- A song commonly sung by Swedish troops before going into battle, was sung often by the soldiers under Gustavus Adolphus during the 30 years war.

English:
A mighty fortress is our God,

I remember singing this song during a moment of devotion during a field exercise in the Finnish military service in the 2000s. Our regiment is Swedish-language, so we sang it in Swedish.

Our long and violent history is truly extraordinary. How did our small country accomplish to conquer such vast amounts of land and defeat so strong armies? Although some of the Finnish troops like Hakkapelita were some of the most elite troops in Swedish history the fact is that most soldiers were from Sweden, and those that were from Finland got the same training and equipment. They weren't some kind of reserve or anything like that, they were Swedish subjects and treated equally.

RIP Gustavus Adolphus, fought for religious freedom from the Catholics. God bless him, his memory and his courage. Separated from his cavalry on the field of battle, he was swarmed by the enemy Catholics and butchered. He is a hero and may he RIP. It is said, that before the battle of Lutzen when this psalm was sung by the assembled Protestant army, after the lines "Du frågar vem han är, han namnet Kristus bär (Dost ask who that may be, Christ Jesus it is he)" the entire Swedish artillery opened fire.
