I will most likely never do this project, but wanted to say that you have made what is probably the best instructional video I have ever seen on TH-cam! Clear, concise and professionally done without extraneous chatter or music that interferes with hearing your verbal instructions. Cheers.
After watching this VERY detailed video I am (maybe) two steps from final installation. I am quite the "detective" and researched every single item needed to make my wire hung canopy. Bit by bit, piece by piece I got the best deals on fabric, wire cable and clamps, stainless steel turnbuckles, caribiners, pad eyes, etc. Hours spent measuring, sewing, and only occasional cursing! I was not about to abandon this project and saw it through til the end. I'm beaming with pride and will share a picture to show how it turned out.

The most impressive tutorial I've ever seen. I applaud you. I need what you made and If I owned a machine I'd do this project. I love taking on projects like this but I would think the cost of machine alone would make it impractical to do it myself. Not giving up, I will pursue this project using your instruction and your materials.
Thanks so much! I feel you on the whole machine cost thing; it can be tough. Just take it one step at a time, and you got this! Can’t wait to see what you come up with! However, if you buy a sewing machine that works well you will find yourself making a lot more projects than just the wire hung canopy. Thanks again!!!
This is a great instruction / educational video. A true tradesman who knows his craft, explains in detail without missing a single step or passing on a tip no doubt learned from years of experience. To top it off the video is of high definition, excellently lit and edited with informative close ups and clear, calm precise verbal description. There are SO many TH-cam videos where someone thinks they are some kind of expert because they did a job once, filmed it and got away with average results that are questionably successful. Here is the real deal. I love to see someone who is an expert at what they do, show us how they do it. Thank you for posting :)

I watched your Roman shades and made the best Romans shades with your guidance. Now I want to tackle this project. Excellent explanation I've ever seen. Thank you so much
I did not read through all 187 comments but I felt this might save some time. Most quality staplers like the Swingline you used have an anvil with two settings. The normal setting that folds the legs in and if you push up from the bottom and turn the anvil around it will bend the legs out; this in effect makes the staple a straight pin that can easily be pulled out.
the thing I like most about this channel is if you notice when cutting the EMT they tell you that they sell something but also tell you that the stuff from the home improvement store is half as much. it's that kind of honesty that makes me keep going back to SailRite

I just finished constructing this exact canopy in my backyard to the specifications shown in the video. The end product looks very professional and is made with high quality materials. The procedure in the video was accurate too. That said, the project was not as easy as the video makes it out to be. I consider myself a pretty handy person (I built the wood pergola on which the canopy is mounted, for example) and I found this project to be tedious, time consuming, and difficult. I am very very happy with the end result and I highly recommend it to others. But please go into this realizing that it will be many hours of frustrating hard work.

I have to say, this is very clever. We are in the process of erecting a pergola and this explains in great detail exactly how to build the necessary sail. I love the way you make mistakes, these would be easy to edit out of the video but where’s the fun in that? Not being US-based I can’t really use Sail-rite but I’ll certainly be using the methods!
Thank you for your wonderful video. I found this a year ago while researching retractable diy awnings for a greenhouse project. Now that the greenhouse is ready, I could not find how to set up the pulley system! Your video was excellent and gave me what I needed to know. Thank you again!

When I bought my Salerite LSZ1 sewing machine a few weeks ago I bought it just to make a motorcycle seat and some miscellaneous things for that. I had no idea I could do all this stuff. Now I have a list of things to do with this machine (which is an outstanding workhorse by the way); The Pergola shades, awnings for the home, covers for grills etc. What a great machine and such great tutorials!!!
This is an outstanding tutorial. Maybe one of the best I have seen. I feel like I just finished a trade seminar for Sailrite. I was searching to make a retractable awning to extend away from the beam that supports the balcony of my first floor apartment that will give some shade when the sun is setting in the west, not for a permanent structure like the pergola. This will work for my application with a removable bulkhead on the end away from the patio, so long as it would support the wire rope tension. With the water repellent nature of that material, it would provide a substantial cover when I have to grill in a light rain. I may take it a step further and use a tubing bender to form a gable or mild arch. Even if it only had a 2-12 or 3-12 pitch, it would increase water shedding immensely. With a bend in the thin wall conduit in the middle of the span, and a slight bend just up from each end; it would make a great retractable patio cover. As long as the wire ropes were positioned uniformly at the proper height, commensurate with their position on the arch; it would work exactly the same way. Of course some scaling of fixtures and fasteners may be necessary. I want something wider though. If it does not come in wider widths, any secrets on joining panels edge to edge? I’m sure an overlap is necessary, but a certain stitching pattern may be proven best. Again, great job! P.S. Ship one of those sewing machines to me for the project and I’ll make a video, then ship the machine back. I do a lot of leatherwork. I wonder how one of those machines would stitch a belt? Would it work on multiple layers of 8-9 oz. leather for the welt of a knife sheath? All I do now is a saddle stitch by hand after beating the holes through with a pricking iron.
I loved watching this informative video. I've always wanted this type of shade. After watching your complete instruction video, I now know how to do it myself. It is a lot of steps, but Eric Grant's personality along with his family's assistance; kept my attention from start to finish. Thank you so very much for all your work and effort put into this project.
you could always just lower your eye bolts on one side to let the water flow out :) very slight incline like 1-2% is all you need, you will also be hiding the previous eye bolt holes with the eye bolt going lower but this will increase your slope a lot more but predrill and space away from previous hole so you dont split your wood :) thank you for this walkthrough, love it and plan on buying and making something like this for our new deck thats directly in the blistering sun...composite decking gets HOT
I am so thrilled to have found your video. We've been contemplating on getting a retractable shade cover for our pergola for a while now but the prices I got from some of the online vendors seemed outrageous and the DIY options a little intimidating, especially because I couldn't find good info on the materials I would need. Your online calculator and your detailed instructions make it look straightforward and achievable. I just placed my order and am looking forward to starting this project. Thank you for all these resources!
I used to work in machining and welding and my high school instructor probably gave me the best advice. All my tool were covered in feminine artwork daisies princesses etc. as a result no wanted to borrow my tools and they were brightly colored and easy to find when borrowed or mislaid

Wonderful video. I don't want to do this exact project but the information and materials certainly do apply to what I have on my mind. Very useful and very well done. Thank you.
Thank you so much for posting this video! Pretty nifty calculator, too! I've been struggling for years on how to keep the sun from beating down in my glass sunroom and making it so hot. These canopies are perfect! Your home and family are beautiful.
I've got a feeling that over half of these comments come from employees, friends and family! Too many use the same phrases and praises!! Still......a great looking product!!
This has been a fantastic instruction! I've only got 1 of my 4 panels done so far but its great! I'm more of woodworking/metalworking guy, but this has been easy enough to follow that I haven't screwed up any sewing yet, not to mention it looks great.
Hello Mr. Grant, Thank you so much for your tutorial. This makes the second time I've scoured TH-cam to find a how to... and the second time you knew just what I was looking for! The first thing didn't work out, I was hoing to try to replace the fabric on our patio chairs but it turned out the chair frames were not in good enough shape to salvage. Now we just bought a pergola yesterday & I was trying to describe what I would like for shade to my husband and he said "Well you just get together with Nasa and design something & I'll work on building it" I thought i can't be the only one that wants more shade than the pergola provides! You knew just what I needed before I even needed it! You are amazing, you has to have been a boyscout right? Anyways, I have not sewn since I was in junior high but your step by step instructions make me feel like I can do this and best of all, I do not need to contact Nasa! I will let you know how it turns out. Karrie
Karrie, Wow great review. You can do it! I love my wire hung canopy system, I know you will too. Let me know if you have any questions when you start this DIY project.
10 months later I and we finally completed the project together and it looks amazing. I am sure my stitches only rise to the level of “good enough” but it is up and it works and we are so very happy with our canopy. I do not know if this will lead you to our video of our canopy but I will paste it here anyways. Thank you for the step by step instructions. m.th-cam.com/video/ZXKzalN2Oi8/w-d-xo.html

Greetings from Italy, watched the whole video thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 The level of detail you put into making your videos is a credit to you and your company, cheers! #SailRite
First I must thank you for sharing! It’s a wonderful project with very very so details and explanation are good. I think no one will have such patience to give details. I would like to see other projects too!
Excellent video very detailed. One of the best I have seen as far as detail is concerned. The only thing I’m wondering about is just general dirt and leaf clean up, how would you do that. On our motor home we have an awning and it is a chore to clean to the point we use it very little.
Thanks! Yes, cleaning an awning or canopy like this is a big pain. Each year I remove the canopy, it takes only about 20 minutes to remove the all, and clean it with a soap and bleach mixed in water. I use a soft bristle brush and scrub it and then rinse it off well. Since I sewed the canopy with a PTFE thread the bleach solution will not damage the threads, as it would if it were sewn with Polyester threads. Also the fabric is not damaged by the bleach solution. It is a pain, but cleaning it each year means it will last for several years.
I'm actually wanting to install a full canopy that covers in one piece - not multiple pieces. My reasoning is - I don't want partial sun coming through and I would like to be able to sit under the canopy in the rain.
Thanks! Yes, it can be larger. Look at this PDF for more details on that: directus.sailrite.com/assets/f0fdae72-f598-4531-9027-c7400d3215bf and directus.sailrite.com/assets/ed86e747-ae42-4b79-8f90-5c8d3b110246

You can do any project on the floor and a dining room table like you said. It's not easy on my knees though! I ordered fabric from Sailrite for our bedroom drapes and pelmet. Next time I do drapes or any other big project I'm going to build a plywood top table first. It was a little interesting cutting the selvedge off of both sides of a 100 inch length with a hot knife :-P ...and epic marking pencil, by the way.. haha
Yes, it can be set up at an angle, which has the advantage of shedding water, but the disadvantage of the weight of the fabric and hardware being pulled by gravity. I have not made one at an angle, so my guidance is limited. I have had customers make a few that way and they have reported good success. Let me know if you have more questions.
Hello. I love your tutorial.. a query . I want to do this project for a width of 3.40 with a single piece of umbrela and not two or three as in your case. Is it possible to do it with only one piece? Thank you

you could always just lower your eye bolts on one side to let the water flow out :) very slight incline like 1-2% is all you need, you will also be hiding the previous eye bolt holes with the eye bolt going lower but this will increase your slope a lot more but predrill and space away from previous hole so you dont split your wood :) thank you for this walkthrough, love it and plan on buying and making something like this for our new deck thats directly in the blistering sun...composite decking gets HOT
Excellent step by step instructions. Appreciate you.
We are so glad to help. I hope your wire hung canopy comes out great! Let us know if you have any questions along the way.
So detailed and precise and pedagogicly explained! Fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You guys have the BEST tutorials!
A great show that is not only curiosity, but also great pleasure. Thanks to you, I have properly shaded on my terrace. Thank you very much.
What a fantastic tutorial! You didn't irritate me once and you gave really great instructions! Thank you for your time and effort. Super helpful.
Nothing screams construction more than using a Disney Princess pencil for wood marking 😊 what a lovely touch lol
I used to work in machining and welding and my high school instructor probably gave me the best advice. All my tool were covered in feminine artwork daisies princesses etc. as a result no wanted to borrow my tools and they were brightly colored and easy to find when borrowed or mislaid
I am going to tell your wife on you,..You did it inside! lol Great job! it shows how much patience you have, love for what you do and very detail oriented. Wow! I am overwhelm by just watching you, I don't think I can do it! my problem is...I have no patience!!! Great tutorial!!
Very well designed and organized video. One of the comments below suggests just buying a kit...too much work. Building and making with your own hands in all part of the joy, not the drudge.
Muy buen video, a pesar de que no entender ingles, su explicación detalle por detalle, entendí lo esencial, muchas gracias por su trabajo, es muy didáctico. Mis saludos desde Argentina.
Muy Fa'cil, verdad? 😃

Highly comprehensive video. Thanks for the hard work!
Your welcome!
Excellent, comprehensive video, thank you.
One question: he mentions if we don’t want a pulley system we can use something else. Did he say some sort of webbing? Do you have a photo or video tutorial for that, please?
Many thanks. 👍
Hi Helen,
Here is a link to the instructions for the alternate webbing strap system for the wire hung canopy:
www.sailrite.com/PDF/Alternate%20Webbing%20Strap%20System%20for%20Wire%20Hung%20Canopy.pdf
Thanks for your comments! Let us know if you have any questions regarding this or any other fabric project.
What a GREAT tutorial. You are a wonderful Teacher!! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!
I have subscribed!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for subscribing!!!!
Awesome. Very detailed explanation. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind words, it means a lot!
I've got a feeling that over half of these comments come from employees, friends and family! Too many use the same phrases and praises!! Still......a great looking product!!
Me tooo
No, that is not true. None come from staff or family. That is against our policy, we only answer comments, we do not post comments on our videos EVER!
This has been a fantastic instruction! I've only got 1 of my 4 panels done so far but its great! I'm more of woodworking/metalworking guy, but this has been easy enough to follow that I haven't screwed up any sewing yet, not to mention it looks great.
Your video is the best I have ever seen. Great instructor. I need to build exactly one like your asap. Thank you so much for your video.
Your welcome! Let us know if you have any questions.
Отличный навес 👍Благодарю за рекомендации.
Hello Mr. Grant,
Thank you so much for your tutorial.
Great video with lots of instruction and great onformation
Awesome fitting finishing and a very detailed video thank you for such a detailed and informative video I appreciate the effort and patients taken for making this video ...
Followed your excellent instructions and made two fabulous retracting shades. The downloadable calculator helped. Going to add the pulley system too. Thank you!
Excellent explainer! probably the best I've seen.
Thanks!!!
Really Awesome 👍 Love from India ❤️
I am going to build a pergola and it is ongoing to be a long and narrow, and it’s a weird size. I was thinking, what am I going to do? Thanks to your excellent tutorial I know how to figure this out and do it myself. THANK YOU!!
This is such an awesome video! Thanks for teaching how to do this!!
Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate your support.
Excellent video! 1st. Send my wife shopping. Now I'll enlist the help of my 7 year old granddaughter to watch the video and be able to give me instructions. Hoo-yah!
Greetings from Italy, watched the whole video thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 The level of detail you put into making your videos is a credit to you and your company, cheers! #SailRite
Awesome! Thank you!
First I must thank you for sharing! It’s a wonderful project with very very so details and explanation are good. I think no one will have such patience to give details. I would like to see other projects too!
Amazing instructional video!
wanted to setup a canopy for my roof garden and this one is too perfect. 👍
Excellent DIY video! You are an excellent instructor...
Fantastic video. It made the process very easy to follow along. Thank you
what an incredibly helpful video, thank you!
Those cabinets are beauties!
I'm actually wanting to install a full canopy that covers in one piece - not multiple pieces. My reasoning is - I don't want partial sun coming through and I would like to be able to sit under the canopy in the rain.
I think without the gap you end up with a giant flapping sheet in the wind. If you want a giant mono shade you need to have it under tension
Thanks for this tutorial Eric!, may Jesus bless and prosper your business!
Jesus died of tetanus because nails were rusty
Great instructions! Very clear and easy to follow. Is it possible to do this process to make one larger canopy?
Thanks! Yes, it can be larger. Look at this PDF for more details on that: directus.sailrite.com/assets/f0fdae72-f598-4531-9027-c7400d3215bf

You can do any project on the floor and a dining room table like you said. It's not easy on my knees though! I ordered fabric from Sailrite for our bedroom drapes and pelmet. Next time I do drapes or any other big project I'm going to build a plywood top table first. It was a little interesting cutting the selvedge off of both sides of a 100 inch length with a hot knife :-P
...and epic marking pencil, by the way.. haha
I love the Canopy, for water drainage, could you not offset the cabling so the panels are higher on one side than the other?
Yes, it can be set up at an angle, which has the advantage of shedding water, but the disadvantage of the weight of the fabric and hardware being pulled by gravity. I have not made one at an angle, so my guidance is limited. I have had customers make a few that way and they have reported good success. Let me know if you have more questions.
This instructional video is excellent!
Very good video, great instructions, thank you
Great project. Thanks for posting such accurate and succinct supplies list.
Your welcome! Thanks!!!
Fantastic video and explanation. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
A great walk-through. Any chance some diagram of the pulley system is published somewhere to better understand the operation of it as a whole?
Hi Yaro,
You can find a diagram here.

I love the princess pencil that the boys are using. Great DIY project. I plan on doing this.
Awesome, let us know if you have any questions when your project is started. Eric
Hello. I love your tutorial.. a query . I want to do this project for a width of 3.40 with a single piece of umbrela and not two or three as in your case. Is it possible to do it with only one piece? Thank you
It's 2:38am and i love what I've watched.
God bless your family
Thank you so much! Wishing blessings for you and your family as well!
Excellent tutorial! 5 stars!
Great video! Great Simple system which requires some focus and attention to build but it is very doable.
Thanks for your positive comments.
This is a most detailed tutorial. Thanks for all your hard work!!
You are welcome! We love the results of this project.
After watching this video, fixing my wife's refrigerator, Furnace and dishwasher, all from TH-cam - I am confident I am ready to tackle open heart surgery next.
