Thanks for all of the input guys.
Sonar definitely gives you the upper hand when jigging for any fish. It's like having eyes under the water. I suppose there is an art to jigging without sonar too. I would be interested in how you do it. I was actually on the ice yesterday.. The lakers were slow and sluggish but I was able to land 5 and missed another that bit twice. I believe that if I didn't have the sonar helping me I would probably not have caught anything but maybe I would have been lucky enough to get one. I get just as excited to see the fish chasing even if they don't bite so even when it is slow it can be fun watching them come up on the sonar. Well that's the problem i dont have sonar. Im looking for tips myself. As far as i can come up with my best bet is to leave my jigs at home and just set a chunk of fish right on the bottom and let it set until something picks it up.
Ahhh... I see. Well you can always set tipups near the bottom in deep water with live or dead bait and that can be very effective. I have heard of people using dead bait and leaving them directly on the bottom but I have never really done this. I used to set tipups but I just find the jigging to be so much more effective, fun and less work than dealing with tipups. You could always set tipups and play around with the jigging while you wait for a flag. If you're chasing lakers and don't have sonar I would drop some sort of minnow imitating bait (with some weight to it) to the bottom and then lift it up off the bottom and move it up and down a bit or even dead stick it (don't move it) for a bit. Every few minutes I would reel it up to the top like a fleeing baitfish starting relatively fast and then slowing down the further it comes up. Don't stop until it is at the hole (they will literally follow it from the bottom and bite right under the hole a lot). Then drop it back down to the bottom and check every once in a while for a bite. Lots of chasers don't bite but will sometimes bite when it comes back down near them. When you get to the bottom just repeat the whole process and feel free to change up what you are doing and experiment. I have had times where I am not seeing anything on the sonar but I do a "chase" anyway and suddenly a laker appears halfway through the chase and eats it. I know sonar can be expensive (it took a lot for me to buy my Vexillar probably 10 years ago) but man it is so worth it whether you are jigging lakers or panfish. Maybe look for a used one or put a message up on iceshanty.com for the state you're in and see if anyone has one they can sell for cheap. I actually am in the market for a good second unit so I can bring more people with me when I go. In the meantime, get out with some tipups and play with the jigging while you wait. Best of luck!
thermal 15 man you should really consider getting a flasher. It will change your life lol. You will see a definite hook up increase. I just use a cheaper one. Don’t need anything fancy.

Yes... that is the key! They don't always respond the way you want but they usually eventually "turn on" and it can be crazy fun!!!

Cool.. What kind of trout (Browns, Rainbows)? I want to do more ice fishing for other trout species (which means I need to find good waters to do it).
Lake trout , I’m lucky to be near lakes with ,rainbow and lakers but lakers are my favourite to fish because of the fight
Tube jigs or paddle tails without bait but if I do have fish scent I’ll spray it on hook for sure
@@rodmerasty6034 Yes... I've heard of people using Smelt Oil on the baits in our lakes. I like the paddle tails myself... more realistic looking I think. I haven't used tubes but have heard a lot about people using them.
What about salmon through the ice? Any big Lakers???
Salmon are very different from Lakers. Usually if we target salmon we will set tip ups with minnows just under the ice (2-15 feet below the ice). Then we jig for lakers and hope to get a flag on a tip up from a salmon. One thing I've experimented with is Jaw Jackers for salmon. Salmon are famous for dropping a bait the moment there is any tension on the line. You'll get a lot of flags from salmon that way. With a Jaw Jacker it basically sets the hook before the salmon can drop it (although I've had them get away from the jaw jacker too). In terms of big lakers... the biggest I typically see on Lake George is 28-"29". There are a lot of average size (23"-25") lakers and I expect to catch several in a day doing. Salmon... you're lucky if you get one.

Spot burning over populated public fishing spots . lol . you guys blow me away. Talking about a lake that holds 1000s of scap lake trout guys. Relax. Now if it was a spot that holds trophy's we wouldn't be having this conversation. Like i said over populated fishing spots .just fishing

I was fishing million dollar beach yesterday. My friend was on 4 inches up at a place called pauls fathers...he landed 7 lakers. The lakes locked up .this weather that we've had this weekend the real deep should be ready
Oh cool! I heard only 2-3" at MDB. How far out could you go? I'm looking for water about 70 feet deep.
There is 4 inches on mdb and i didnt dare venture out to far . was just trying to find perch ...and i hear ya on the 70ft depths but i dont think those spots are ready yet.
I usually go out on the other side of dome island...its a big flat .50 to 70 ft ..first ice we can usually put 20 to 30 of them on the ice . but its short lived ..always like 50 single man shantys out there doing the same thing lol but gd luck to you this ice season too my friend!!

Pline floro clear stretches tremendously. Jeremy Graves nice spot burn dude. Why not tell the entire internet where your buddy was fishing...
It stretches a ton less than mono but still sits well on a spinning reel. Is there something you like better for spinning reels? Always interested in other opinions. Thanks!
Last year was all floro for me. This year braid has done the trick. Both have their place.
I've used (and still use) the lightweight braid on my panfish jig rods but have not on the laker rigs. I may experiment a little this year.

White Dog Trail Company I recommend using braid for lakers especially if you’re going deep. I use the black Fireline because it’s didn’t absorb as much water and freeze up. If your fishing from a shack there’s no issue though. I run a 2ft Fluro leader

Fishing with a sonars is simply cheating. Hunting, fishing and gathering has always been done by knowledge and just going out. Line, jig and minnow. No need to get all technical, just enjoy and don’t be too ocd.
To each, his own. I grew up like that for sure. Drilled holes by hand and jigged and moved if I didn't find something. I do love fishing with sonar now though.. makes it a lot of fun for me.
its not cheating its bettering your odds and teaching you what cadence the fish prefers on that given day. seeing what turns them on or off can double your numbers in a day.
and the sonar makes it like a video game. as well you can see if something moves in above or below and it enables you to reel up or drop to the fish and work it.
Totally agree! I was out last Saturday and I played with the first fish for over 5 minutes... chasing back and forth, dropping back to the bottom, bringing him back up. I kept changing up what I was doing and finally got him to bite! Nothing is more rewarding that that! Teaser: That's in next weeks video by the way! ;)
Jeremy I am probably more familar with the lake than you relaize and thats fine. You can disagree about the spot burn all you like. When you post on the web you were fishing early ice there I can disagree. Also for not living there I am aware of last years ice conditions and got on anyways and hammered them. While I appreciate the effort that went into this clip...all of these fisheries were stronger before being cast to the public eye constantly.
I appreciate the conversations this has started. From our perspective this video is not at all about a particular body of water and especially not specific spots. It is really about how to jig lake trout. The clips happened to have been taken from Lake George which is why it was in the title. You'll also notice not once did I mention a specific lake in the video as it was really meant to help people target lakers wherever they fished. You will also notice in all of our videos (not just this one) that we release our fish and encourage the practice to help protect fisheries. We are all about education of ethical practices and the protection of fisheries. I think we all care about the same things :) Thanks for all of the input guys.

Sonar definitely gives you the upper hand when jigging for any fish. It's like having eyes under the water. I suppose there is an art to jigging without sonar too. I would be interested in how you do it. I was actually on the ice yesterday.. The lakers were slow and sluggish but I was able to land 5 and missed another that bit twice. I believe that if I didn't have the sonar helping me I would probably not have caught anything but maybe I would have been lucky enough to get one. I get just as excited to see the fish chasing even if they don't bite so even when it is slow it can be fun watching them come up on the sonar. Well that's the problem i dont have sonar. Im looking for tips myself. As far as i can come up with my best bet is to leave my jigs at home and just set a chunk of fish right on the bottom and let it set until something picks it up.
Ahhh... I see. Well you can always set tipups near the bottom in deep water with live or dead bait and that can be very effective. I have heard of people using dead bait and leaving them directly on the bottom but I have never really done this. I used to set tipups but I just find the jigging to be so much more effective, fun and less work than dealing with tipups. You could always set tipups and play around with the jigging while you wait for a flag. If you're chasing lakers and don't have sonar I would drop some sort of minnow imitating bait (with some weight to it) to the bottom and then lift it up off the bottom and move it up and down a bit or even dead stick it (don't move it) for a bit. Every few minutes I would reel it up to the top like a fleeing baitfish starting relatively fast and then slowing down the further it comes up. Don't stop until it is at the hole (they will literally follow it from the bottom and bite right under the hole a lot). Then drop it back down to the bottom and check every once in a while for a bite. Lots of chasers don't bite but will sometimes bite when it comes back down near them. When you get to the bottom just repeat the whole process and feel free to change up what you are doing and experiment. I have had times where I am not seeing anything on the sonar but I do a "chase" anyway and suddenly a laker appears halfway through the chase and eats it.
I know sonar can be expensive (it took a lot for me to buy my Vexillar probably 10 years ago) but man it is so worth it whether you are jigging lakers or panfish. Maybe look for a used one or put a message up on iceshanty.com for the state you're in and see if anyone has one they can sell for cheap. I actually am in the market for a good second unit so I can bring more people with me when I go. In the meantime, get out with some tipups and play with the jigging while you wait.

thermal 15 man you should really consider getting a flasher. It will change your life lol. You will see a definite hook up increase. I just use a cheaper one. Don’t need anything fancy.
