- so i originally posted this on Reddit but I was not satisfied with the result so I made a new, extended version
also I aint hating on my guy Makoto, I just find Hajime's story pretty fuckin wild

uhhhh... considering danganronpa: goodbye despair is based entirely on lies built upon lies, (made them think that they were just getting to the academy, made hajime think he had a talent because he was there with the ultimates, Chiaki was an AI "traitor", they were in a simulation, no one ever told them the truth without prompting or pointing out the lie, etc), I'd argue that yes, their lives at that point and a lot of what they did were lies
Tbh Makoto and Hajime's lives were also lies; they don't exist.
Imagine learning your love interest was a npc and then learning the school you loved so dearly betrayed you and turned you into a whole different person.

Makoto's lore: *studied two years in Kibougamine until the freaking Apocalypse happened, his family got kidnapped and he decided to recluse himself at Kibougamine, where the mastermind behind the Apocalypse erased his memories. He then saw a lot of deaths and was framed a lot of times, he almost died, he saw the mastermind execute herself, he then got his memories restored, and thus he was able to fully feel the pain and loss of his friends's deaths, then he watched his sister get roped into a plan that wanted to brainwash her into becoming his new archnemesis, then he risked his life for a bunch of brainwashed maniacs because it was the right thing to do, and then got roped up in a SECOND KILLING GAME when he was ON A TRIAL AND SENTENCED TO DEATH for helping out the aforementioned brainwashed maniacs*

To be fair , Hinata's Lore comes Pre-Game while Naegi's Ingame and Postgames
If you think about it , Both are two sides of the same coin..
But if I have to be honest , Naegi lost more than Hinata (to be in a real killing game , watch his former friends die , getting frame from even breath , almost die etc etc)
Hot take: tbh yeah that's why I think bringing the sdr2 cast back was a bad choice. I mean, DR3 as a whole was a mistake, but the game said they MIGHT come back. At the very least, maybe some could come back, but not all? I personally think it'd be interesting if characters the cast liked less (Teru, Komaeda, Mikan, etc) were brought back, but characters like Nidai, Pekoyama, Gundam, etc weren't.
Also, Chiaki wasn't supposed to be a real person lol

Right, at the end of the day the DR2 cast had a second chance while the characters in DR1 remain dead, pretty sad.
Idk hajime lost his best friend, can never live a normal life, was framed for the most despair inducing event, also had to watch his friends die even if it wasn’t real, the teacher that actually cared for him died, and basically everything he loved was crushed and destroyed

@@junkid3559 no for almost all of the duration of Danganronpa 2 we played as Hajime, not Izuru. He was an average person until the final decision and even after that he choose to be Hajime, not Izuru

Just from the game, there is no salient reason to think Hajime is somehow more normal than Makoto. The only event that really drives in Makotos luck is what happens in his execution.
Also, it was only by rejecting Izuru that he was able to achieve his super saiyan form. If he wasn't Izuru at one point, we'd still be seeing the 'They're both hope and despair. A conclusion will fucking never be reached.' Loop.
And ssj Hajime is not more normal than Makoto, dude.

Anyone else remember the time Makoto got taken hostage then drove a bus full of more hostages almost crashing it then 5 seconds later almost murdered the hostage taker with a soda can? Good times
Also I haven't read Danganronpa Zero but doesn't Makoto get targeted by the student council or something?
Yeah In DR Zero he played a bit of a minor role and to keep it spoiler free almost got killed by a student council bodyguard until he was saved by Mukuro and then pretty much exited the story

This is why Hajime to me is my top favorite character in the entire franchise if he was ever to die I’m done with Dangaronpa
I'm seeing a lot of people in the comments saying Makoto suffered more and while it is true that Makoto suffered a lot, that was only during the killing games.
Hajime discovered the murdered corpse of one of his fellow students, was assaulted by security AND was manipulated by the very school he went to BEFORE the killing games! And then he proceeded to suffer more during the killing school trip!
In summary, both have suffered but at least Makoto's suffering was limited to the games, Hajime wasn't as lucky.
Um Makoto almost died in DR0 and in his secret file and was accused of being a traitor in DR3 those were outside of the killing games. Hajime did suffer more via being a lab rat though.
Makoto had to see the world end and gave up any hope on even finding his own family, Pregame Makoto was him at his lowest and even though we don't know much he had given it all up.
Hajime brought back almost all of his friends, but Makoto only brought 1 person back (not to mention him in 2 killing games)
Makato is lucky but he does go through some stuff bc of his luck

I think the issue with Makoto is the fact that they made him TOO average. I get that that's the point of his character, but even Komaru has some quirks and a more flushed character arc. Makoto's definitely my least favorite protag of the series.
