Boyd was both the rise - and the fall of his empire. Chip was a big reason for Boyd’s success. I met Boyd in a business setting, and he was awful. He was an expert at treating people like dirt. If he was nice to you it was only because he wanted something from you - and once he got it, you were dirt. He was extremely ungrateful and considered himself to be a hot rod god. God bless Chip, he was able to move beyond Boyd.

They hit the jackpot with this show, they couldn't have cast a more divisive bunch of trouble makers, bullies, ego maniacs, vacuous people if they tried, continually rescued by the few talented and genuine guys, that never get the recognition they deserve, Duane never got taken down the several steps he deserved, Blue bear was a legend in his own lunchtime

It was an extremely weird show... Duane should have got his comeuppance but he hid behind Boyd. I think the show would have been more interesting had they followed Blue Bear and the other kid that was fired for designing wheels for another company on the side. But also at the same time you've got to figure that they've had an American choppers on for a while at that point and a bunch of other fabrication shows... The last thing anybody wanted to do was turn on another show that was the exactly the same as everything else

Coddington might've made some nice cars, but his business was poorly run. One episode from the show has stuck with me. They had a young guy just hired, he was from Montana, and this other employee known for some reason as "Bluebear" was harassing the new guy mercilessly, basically calling him a sheep-fucker. When the guy complained to the shop boss Duane, rather than warn Bluebear in no uncertain terms to stop Duane told the guy who complained to ignore the abuse. All I could think was the episode could be used as a tutorial in how to NOT handle harassment complaints if you want to avoid a lawsuit. And I'm not sure if the constant deadlines were just a device used for the show to create tension, but it seemed to me asking workers to work long hours under constant pressure because "the big show is next week!" created a less safe work space given the potentially dangerous machinery involved. That's how accidents happen and people lose body parts or lives.

Jo McGee, Boyd's last wife is my cousin. We were like brother and sister growing up. We are still very close. So I had a real inside view of the show. A lot of the friction between people was made up or highlighted. Many times the director would say, That was great but go back in the office and come out again this time be really pissed off. They promoted the arguments. Thought it would make a better show. Boyd was a tough person to get to know. Private and set in his ways. Yes he would over promise on what could be delivered. But felt it needed to be done to stay ahead of competition, and didn't allow time for things to go wrong as they tend to do. He was always under tremendous pressure. Most of it by commitments he made. If he missed commitments those people came at him with a vengeance. Boyd was always good to me and I saw many many times he was relaxed and treated everyone around with respect and smiles. I love my cousin Jo. She is a real sweetheart and has had some real rough patches in life!!! I'm not going to get into any rumors or the Foose thing as I don't have the full story straight from the people directly involved. Wishing everyone smooth roads and a full tank!

The only good thing he did for the industry was his show, it gave exposure to the people who were making him successful and they moved on to become legends on their own.

I thought the show was about how Boyd became a business dictator, hired a mouthy arrogant Forman, got his deadlines to short, and refused to work with any other hot rod shops.
In short, a film about Donald Trump with fans wheels.
Not the complete past history of drag racing and hot rods!
    TMI FOOL!

"the Boyd look, in which everything was shaved with no handles and hinges". Literally every car shown has visible door hinges, even the drawings. 😆

You did not have ti watch long to figure out just how fake everything was
They would build some car for some theoretical "customer" always get it done at the very last minute deliver it to the customer, sometimes make big deal out of it like taking that Mustang to Indy only to see a few episodes later that same car among others sitting in the shop in the background

If I'm not mistaken, Cadzilla was designed by Chip Foose and not Boyd. The reason his shop suffered is because Chip left.

Most of the famous rides from his shop were Foose designs. Both the "Boydsters" were designed by Chip.

Cadzilla was designed by Larry Erickson, design engineer for Cadillac. It was built by Craig Naff, a strong sheet metal fabricator from Virginia.

The show was a strange brew of ex-wife keeping the books, the current wife and the put-upon crew. Boyd would guilt-shame them if they asked for time off from the ridiculous, fake schedule...
